Dig. Teleport. Soft-Boiled? Sweet Scent. Headbutt. Milk Drink?? CHATTER?!? Field moves are special moves in the older Pokémon games that help liven up the adventure a little. In this video we'll go over the field moves in the series that weren't HMs at some point and what they added to the adventure and why I liked them.

I miss field moves. I really liked the idea that your Pokemon could do more to help with your journey than just battle.
@Robbie_Haruna
@Robbie_Haruna 4 месяца назад
It was a neat idea in theory, but the fact that you had to waste precious move slots on moves that are, with few exceptions, extremely weak is was pretty bad design and HM's were honestly obnoxious. Field moves that aren't HMs are fine enough though.
@TheEmeraldWeirdo
@TheEmeraldWeirdo 4 месяца назад
@@Robbie_Haruna Yeah, a lot of people felt the same way. And instead of trying to find an actual solution-- like, say, buffing the moves so they'd be worth using up a move slot-- Game Freak just got rid of them. They swept the problem under the rug instead of fixing it. Besides, I've NEVER needed all four of my Pokemon's move slots to make it through the game. In my opinion, anyone who thinks you do either sucks at the game or is WAY too obsessed with efficiency.
@Robbie_Haruna
@Robbie_Haruna 4 месяца назад
@TheEmeraldWeirdo It's not a matter of difficulty. It's a matter of an already limiting system (four move slots,) being limited even farther because HM's are bad, and unless you're playing Gen 5, they're constantly needed to progress in dungeons. They can't just "buff," the moves simply because shit like Cut and Rock Smash would become early game nukes if they were made to be actually good. Dive and Fly are fundamentally flawed (though Fly is at least servicable in the main game,) Strength is only kind of decent (and rendered obsolete by many other Normal Type moves, and Surf and Waterfall are just all around good. In general, even if the moves were all made "good," there's a fundamental problem with the type overlap on these that actively would get in the way of smart team building. Most games have two or three water type HMs, 2 or 3 normal type ones is normal, one fighting and one flying. The variety just isn't there enough to make these work well by eating up a sizable chunk of move slots(still not sure how Rock Climb was a normal type move). If GameFreak was smart, they would just allow the usage of the moves on the field once you have the HM and the necessary Gym badge so long as something on your team can learn it, without actually needing to teach the move, the HM system was badly designed, but there were other alternatives than just dropping it entirely.
@TheEmeraldWeirdo
@TheEmeraldWeirdo 4 месяца назад
@@Robbie_Haruna Buffing them COULD work without making them overpowered, you just need to change the usual order of obtaining them. For instance, making Flash--a non-damaging move--the first HM instead of Cut or Rock Smash would allow you to make them stronger without handing the player a broken move. My personal ideas are to boost Rock Smash's power to 60 and reduce the chance of a Defense drop, and turning Cut into a 70 power Steel-type move with a high crit rate. So if the order of the first three HMs is Flash->Rock Smash->Cut, that would be a more or less balanced progression. And I agree that Rock Climb being a Normal-type move is weird. It should really be a Rock-type move. And the current movepool system would lend itself very well to bringing back field moves. They could make it so that a Pokemon can use a learned field move outside of battle even if it's not in their current moveset.
@GratefulforFreePress
@GratefulforFreePress 3 месяца назад
I think a "Field Move slot" would have fixed MOST of the problems with field moves. Like a move slot designated solely for learning field moves, a slot you don't get access to during battles. You could still put Field moves in your Regular, battle moves slots if you wanted too, but if you also had the option of a field move only slot, that would be great.
@meichelr

one of my favorite little weird things about XY is that specific moves can knock items down from trees on routes or stalagmites/stalagtites in caves. like those berry trees on routes with the berries that are too high up to reach, are actually in the background of battles and can be knocked down with air cutter or twister

Gen 1's choice of TM's is absurd when you look at some of them. You mentioned Softboiled being only learned by Chansey and Mew but Egg Bomb is the same with Exeggcute and Exeggutor added in. I could only be thankful that this method of TM choices is no longer in place or else we'd have our reusable Judgement TM for Arceus.

I really dont mind HMs being gone, like at all. Yeah, it's imersive and in concept is neat, but fill your pokemon moveset with (normaly) underwhelming moves or caring one or even two pokemon JUST for passing certain areas, some of them being obligatory, was kind of an unecessary feature to have (no, move deleters does'nt make it better.) I like TM efects way more bc, it's a neat feature to be in the game, they serve their purpose well, and more important, they'r completaly optional. I would like if they expand in these with the emd of HMs insted of erase them too.

If you quickly tap a direction other than the one you are facing, you will stay on the same tile (so you will not roll the step counter), however you can encounter a pokemon as if you had walked a tile. So you dont need sweet scent. The easiest way to do this is find a grass tile in a corner and rapidly mash the direction of the two walls.

i'd like to see some aspects of HMs or field moves to return, but without them being mandatory for story progression. Or even tie the action to a type instead. small bush blocking access to a side area of the forest? a Bug pokemon could eat through it, or maybe a pokemon with a "cutting" move. a high-up object you want to reach? Flying or Psychic can help (this is actually an NPC interaction in XY). if we keep the open-world model for future games, things like these would make great points of interest that SV is currently sorely lacking. it helps people have more reason to vary their team, if only for a moment as they look through their boxes to answer the puzzle in front of them.

@Yanhime97
@Yanhime97 4 месяца назад
Funnily enough, I feel like HMs could almost come back wholesale and people wouldn't be anywhere near as bothered by them as in the older games. Purely because we can access our PC boxes while out and about, plus the more free moveset adjusting in the modern games. Like, the big problem was either having to teach your Pokemon (typically) bad moves or have an HM user or 2 handy, leaving out your party Pokemon for potentially long stretches so they can get you through. Free access to PC boxes and more freely adjustable movesets would make the biggest problem a bit of menuing every now and then.

I got a suggestion for your videos: Please experiment with turning off the speed-up mode for emulator footage used in background footage. For something like challenge-run supercuts, it's fine, as it supports fast story narration. But as a background for slower-paced narration showing supporting tables, over-world overviews, etc, I personally find it jarring and hectic, moving the viewer focus away from the content you want to display towards the slightly blurred and fast-moving background. The same style of (background) footage (i.e. running around, start surfing, the party screen with attack selection) work the same at 100% speed, without introducing that much in-your-face-blinking.

Sweet Scent can be quite useful on Gen 2, as it starts the battle immediatelly, there's no animation or anything. If you're grinding for something, it can save you a considerable time. I kept it on my Venusaur, it even made sense on a battle perspective, as it helped Sleep Powder to connect easier. At the time, I tried to make a team that included all the HMs and useful Field Moves.

Funny story about softboiled Gen 1. When I was maybe 8, that was the first time I beat the elite 4. I distinctly remember where I was (at a cultural show with my family). I was right before lance and couldn't beat him, kept losing and I was running low on money so I kept resetting (stupid me didn't realize I could just keep beating lorelai and them and get cash for more items). The big one were ethers and elixers, I had one left and I was all out of health and revives. Long story short, I pulled through against the champion after using an elixer on blastoise and he ran through the champion team with arcanine and jolteon. Super lucky. Next was the 151 pokemon journey, chansey was one of the last pokemon I needed to finish the pokedex (I hated the safari zone). Eventually, I wanted to do a safari zone elite 4 run after I got the 151 -so Taurus, scyther, chansey, etc. I was once again low on health and revives by the time I got to the champion. That's when I found out about softboil by chance because I wanted to check my pokemons pp. To my surprise, I soft softboil as an option, used it on chansey recovered health. Used the last one on my Taurus ran through the champion once again...

Part of me always hoped that these wouldve been reworked and expanded. The idea of your own party of pokemon being able to give you some utility outside of battle was always super cool IMO, and it was only really the clunky way they hindered battles (taking up an essential move slot) that was a problem. Imagine if every pokemon just had a fifth move/ability separate from their normal movepool solely dedicated to this, so that at any given time you could have up to 6 field moves without the hassle of HMs taking up move slots. Heck, imagine if a system like this was carried over into legends arceus, and when you threw out a pokemon it could perform it's field move right there and then instead of every pokemon being functionally identical on the field.

I miss having party members interact with the overworld… I feel like it would be easy to reimplement by having a seperate “skill” TM that doesn’t take up a move slot, designating a flyer, surfer, etc. Maybe a fun side quest to learn to tutor the moves would be cool. Having random taxis and stuff just feels very braindead to me and takes away the adventure. Also having multiple options like teleport being readjusted to work exactly like fly would mean you aren’t as restricted by type in team building. You could add so many more fun skills like this for your team to interact with the map in a way you enjoy? Eg, some Rock types could scale ledges and walls, Ice types could make for super fast navigation of caves, dark types could lure or bait the highest level cap pokemon in an area, there’s so many interesting ways overworld mechanics could be brought back

I'd like field moves to return, but they should be in a separated moveset. It's cool to use your team to travel through the region, but having to devote two team members to them is not practical.

It's worth noting that Dig had a partial repurpose in generation 3, being required to access to Sealed Chamber where the Regis legendary event can be triggered. It's the only time the field move's functionality changes, and it only occurs on one specific tile inside the cave.

great vid but omg your backgrounds are way too flashy. You can't have multiple video clips in the background, at the same time, and constantly cut between them, in addition to the footage having a lot of transitions and menu uses on its own

I recently replayed Red Version and had forgotten how much the older games feel more real. HMs and field moves trained your pokemon skills like youd train a horse to jump over an obstacle while riding, or an ox to move a heavy object, or even a dog to fetch. It was a way to interact with nature in the game that didn't feel magical. Storage of items and pokemon took planning and care. Resources, whether it be storage, money, or items, were finite and had to be rationed. The little difficulties you experienced made the game believable, relatable. Even with the fantastical creatures inhabiting the Kanto region, it was all down to earth enough for me to imagine I could be the one wearing the ball cap. The plot didn't move forward because of mythical creatures. You progressed because you and your team made it happen. The world was not at stake. You beat the Elite Four because you wanted to be the champion. You completeld the pokedex because you wanted to catch em all. Everything was attainable as long as you trusted your team and kept a curious mind open to adventure.
@cheetah219

It's why BD is my last pokemon game. I couldn't finish it. It was too easy, I could train my whole team at once, I can catch fully evolved pokemon immediately, etc. So much is spoon fed. I still vaguely remember coming across articuno by chance in seafoam Islands and had to restart the entire cave because I didn't save and I wasn't prepared to catch a legendary Or when my friend told me where to finally find zapdos since I didn't know you had to surf around rock tunnel to the power plant. Or spending hours trying to find a way to push the cart near ss Anne to get mew. Or being forced to either buy two copies of the game or trading with friends to get the trade evolutions and version exclusive Pokémon. When we found out Pokémon could be version exclusive, when Gen 2 came out we had a Pokémon battle to figure out who was gonna get gold and who was gonna get silver (we both wanted gold obviously). I lost but I got crystal instead since my cousin bought the game as a surprise It was all these moments that made us fall in love with the game and even 20 years later Gen 1 and 2 still have surprises!

I think Field moves are way more interesting than HMs. As optional mechanics that flesh out your pokemon and give them utility other than fighting. The problem with HMs is that they are required, which just leads to having an HM slave or forcing your other pokemon to learn moves you don't like that much
@mjm3091
@mjm3091 3 месяца назад
6:13 It is also important to mention that XY introduced a new mechanic were certain moves could destroy parts of the battle arena and give you some extra items. Not necessarily an overworld mechanic, but it kinda feels like one. 7:30 I kinda wish they brought some of those back same with ability effects... Miltank/Chansey/Gogoat only healing Challenges are fun.

As annoying as they could be, I miss HMs being mandatory because they forced you to have one member of the team who wasn't entirely combat oriented. Players wouldn't normally bother with training up a Bidoof but if they need Bibarel to be their go-to team member for cut, surf, strength & rock smash they might keep it in their party for the whole game. I like that a pokemon can still be very valuable even if combat isn't their forte.

Can you imagine the colossal game Pokémon could make if everything that eventually got scrapped during these years were reunited into aingle game with multiple regions? Even small things like that you focused on this video, I personally think, help to create a singular gameplay experience other franchises can only dream of. But nowadays everything is a gen only gimmick, and there's a new game every year because, y'know, mone's money. And everyone just buy it anyway. It's very sad to see an amzing franchise like that sink into itself like that. Also, great video! Straight to the point, amazing visuals and good writing. @remyoconnor3141 Hi - thanks for your response. Your tone seems a little pointed, which I don't understand since I didnt know what you were talking about and was asking for examples. Replacing the HMs with organic progression systems was a good change, but I miss the ability to use other field moves outside of battle. The field move functionality could be expanded, too - imagine if you could control an area's weather with Rain Dance as a field move to encounter different Pokemon.
