Excellent! My only disappointment was that you didn’t provide a solution to the Raisin Bran “problem”. How about this? Each time you jostle the box, you’re sending more crumbs to the bottom. So why not have the opening at the bottom? That way you’re removing a portion of the crumbs with each serving rather than saving them all for the final serving.

When laying gravel walkways there is a big vibrating machine that sends all the big rocks to the top and smaller ones to the bottom. Smaller pebbles and clay make for a good foundation and the larger pebbles and rocks are more resilient to erosion. The machine is called a Vibrator Plate Compactor. I didn’t know how they worked until watching this video. Great stuff!

Actually, the cement mixer should have properly mixed the aggregate (various rocks) in the concrete (portland cement). The Viabrator Plate Compactor actually takes air voids out of the concrete. Compacted clay, then small rocks act as the foundation before concrete is poured for say a sidewalk or driveway. For bridge building, steel plates and rebar act as the foundation.

I work at a movie theater, and this is actually what i use on a daily basis. See, when you make popcorn, not all the kernels will pop. When you dump the popcorn out of the kettle into the rest of the popcorn, all you have to do is use the popcorn scoop to move it all around and mix it as best as you can. All of the unpopped kernels and hard bits of popcorn will fall to the bottom, and go through a grate into a collection bin. All the best fluffy popcorn will rise to the top, making it much easier to get a perfect bucket. This is partially why "movie theater" popcorn is better than the stuff you make at home, even though its pretty much the same exact stuff.

Great video, but it's too bad you didn't mention that it's dependent on the shape of the container-for example, in a rectangular box or a cylinder, favours the brazil-nut effect, while a cone-shaped one will actually lead to a _reverse_ brazil-nut effect!

The cereal crumbs are the best part, especially of very sugary cereals! I will not be able to get a video of it because it is at my work, but I recognize this effect very well. When I mix frozen fruit to make smoothies, the blueberries and broken up raspberries fall through to the bottom of the cup while large peach slices stay near the top.

Bottom of the bag cereal is the best. More surface area for the milk to soak up flavors and more surface area covered by your tongue.

Ok so in the break room at my place of work there is a jar of sugar. In this jar of sugar are granules of instant coffee that no matter how much I shake seem to always be evenly distributed throughout the sugar, WHY? These coffee granules are the bane of my existence. Please help.

Hey, thx for your videos, they're awesome. I'm a relatively new fan, so I'm still catching up (wow you looked weird in 2013;) ) I would like to know if you can fall all the way through the earth, if you dug a hole long enough? I mean, except for the part about a core at 5000 degrees and so on, im thinking about the gravity side of things... hope you understand my poorly phrased question... thx a lot!:D

I see this effect all the time when I smash up graham crackers or candy canes. I show my family but they don't seem as interested. My hypothesis was that the large granules went to the top because the small ones fell through the cracks.

I know this video is old and you probably won't see this comment, but... How would you go about preventing this from happening? Simply remove as much motion as possible? Here's our dilemma. Own many plants. Wanted to improve quality of life for plants. Used to use soil mixes. Started making mixes from scratch. Include things like peat moss, organic fertilizers, but also things to keep soil aerated like bark, charcoal, perlite. Now, all peat and such is compacted in bottom and all bark ect. on top. I absolutely love this channel and when this started happening to our plants, I was like "I know what's happening. I saw a Be Smart video years ago about this! 😅" Thanks Joe and Team!
