I think the point you missed was that the old film stereoscopic cameras from the last century were around before computers were invented so you couldn't view them by 'wiggling them'. The way they worked was that they had two adjacent lenses built in to the camera's body, one taking an image from the perspective of your left eye and one from the right. You sent off the film to be developed and it came back with the images in slide form mounted next to each other on a small piece of cardboard. When placed in a viewer, your brain superimposed the 2 slightly different images giving a cool 3-D image. We used to own one of these cameras in the 1970s and it gave very good sharp images that were fun to look at for the 3D effect.

Amazing! I've been hoping someone would bring stereographic lenses to digital. I own one that has 2 but 3 would be so awesome. Bummer that the lens run is so small and it's been a few months since the first run. Hopefully George can do another batch because I would order this in a heartbeat.

This may be the first 3D lens for a full frame mirrorless camera - however, Panasonic released a 3D lens about 10 years ago for the M4/3 Lumix and Olympus cameras. It was a dual lens 12.5mm IIRC. It is however very cool to see this new 3D-printed lens in action. I thought the results from the Pentax and the 4-lens models was equally impressive and achieved at least as cool of a look. Thanks for sharing you findings Mathieu!

Panasonic had (still has technically) a two lens stereoscope lens for the micro four thirds mount. Also Fuji sold a few of the 3D points and shoot cameras as well.

There was a way to get this effect on a digital camera before. The Fujifilm W1 and W3 3d cameras. And possibly the LG 3d camera phones.

Panasonic released stereoscopic lens for digital cameras (m43 format) around 10 years ago, so this idea is not a new thing. I guess the problem is that it's such a niche product with lots of drawbacks (like very narrow aperture, problematic to create wide angle) that it's not really appealing to photographers thus not many alternatives appeared on the market.

I was wondering that as well, and you can just pause the video. It loses the 3D effect unfortunately. I'd assume video would look horrific!

Loreo has been making stereo lenses for digital cameras for a while now. So this is not exactly the "first". Still pretty cool though, especially the homemade aspect.

Please try to incorporate it in video! I mean shot 30fps and interweave a "wiggle frame" in between each frame so it turns to 60fps for example. Could be cool, could be weird.

If more lenses are added, you could print these out and put them behind a lenticular sheet, so you can make your own 3D patterns to hold in real-life.

This is awesome! I taught myself how to take stereo photos with a DSLR by hand, by shifting the camera side to side, and have been pretty successful with two-image stereo photos that you can see by crossing your eyes or putting it in a stereoscope. I also taught myself how to take multiple frames of a still life by moving the camera on a tripod and then use Photoshop to make them wiggle. I dream of someday having a camera or lens like this can take all the frames at once 😍

This is really cool! But even cooler is the unexpected 'Shepard Tone' style illusion you've achieved in some of these shots: the image appears to be in a state of perpetual zoom despite being only 3 images.

Reminded me of 16 x lenses Fujifilm camera for golf - Rensha Camera Ryu N16, still possible to buy today in Japan, and some Japanese vintage photographer's still love using it. It takes 16 shots one by one, on 16 lenses, exposing 16 images on 2x 35mm frames film. Quite a strange beast from the past.

I find this about as interesting as being able to turn persons portrait into a cats head. It’s a gimmick, it’s wigglingly annoying, and nobody will care in 18months. Clever maybe, interesting no. It doesn’t go three dimensional without the annoying flickering motion. Sorry !

actually proper 3d picture viewers are damn cool, but extremely rare :( but wiggle pics do give a 3d effect on 2d devices, so thats cool.... also a surprising amount of early photography was 3d.

It's a great idea but as a 3D printer maker I can't stand this print quality, I'd be embarrassed to offer something so poorly printed for sale for $8, let alone $80.00!!!

It's cool, though I kinda prefer anaglyph to wiggle. For a still image that is I've encountered a website long time ago that has a calculator to make a disk with 2 apertures - this is to take 2 images on same camera, same sensor. The disk is to be placed on the lens of course. However, my trials with it were poor (I used black hard paper to easy handling but maybe a metallic one would be better).

Also, I have one of those Nishika 4 lens cameras, and have been experimenting with 3d for years. A dual lens setup is better for live subjects, but you get nicer architectural and still life results with multiple shots on a modded macro slider, and you can get goofy lenticular stuff using marked camera rails.

I don't believe that is the first lens. Panasonic made a 3D lens for M43 the 12.5 f12 3D. I have it I never used it once. It has two lens. You can find them on Ebay. Maybe the Panasonic 12.5 can be adapter to do kind of photography? I know filmmakers would put tape on one of the contacts so it would trick the lens to film video. Panasonic just wanted people to use it for stills. A hacked GH1 or GH2 you don't need to use tape.

For anyone that doesn’t want to be excluded because of expensive parts, you can get the same effect by moving the camera to the side around the subject on burst mode and have pretty much an infinite amount of frames.

Not really, with this lens your taking a photo in the same millisecond from 3 different angles, with burst you would have motion, since every picture is taken slightly later than the previous.

Why not take a video with high shutter speed to avoid motion blur and grab 3 suitable frames to create said effect? I can see that having a use to produce stereoscopic depth on a single film but today it is more trouble than it need to be.

Why on earth do we need the wiggle effect? I am even more surprised that it is announced by some people as a way to see 3D. Yes, it is possible to see 3D in these pictures, but it is much more difficult as watching the normal 3D image. The stereocard for instance, you can watch with the (trained) naked eye, or use a stereoscope. These wiggling pictures you have to watch with both eyes blinding sequential with the same frequency the picture swaps on your screen, and this should be done left - right on the right moment as well, otherwise you’ll get a reversed 3D image. VERY difficult. It also will give many people a headache. The mass is complaining getting a headache watching a 3D movie with specs comfortable placed on their nose, but wiggling pictures and their hand waving in front of their eyes is a great invention? Without a hand waving I would even get a headache. Weird? Yes, indeed!

I wonder if you could make something like this with micro lens arrays. So instead of taking just 2-4 different images, it would hundreds of different ones that are super close to each other. I'm guessing you cold get a much smoother "wiggle" that way.

You missed a chunk of the history of stereographic cameras. Lomography made an assortment of these cameras back in the late nineties early aughts. Including the Actionsampler (4 lenses) and Oktomat (8 que lenses). But also had a couple stereographic cameras situated in vertical and horizontal and another with three with different tints, etc. Now they only produce the Actionsampler.

Too bad he can’t get 3 lenses to work with crop sensors. When there’s only 2 lenses the effect is not as pleasing to look at. I wonder what would happen if you put the full frame version of this lens on a speed booster and then on a aps-c camera.

Not on Digital Camera, but I think their are several apps on iPhone you can have the same effect, with no lens needed.. Film 3D and Parallax....

If you want to test it without having to spend money right away, simply take two pictures with the same exposure values with the camera offset by a few centimeters. Then align the images with the image editing software of your choice. The disadvantage is that this method only works with static subjects. In my film days, I used to do this with slide film and "3D glasses" that I made myself from two cheap slide viewers.

You didn't get what is 3D image. It's not that effect - that effect is something that can be done now. 3D image is like 3D movies at the cinema.. If you use stereoscopic viewing apparatus it should be one 3D image.

These results don’t seem good enough to bother with this lens. You could get a much more pleasing result by shooting a video, panning the camera, selecting 3 or more frames and stitching them together. Still a fun video to watch.

Do Samsung Galaxy phones with 3 cameras have any app that can create similar type of gifs? Looking at the physics of the three lenses placed in a row, I can not avoid thinking that this can easily be done in an app on a phone with similar 3 camera arrangement.

The wiggle grams are neat to a degree, but its kind of wagging the dog by the tail. The stereograms are meant to give 3D effects..and at this point are best viewed as stereographic 3D image in a VR headset.

I hate to say it but you don't need a special lens. I have seen it done with after effects on copycat Friday using video. They said that's how the music video was made.
