I loved Lalaloopsy as a kid, I remember my friends would always be creeped out by them because it would always remind them of the movie Coraline even though they have 0 relation lol, anyways loved this video.
i remember a little girl at my school had marina and everyone was freaked out by the doll but i was SO DAMN intrigued. after that i also started collecting them. i dont think i would like em as much if they werent a bit creepy.
SAME. When I told the people in my school I love Lalaloopsy and showed some of the dolls some people said it creeped them out and/or reminded them of Coraline 💀
I never saw that I mean Coraline tried to make feel uneasy and scared lalaloopsy is trying to be cute and enterianing the bright colours and characters personalities sell that
I loved Lalaloopsy as a little kid! When I was 5, I made them fight my monster high dolls. I used to play CSI with my dolls and Lalaloopsies usually were suspects. I was a weird kid.
I’m so glad you guys covered this, I grew up watching a bunch of Lalaloopsy movies. I have adhd and I’ve been super hyperfocused on Lalaloopsy for the last few months! I’ve been collected the dolls and I have 22(I think) so far. Jewel is my favorite character and I actually had a crush on her as a kid lol.
Yuki can mean “snow,” “happiness,” or “snow flower.” Yuki is a beautiful name to give baby born in winter, or as a reminder of the happiness they have brought to your life. So it is a name, not just a word.
Of course! Yuki is a very pretty name! We didn't show it in the video, but on Yuki's wiki it states "her name is specifically based on the Japanese word for snow." Which is why we were stressing how stereotypical her name is.
If you think about it, each doll could be stereotypical to the specific thing they “represent”. It’s just dolls meant for playtime fun. And I’m pretty sure the creator never meant to be offensive towards anybody’s culture.
Hey! I live in Hawaii, had Mango Tiki Wiki and Feather tell-a-tale. I really didn't mind about the cultural appropriation as I was 10. My friends thought it was cool Mango had brown skin!
Lemme just point out a few things, sorry if you already knew: MGA is CRAZY prone to whitewashing. Case in point, Lalaloopsy Girls. Thankfully, they didn't get their hands on Dot, but they whitewashed Pix E, Mittens, Spot, and cameo only Blossom, all of which are supposed to be tan skinned. Strangely enough, they didn't whitewash cameo only April AND 3 out of the 4 i mentioned had their OG skin color on their dolls AND they even slapped Pix E's freckles on her Girls doll. Blossom never got a Girls doll. But then there's Cinder who got whitewashed when her large doll was released AND in her Crazy Hair doll. On the topic of controversial Lalaloopsies, there's also Sahara Mirage and her little sister Pita, who are meant to be Arabian I kind of agree with the sharp edge mouths they had in We're Lalaloopsy, though by a lesser mile, since what bugs me is when they're front facing and they have the tongueless open mouth which makes them look dead inside, it's even worse when they don't blink. Also We're Lalaloopsy is on Netflix if y'all wanna binge it, but if you don't have Netflix, the entirety of the show (sans episodes 2A and 2B) is on DailyMotion There are a few characters who don't have pets Mittens was controversial AF because originally, she was sewn from an Eskimo scarf, with Eskimo being a slur. They changed it to A Cozy Scarf to avoid getting vectored. The Lalas (according to the writer's bible of the nick jr show) are 7, with the Littles being 3, the Lalas are probably around 15 in Girls (they're freshmen). However we don't know how old they are in We're Lalaloopsy for some reason, they're probably adults tho
I also remember they made a doll who was supposed to be a story teller and they made her look like a stereotypical Native American. Though I’m glad that they changed Mittens’ origin from an anti-Inuit slur to a cozy scarf.
I have a collection of TONS of lalaloopsy dolls/merch. I have never noticrd "cozy mittens" in descriptions because I've been a fan since the doll line started. I have dvd media from the show saying it. I would buy merch and new dolls automatically the second they was released so I still have merch with "eskimo" since it was early products. On the dolls box, in these lalaloopsie books, lalaloopsie coloring books that say she is made from an eskimo scarf. Ive always grew up thinking it was just that till one day i read "cozy scarf" while reading a box and while watching this video i heard that too. It was like a mandela affect, everything I own says eskimo now that I've checked and thought about it but its different with later produced products sicne the controversy.
Honestly as a native american, I know Feathers isnt a good representation of any native culture, but lalaloopsy has such a special place in my heart that I actually dont hate her. I agree shes pretty offensive and definently not a good representation of any native character, but i do feel... kind of? Represented by her? In a weird way. It's probably because I grew up with lalaloopsy and am desperate for any good faith rep. I doubt MGA was purposefully trying to be offensive when creating her and the others but they... certainly didnt do great! I think if they made more native/Hawaiian/japanese/cultural dolls it couldve done some really good representation. I completely agree with what you said about Forest Evergreen. Same with darker skinned dolls! I actually thought there was way more dark skinned dolls than there actually is :(
ALSO ON YHE NOTE OF THE VIDEO GAME!!! I agree. I absolutely loved that game and played it every single day when I came home from school, but looking back on it now it is kinda eerie. As a kid I lived with 8 people so I never noticed how quiet it is lol I remember being so excited for the lala-oopsie land to come to life... that never happened 😢
Something that got me in the new webisodes is that in order to add "blush" to their face they whitewashed dot and storm e. I really liked Storm because her skin tone almost matched mine perfectly I liked that she was darker in her original debut now all of her melanin is gone.
I always thought Feather Tell-a-Tale was kind of cute, and I’m sure the creator never meant to be offensive. Maybe he meant for it to be inclusive. He included a Hawaiian and Japanese themed doll, so why not Native American? It is just a doll meant for playing. Not like it means anything. Right?
Tier list please. I remember I asked for Dot Starlight on my 10th birthday and got her. I found them charming and unique and now that I'm rebuilding my collection I regret giving her away. The names are always cookie and I remember looking at that promo posters like all the time. My favorite names were Pepper pots n pans and Berry jars n jam 🤭
Is it me or is Scraps Stitch n Sewn implied to be sewn out of dead bodies? The wiki says she's made out of scraps and a lighting bolt but it's vague enough to mean dead bodies...
I’m dead because I’m a twin and my fav was also Peanut Bigtop and my sister’s was Mittens Fluff-N-Stuff and we also dressed as clowns when we were small??? Like actually scared rn lol
Omg I had the DS Game and I loved playing as Pillows and Crumbs because their houses were the cutest 😭💕✨️ I even had their mini dolls that came with the mini furniture! Pillows came with a bedroom set and Crumbs came with a kitchen!
As a kid the only thing I wanted was to be able to enter the girls houses in the 3d game These dolls were my childhood and I'm so glad other people remember them!
Omg me and my friend bought like 4 mini lalaloopsy in past two weeks, bc we saw them in store!! Basic Storm E Sky and Jewel Sparkels plus carnival Cloud E Sky and Confetti Carnival. I’m so happy that you made a video about this doll line, to find information about them is kinda hard.😅 when we was little we watched lalaloopsy cartoons, it was fun, but we don’t remember much- and, please, make a video about Moxie girlz, it would be so cool! We talked about them literally today, i want to find mine! I have (i hope she is still in my stuff) Stamp ‘N’ Style Magic Hair Sophina! 🥰 Sorry if i spelled something wrong, English not my first language. Thank you for the video!
I just find it hilariously tragic that Lalaloopsy was released only a year after the movie coraline came out if they were released beforehand then maybe we wouldn't have so many people thinking they're creepy but that's just a theory
Bro I screeched when i saw this vid on my recommended!!! I remember having a couple alaloospies, both big and small. AND watching the lalaloopsy movies on netflix!!
I believe the reason why I lalaoopsies aren’t sewn from anything is because it’s supposed to be like a complete new realm and like a twisted version of lalaloopsy land and fun fact in the movie it is presented as a world in one of bea spells a lot books!
honestly I was and still are a huge lalaloopsy fan, its just so cute and the styles of each characters are so adorable! My favorite is jewel sparkles though because she reminds me of rarity and pink is my favorite color lol
@@TwoDream lalaloopsy babies potty surprise. they made it as a few different characters. you fed it kinetic sand and it shat it back out but shaped like buttons and hearts and stuff. cursed as hell
Heres some things that werent mentioned. Lalaloopsy also had a mermaid line, im not sure if it was a line or just one doll, most likely a line.. I only own one mermaid and she has a turqoise outfit/tail with red pigtails, the cool thing is that you can use her as a water gun. their heads are more firm and squishier so that you can dunk their head in water. WHen you drown her for long enough you can squeeze her head and water shoots out, it was so fun to use and I always baths with her. Another line was where you can design your own lalaloopsie, her doll is in the cartoon and a clip of her is seen at 35:14 and the other version 27:16. It only got brief references so I jsut wanna talk about it. She came with like 4 neon colored POSCA markers. Neon pink, neon orange, neon yellow, and neon green. What you did with her was paint any design and color her how ever you want. The line had 2 dolls, one was all white and the other was all black. I got the white one for Christmas once and since the colors are very limied you can literally buy and use any color POSCA marker. Or you can try normal markers if you want.
I never had the dolls, but I always had a soft spot for Lalaloopsy. Crumbs, Forrest, and Mittens were my favorites when watching the short-lived TV show on Nick Jr, and even if I was "too old" for the show and dolls at the time, I remember it all very fondly. If I had a character in Lalaloopsy, her name would be "Boona Spooks-to-Boot" and she would be sewn from the dress of a ghost princess. Her pet would be Tanuki with one of those headbands that you see Japanese ghosts with.
Lalaloopsy was my childhood! ❤️ Me and my 2 sisters still have all our dolls, actually. We make videos with them and all our other toys on this channel, but not so frequently anymore. Our favorites of the Original 8 were Peanut (my favorite), Bea (Our first doll), and Spot. And my top favorite doll of all was Ivory Ice Crystals. Our favorite line was probably the Littles. I remember the 3D Land game having this mermaid part I loved and would spend hours playing. You would basically go to Coral Sea Shell’s house and you could go for a swim under water. 😄
Hate the new lalaloopsy netflix series too, the writing was weird and it was bordering on terrifying. Also, you’re very right about the complexion issues. I would say Swirly Figure Eight is close to Dot’s complexion though
Personally the Lalaloopsy doll that stood out to me the most is Whispy Sugar Puff for being the ONLY Lalaloopsy Little (to my knowledge) to be released first before her older sister. And when her older sister was released, her older sister Whimsy literally has a different hair color from Whispy (therefore making Whispy having a distinction for not being a complete carbon copy of her older sister... because she was released first). And it kinda made me think of a what if scenario if Whimsy was never released because MGA forgotten to do so, and how the webisodes introducing Whispy would have to address Whispy being only Little to not having an older sister/brother (and by extension essentially an orphan).... but that would be too much of a wishful thinking and would introduce complexities beyond what Lalaloopsy would tackle and that would be why Whimsy was released a full one year later (for reference Whispy was released April 2015, Whimsy was released AUGUST 2016)!
perfect timing! years ago a got a lot of tinies that i later lost in a move. I loved them so much (and funny enough they were the perfect size for minifigures for dnd, so for a decent while me and my friends would use them during battles) and recently i tried looking them up but didn't know what line they were. I tried searching "lalaloopsie minis" but obviously that gave me the wrong line. I was struggling so much and then this video came up on my recommended! :')
Hi! Sorry im late for the rush but. I actualy owned the dolls of Mango tiki wiki and Yuki Kimono. (accounts for individual experince bellow if you wana see) And damm, I was a child and didn't speak english so I had NO ideia that the word kimono was part of her name. Same for Mango, I bought her at a garage sale so I had no ideia that was her name Account for each: Mango tiki wiki: I actualy loved mango, she was one of my few dolls that actualy had a skintone that wasent either black nor white, so I loved playing with her. I mostly had no ideia she was ment to be hawaian so I just assumed she was Brasilian (thats were im from) Yuki Kimono: I was a kid so, didnt really see a problem with her, (mostly cause I didn't knew that was her name) I remenber being obssesed with her makeup, I found it so cute at the time. Grew up with a close family friend that is from asian descent, and I don't remenber her having any issues, not saying the doll is not problematic. Conclusion: I think for kids themselves, at least from my view the resception wasent that bad. Her name sure was the main problem but when your a child you kinda just go: "Yeh, you have purple hair, your name is Violet now". But yeh, yuki was problematic. And I think mango would have worked best as a beach kinda gall instead of a stricktly hawian doll. At least as a Brasilian, Mango was by far the closest thing I got to anyone I could remotely go: Yeh that looks like the ppl I see daily. The Lalaloopsy lines def had a problem with representation, but at least they had diferent skintones instead of either going full on black or white. And when you come from a country so etinly diverced is refreshing to see that. They should have more darker toned doll tought
i remember playing that 3d game so much when i was little, but i don't fully remember it, so whenever i see screenshots or videos of gameplay i get nostalgic but also a bit creeped out its strange
I remember these dolls, but when they came out I was out of the target demographic- but they still intrigued me because of how unique they looked. Though the main thing I remember were the commercials and the music- looking back, the music was a little bit irritating. (I get they were going for whimsical) One last thing: I dreamed up a cute Lalaloopsy name: Raine Bow Connection
Not sure if this was a line or not? But I know you guys talked about the mermaid line, I had a mermaid with colour changing hair from water. I wonder if there was a hair colour changing line?
I never had any of the dolls, but I basically grew up on the webisodes and the 3D game. Pillow was always my favourite, with either Jewel or Mittens as a close second.
You keep Patches' name out of your mouths! JK, he is kinda boring. I was "too old" for lalaloopsy dolls but my sisters collected them. I was basically the researcher, keeping an eye on new dolls and media. I was obsessed with Forest Evergreen, like such a strong connection and I thought he was so pretty. (Probably gender envy, I've since realised I'm GF) I loved all the boys. My sister has started to recollect them, but we had to throw out most of the one's from childhood because we brought them into the pool and they got moldy.
You missed another line of Lalaloopsy babys i have one and its completely hard and comes with a bottle and you fill up the bottle with water and make the doll drink it and then u press the bellybutton and she starts peeing and you can change her diaper to ones that had little charms in them and the doll came with a bracelet to put the charms on, also the diapers were color changing
When I was little my brother got Minecraft and I thought it would be a good idea to put lalaloopsy land in his game but we only made jewel and mitten’s houses and it was really cute💙🩷
When I was younger I loved lalaloopsy and when I was in first grade (lalaloopsys were popular around that time) if I had a great week at school my mom would let me go to the store and pick out a new lalaloopsy
Whistle kick n score pet Ideas: Pet whistle (probably bird) Bird flag Goalie golden retriever Pompom dog (I feel like they did before tho lol) FEEL FREE TO ADD MORE!!
Also you didn't mention Tippy Tumblelina or Suzette La Sweet when talking about cultural stuff. They were actually quite big in the days of Lalaloopsy Girls, my favorite iteraton. I like how Tippy's whole thing is that she's a ballerina rather than relying on soully the fact that she's the british chick. Suzette however is *kiiiinda* awkward. Seeing her for the first time in Lalaloopsy Girls made me kinda scared that she was supposed to be a doll version of Marie Antoinette, but we don't see her character enough to make any conclusions. Also I think she's just adorable. Anyway, these two are definitely in my favorites!
I was 10 when these came out and that was around the age I first watched coreline so these dolls creeped me tf out, never got any of them because of it. Also, the rag doll in the movie was associated with a demon lady from another dimension and when these released I said "nah I don't need a doll associated with a demon lady from another world"
