The Weird History of the NASCAR Overtime

In 2004, a race between Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr would end prematurely thanks to a teammate spinning out, and multiple circumstances prior to the Spring Talladega Race. The result would cause the race to end under caution and upset the entire fanbase in Talladega. NASCAR decided to come up with a rule change to help lower the chances of a race ending under yellow thanks to the new Overtime Rule. What NASCAR didn't realize at the time, was that this change would lead to a near 20 year rabbit hole that no one saw coming. Today, we go around in circles discussing the weird history of the NASCAR Overtime.

Only one OT attempt is necessary. -If there's a late-race caution, it takes the pressure off safety personnel to make sure the track is ready for a restart. -Limits carnage. -Keeps the race from bleeding over their airtime. As SpiderMan would say, "Everybody gets one."

Motorsports is a very dangerous sport, so to put drivers in a position to potentially get seriously hurt or even get killed just to finish the race under green to please the fans is irresponsible. Ryan Newman could have died in the 2020 Daytona 500 because of overtime, and now, he's out of the sport and hasn't been the same ever since. Plus, ending a race under caution isn't a bad thing, and not everything has to be exciting. Not every football game is a deadheat. Neither is NASCAR, but the Frances may disagree. Plus, overtime doesn't add excitement to me.

I sometimes wonder what if one of the other cars that finished top 5 that day (Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, or Robby Gordon) had been in the lead when that last caution flew Had an RCR car ended up winning or Jimmie when he had yet to win a title…… is that viewed any differently by the fans in the stands?

I’m glad someone finally made a video on this. I pulled the data after Nashville being curious and crazy to find that 1 in 5 races since 2004 have it, and that when overtime occurs the winner from advertised distance changes 37 percent of time. Also Jimmie Johnson statistically is the best OT driver of all time

I’m an overtime supporter personally but I will say it’s been a little overkill this year. Michigan this year is a prime example of an unnecessary occurrence of one. I was at Indy for the whole debacle with Preece’s spin. I wasn’t mad about the ending and seemingly not many people there were, but I think Larson winning probably helped.

I think they should bring back the overtime line, BUT, make it so the LAST car on track has to cross it, not the first. Then put it at the exit of turn 2 (or maybe the backstretech for short tracks), so that the track is totally clear for the leaders to slow down after the finish. Doing this with infinite overtimes (or a high limit like 5) will keep the finishes untainted by super late in the lap cautions while keeping everyone safe. There is no reason a crash out of turn 4 at Daytona on the last lap should lead to a caution before the leaders reach the line. Of course, this does lead to the same caution manipulation scenarios as before, but making the cautions more objective is a separate beast of an issue Nascar has.

Nascar fans are spoiled, they hated 1 attempt, hated 3 attempts, hated the overtime line, and this unlimited attempts

It always felt like unlimited attempts were inevitable. I wish they would've just done that to begin with. Also love the Mcjuggernuggets references

I think NASCAR should allow unlimited restarts with 3 laps to finish because there would be several chances for winners and many battles in the decisions to finish the races. Regarding the yellow flag on the last lap, the only thing I say is to improve and restart the race. If something happens on the track, a yellow flag is issued, announcing that there will be a restart. The grid organizes itself and restarts unlimitedly until the race actually ends. Will it take long? IT WILL, but only in this way so that the drivers can resolve themselves and actually finish the race so that it does not end in controversy and at the same time the track and NASCAR officialdom team do not have problems with the unlimited restarts of 3 laps and on the last lap as well, because throughout the history of the sport there have been several moments when they failed and did not throw the flags at the right time. I say this because it is real and it applies to all NASCAR series.

I'm mixed on overtime it could be really good but my problem isn't overtime it's how it's officiated NASCAR is not consistent with overtime rules like what we saw at Indianapolis Preece should have been a caution the car was not going to get back rolling but they waited till the White Flag to throw it if they could officiate it better than I would love overtime Also it shouldn't be unlimited it should only be one overtime if the drivers can't finish under Green in 1 overtime then they don't deserve to do it multiple times but hay that's just my opinion.

Overtime has become so common lately that I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Nascar makes it an actual rule to throw a random caution within 10 or 5 laps to go to guarantee a GWC, because that just sounds like something that they would do unironically. (Please don’t bring this into existence, I swear to God)

No need to do it, like a fifth of the field are so low quality in skill and respect that they'll make something happen almost like clockwork.

Red flag the race for any caution under 5 to go. Race back to the line if it’s safe. Tick down at least a lap for every restart. Problem solved

Personally, I disagree with overtimes being the best way to determine a winner. There’s a reason no other racing series does something like this, it results in more accidents. Bunching up the field again, especially at superspeedways, will only breed more cautions, and eventually you get the races of attrition. Yes attrition already happens (Coke Zero 400’s best cars were all wrecked out during normal racing) but finishing at scheduled distance saves cars and money.
