Weirdly enough... I always pictured them as sisters... I know they look nothing like each other but in my mind both Gwen and Grace were adopted by Gabriella's parents and they were all made to share a room (hence the My new room series) I imagined they initially didn't get along but eventually realized they shared something in common (in my mind, their love for fashion) and started getting along, eventually becoming really good friends despite their differences.
I remember being a bit disturbed by Girls go Wheels because in the spanish translation it didn't say "Mission failed, you lost a friend", it said something like "Car crash, you lost a friend" and I thought i straight up killed someone. Don't quote me though I might be remembering it wrong. but I do remember feeling bad about it lmao
Li I love your approach to these topics. It's like a mix of scholarly empirical observant historian and obsessive online fan mixed in a perfect package lol
My dream tbh. I'm always forced to go outside. Due to work and so much more. One peaceful day inside would be a dream. Capitalism is the dream, am I right? /s
I like to imagine they're adopted sisters who are best friends, that Grace is Afro-Brazilian (she looks so much like a girl I knew as a kid who was!) and Gwen is Taiwanese, since Gwen is a popular Taiwanese name for girls (owing to its' similarities to the goddess' name Guanyin).
Looking back on it, Gwen was my Asian representation as a kid. I don’t even know if she’s actually meant to be Asian, but I resonated with the tan skin, dark hair, and dark eyes. Edit: I just got to the part of the video where you touch on that subject lol
I didn’t grow up with these girls, but I do think it was intentional. As soon as I saw the look of Gwen at 12:44, I was immediately struck with just how…Chinese it looked. Since that is 100% a hanfu. 😆 It’s a little stereotypical with the yin yang wand thingy (Daoism I guess) and the lotus-themed headwear on her two buns, but at the same time it’s…surprisingly not _too_ stereotypical. It reminds me of some of Mulan’s looks, in the way it’s a westernized interpretation of a hanfu, but it does look cute! And there are elements of it that feel accurate and would even show up in Chinese stylized hanfu designs in donghua (animated shows) today. Plus I’ll give _any_ piece of media extra points when they don’t just rely on the qipao to stereotypically and easily represent a Chinese girl (I’m looking at you, Japanese anime). Not that there’s anything wrong with a qipao, obviously, but it’s definitely become media shorthand for Chinese girl and has been stereotyped to hell and back, sometimes in a negative fashion. Hanfu doesn’t have those same connotations, so I’m impressed this game from around the early 2010s would know enough to use a hanfu design, which remains pretty unknown and underrated in the west. Anyway, didn’t mean to go off on this long of a tangent in a reply, but I saw your comment when I started the video and although I’m not at the section yet where Gwen as Asian representation is discussed, her hanfu look does easily confirm it, which is nice. ^^
@@SidVacant69 Same. I'm Native American and always picked the "Asian girl" base models or facial features in dress up games. I was so upset seeing some comments say "the half lidded eyes are too sensual" in groups for games like Poptropica or Neopets because I always picked those options since they're the closest to my eyes.
I always thought of they were best friends and Asian, black and white respectively. We had so much representation in media as kids with different races and different personalities (Gwen being Alt, grace being more sporty and Gabriella being girly). I can’t believe they white washed Grace like that in her latest design 💀 Anyways, this video takes me back. I love your videos sm they bring me back to my childhood
You fixing GGG’s whitewashing via the fillbucket tool had me giggling. I’ve been a fan of a few different franchises that had me doing the exact same thing. Lovely video as always!
It's giving Strawberry Shortcake, where the peak designs really were the early 2000s (Yk. Aside the original designs which are untouched in just about every way)
Discussing more on the GirlsGoGame murder mystery, I would really like to see if they'd touch on the secondary GGG girls (the redhead, the darker-skinned black girl, and the middle girl, who can be interpreted/done as latina) give them characterizations featuring more 2020's themed fashion styles compared to the original trio's early 2000's fashion. Maybe the shopaholic counterparts of the original girls too? Maybe like evil mean anti-individuality rich girls? Also Angel and Devil too. Always need some more love and characterization for those two as well. BoysBoBames
I like to imagine the darker-skinned black girl isn't mean or a mean girl, she's just really nice and has two mean friends who she loves so dearly she overlooks their meaner moments. She gives off such wholesome energy, I can't picture her as mean.
I love hearing the lore other people came up with for the girls. I also headcanoned them as a Totally spies/Winx-esque group of teenagers, though I did toss in some ~romantic tension~ between them because I was gay as hell. Gwen was the cool, edgy girl who was in a band and knew about niche music and had a dead dad. Grace was the leader since she most sensible out of all of them. She was kindhearted, stubborn, loved animals (i think she mightve had a talking dog bc i watched too much horseland), played soccer, and was a bit of a tomboy. Gabrielle was sensitive, sweet, loud rich girl who was preppy and kind of sheltered. She also had a pet horse (because she was rich and i really liked horseland). Gabrielle and Gwen butted head a lot, but Grace could always get them to calm down and talk things out. I'm like 99% sure there's a fanfic I wrote as a 3rd grader about Gwen and Gabrielle's repressed feelings for each other on an old hard drive somewhere. They had a whole dramatic falling out because they couldn't confess to each other and became adults when they reunited. Gwen was a famous rockstar, while Gabrielle worked at her parents fashion company, and they where super bitter to each other until they eventually got their shit together and started dating. The drama of it all LMAO
Finally, I can confess this. When I was like... god, I don't know, 7-10? and obsessed with GirlsGoGames (but not the boy dress up games, because I thought I would get in trouble if I played those because I wasn't a boy), I came across a room decorating game with these three. Naturally, I made a house that was either dog or cat focused... with them as sort of "maids" for the dogs who worked for them forever. I had no idea who they were in the slightest, nor why they were in this game. I was a little dumb. Seeing you announce this video made me remember this old, questionable memory of mine.
I'm the same too! My will to read instructions has infected me over the years lol But I remember having fun making my dream room and just checking out each interactions for cool items.
@@marissa7085 kids get that logic because parents raise them with the brain of doing things that people accept a gender do, like dolls for girls and cars for boys, obviously not all parents do this. Maybe thats why they trought they would get in trouble if their parent found they were playing a dressing boys game, or, because of seeing an animated male semi-nude
@@anonymouslucario285 this is a pretty loaded question to be asking me im ngl. you can whitewash a character without being a racist person but whitewashing is primarily done for racist reasons whether at the fault of the site's creators or at the fault of the way the world just is. whitewashing often happens in order to make things more "relatable" or "palatable" for white people. this case of whitewashing is on the less extreme end, where they made the characters a lighter skintones than they truly are. this still isnt good of course but an *extreme* example of whitewashing would be how they made a movie about the stonewall riots centered around a cis white gay man whenever the leaders of these riots were black and latina trans women. at the end of the day whitewashing isnt good regardless of what kind it is because ur erasing part of a character or entirely or in like in extreme case example, trying to rewrite history itself. TLDR: i have no clue, possibly? maybe? not at all? they could be. i dont know. whitewashing is just something that happens in the world and the only thing we can do to stop it from happening is to call it out whenever it happens, just like li did in this video.
@kaz Hi! I Don't see the comment to reply to but I just wanted to clarify some things about whitewashing as a black individual myself. (Not saying that I'm a genius/expert when it comes to it but to kinda clear things up ^^') Everything about what you said is right about whitewashing but I'm a bit confused on your first sentence when you said that "you can whitewash a character without being racist". Which is difficult because whitewashing especially when it comes to any form of media (TV shows/Movies, Games, Books, etc.) has always be inherently racist from the beginning. Alot started from the process of marketing to get people to watch/read media, it has have a racist history of erasing representation/stories from individual black/brown people. I hope I could help out with this comment! This comment was not meant to mean or anything but to correct something.
@@itsmiffymel to sum up what i want to say in the smallest way i can its basically that in a company theres lots of people who work there. the artist who made the whitewashed art might not have wanted to do that cause they recognize it as something that shouldnt be done. but they couldve had to because its their job and sometimes you cant afford to sacrifice something like that just because you disagree with it. hopefully that makes sense? of course that isnt to say that this is the case here, its just something that could be a possible scenario in life. i wouldnt want to say that everyone who whitewashes a character is racist because i just dont believe that to be true. there 100% are people who do this because they are racist and want to flaunt that for whatever reason. i do agree that whitewashing itself is an inherently racist act of course though, sorry if it ever felt like i was trying to say it wasnt, that was NOT my intention. id also like to clarify i am mixed race person myself :] hopefully this clears up what i was trying to say more, but feel free to reply to me if not! id understand if you disagree with my view on this.
The girls go wheels game feels similar to the Polly Pocket driving game where you take all your friends to a party by driving them around. Though that one could also be a copy of some other game.
GirlsGoGames was a major safe haven of my childhood. I LIVED for love-tester deluxe, the shopaholic games and some daily horoscope game with a "palm reading" which I'm forgetting the name of, and after looking I don't even think it exists on the website anymore, oh well, but it was another one of those daily login calendar based games which I just HAD to check everyday as a kid. Funnily enough, I had no idea that the girls from the shopaholic games were just redesigns of Gwen, Grace and Gabriella. That blew my mind when you mentioned that haha, great video!
My fondest memories were made on GGG, and I distinctly remember getting 99% on Love Tester Deluxe with Morgan Freeman😭that was my obsession and I miss it so bad
I always used to play the room creation game with my two sisters. We always made our dream rooms there, and we kind of assigned one of the girls to us each to symbolize. My little sister looked a lot like Gabriella, so that was her. I was Grace, because i kind of dressed like her, so my big sister was Gwen. It was a lot of fun.
I'm so happy that you covered the Lovely Mermaid games. I have a vivid memory of sitting at the family desktop one night trying to complete the first spot the difference game so I could see the full story while my parents were hosting a house party.
I imagined them to be best friends and roommates. Back then I made 3 OCs that were probably inspired by them. Gabrielle is the cute leader that loves fashion. Gwen is a chill girl that loves everything dark. And Grace is a cheerful and outgoing girl that loves sports. They were very different from each other, but still had a good time together. The similar looking Boys were their boyfriends/ love interests (even though I thought they were really ugly)
GirlsGoGames, or as I knew it in Spanish "Juegos de Chicas", is a big part of my childhood! Also about GirlsGoWheels, it reminds me of a Polly Pocket game I used to play. I really don't remember a lot about that one right now other than that it had a band game too where you could dress up a character and then have a cool themed concert... Now I want to remember more!!
aaaah me encantaban los jueguitos de polly pocket!! en el que se parece a GirlsGoWheels creo que tenías que recoger a cada uno de sus amigos para al final ir a su fiesta de cumple, eran buenísimos los juegos😭
I feel so smart for guessing grace and Gabriella’s names correctly also the issues with my new room 3 were very there when I was playing loved the girls go party game it was fun but I only liked the dress up part
I'm surprised _nobody_ thought the girls were siblings. I may be biased because I've never played on the website and on my first true meeting of them I saw photos of them as children, but they've got those vibes as well!
Probably because the different races. Ofc being mixed, stepsisters or adopted are possibilities, but the conclusion comes easier when characters look similar or have similar features
I was a daydreamer when I was young. I imagined the girls as BFFs and made up their personalities, hobbies and background stories for the three trio. Gabriella. (Soft girl) -16 years old. - Kind and smart. -Wears girly outfits. -Loves the color pink. -Uses Instagram and Facebook. (Back then Facebook was gaining popularity maybe she'll use TikTok in today's generation.) -Loves shopping. -Wears light makeup. -Sweet tooth. -Straight A student. (Except math) -Bad at cooking but trying to improve. -Fear the dark, bugs and snakes. -Has two love interests: a jock and her childhood friend. (Lmao, I watched too much love stories when I was 10 🤪) Background: When her parents got divorced, she moved in with her mother to a small town where she started a new life there. At first she was alone in her new school until she met Grace and Gwen. She still doesn't forgive her father for cheating on her mother but also does not get along with her father's girlfriend. She has her own issues and that was she has two boys fighting over her and can't decide who she want to be with. Grace. (Skater girl) -16 years old. -Outgoing and adventurous. -Prefers baggy clothes. (Street wear fashion). -Loves animals. -Takes Karate classes. -Does Yoga. -Loves sports especially swimming. -Hip-hop dancer. -Pizza girl. -Hates heavy makeup. -Rides on a skateboard. -Reads comics and manga. Background: She lives in a trailer park with her grandmother who was admitted to a hospital after a car accident. She works at a pizza restaurant part time to pay the hospital bills but also saves up to go to university. A new pizza restaurant was opened next door and a mean ginger girl (36:42) who works there tried everything to make Grace's life miserable. Gwen. (Grunge girl) -16 years old. -Loyal and cool. -Listens to rock music. -Plays musical instruments. (Her favorite is the electric guitar). -Singer. -Asexual. -wears dark makeup. -Runs a RU-vid channel. -Loves spicy food. -Watches horror/thriller movies. -Loves Halloween parties. -Have a pet turtle. Background: Raised by a single mother, Gwen lives in a wealthy background. Her mother had her when she was still in college and won a lottery when Gwen was 4. Her millionaire mother became CEO in the clothing industry and expects her daughter to take her position when she retires. However, Gwen is not interested in taking over the family's business but rather be a famous musician.
Thank you so much, we should be friends!! Please add me on any social media I want to meet you because I can relate to being a daydreamer like this as a kid so much 😂
Imo I want to think the trio are witches who are just super fascinated with fashion. They all take wildly different aesthetics with all kinds of outfits that may seem bizarre to others, but they're super cool to the girls. I think it can explain how they can turn into mermaids, and have like 3 different occupations, and tell who you're compatible with. They can use magic, your honor.
It’s so fascinating and endearing to see what stories and lore others came up with for the GGG girls when they were kids! I saw them as friends but I never thought much into their dynamic beyond that. It was fun playing the games they appeared in just to be able to interact with them though. But it was mostly because I was super into Bomb It and I loved seeing the little robots 😅
the lovely mermaid spot the difference game images gave me such an whiplash; i remember playing that thing and somehow never caughting up on the implications! Really like your old kids online media videos, it's always so interesting to see that stuff and compare to how the internet is now. Thank you for the video~
my lore for the ggg girls come from playing the coloring game as my main source of entertainment; they were childhood friends, but got separated when one of them moved out, and the other two argued and broke off the friendship. One of the two left was Gwen. Then they're teens, and accidentally find each other again, through seeing Gwen playing a concert. The one who moved out was so very happy, until she realized the other two aren't friends anymore. Eventually, everything get fixed, and they're friends again
I loved the room design games and sould play them religiously! I would always make an alternative room for Gwen, a nature/outdoorsy type room for Grace and a pink princessy type room for Gabriella. My headcanon when I was younger was that Gwen and Gabriella were twins (gotta love the standard ‘twins with completely different personalities’ trope) and that Grace was their best friend from school
The car game is a similar concept to Polly Pocket game where you drive around to pick up her friends for a party. There was also a Gumball game like this, where Nicole Watterson runs errands throughout Elmore. Unlike the Polly Pocket version, the Gumball controls are more challenging to get a hang of, as it's in the POV of Nicole's right, left, forward, n backward directions.
THE SHOPAHOLIC GAMES!!!!!! i loved them so much. they were honestly the only games i came back everyday to play (apart from stardoll, obv) love your channel!!! 💕
Was not a girls go games girly as a kid, but I did play the shopaholic games religiously on Y8. Seeing your community tab post about the poll made me so nostalgic.
Ok, fanfiction plot time: they were childhood friends, but then school happened and Gabriella found a place with the popular kids, which made Gwen, a goth kid who rejected the traps of popularity, resent her and break their friendship. For years, Grace was the only thing connecting them, until they went to college and had to share a room. Their relationship is slowly being fixed as they're forced to spend time together, with Grace as the mediator (which is why she's in the middle). With shipping glasses on, they all have crushes on each other, with Gwen and Gabriella story being a "friends to enemies to friends to lovers" plot; Gwen and Grace having a "will they, won't they" plot because Gwen keeps being angsty about Grace's friendship with Gabriella; and Grace and Gabriella have a cutesy "everyone thinks they're dating but they're obliviously pining" dynamic.
I remember playing my new room 2 in like 2013 and opening 3 different tabs at the same time just to make a room for each character and make them "interact" and go to each others rooms
The first Lovely Mermaid one is funny because it's more accurate to the original Hans Christian Anderson version of the Little Mermaid than the Disney version, except that the Mermaid was told to kill the Prince and she chooses not to do that and turns to sea foam.
I'll never again be able to see Angel and Devil as anything other than Li's interpretation of them as a volatile will-they-won't-they, and for that I'm grateful.
You, Dream Jelly, and Izzyzzz have this vibe i absolutely love. You all cover topics that don't seem interesting at first, but i quickly become interested in!
I love your outfit! your overalls are so cute! would you ever make a stardoll or elouai/roiworld korean dressup games video? for years in middle school I would play the drag and drop dress up games, some of them are still up online I believe!! the art style and the fashion in those games was top tier
i miss classic girls go games so much, their designs were wonderful and i loved this site as a kid. now the site is devoid of any personality. the game crossovers were so good, especially angel and demon showing up and the bomb it characters, i always played bomb it with my cousins
when i was a kid i just assumed they were bffs and didnt think too much about it, but yesterday i was revisiting these games from my childhood and one of my favorites was the room decorator game, but then i realized i could put gwen and gabriella lying down on the same bed and since then im shipping them. also i got out of my art block just to draw them making out (i hadn't drawn anything in years). congratulations, me.
I remember clicking on the first mermaid game and being so shocked when they showed Gabriella getting changed and clicking the back button as fast as I could in case my parents came in the room😭
This is so weird, but I can watch this video and the Sue one on loop. I just go back to these every week or two and they don't ever get boring. What did you put in these videos, they're so addictive!
Making a 40 minute video on the lore of GGG mascots is both deranged and absolutely spectacular. I enjoyed this video so much, and I can’t wait to binge watch all your videos!😭💖
Girls Go Wheels remind me a lot to a Polly Pocket game where you needed to pick Polly's friends from their houses and then go to a party or something like that
Somehow, I feel that the Thea sister girls (specifically Colette, Pamela and Violet) from the Thea Stilton book franchise could be sort of counted as derivatives- of course it just seems like they are common design tropes used in girls media, but their colour palettes and general demeanor seem to be similar to the GGG trio (even though violet could be considered more as a nerd compared to our alt fashion girl Gwen). Given the first thea stilton book was released in 2009, it falls around the same timeline!
Your approach to sponsorships/ads is so fun and engaging! I hope the corporate girlies (gn) know that they're getting the kind of work that does not make me go looking for the "peak" in a watch time as to skip the dull ad-read.
the horse creation gamr brought back memories. my sister once made me a whole printed out comic using screenshots and added speech bubbles i loved it so much and was something i never considered could be done
I played Girls Go Games and Games For Girls specifically for the room makeover games. I would spend hours creating my dream room. I even wanted to be an interior designer as a kid because of those games
i want these type of websites back so bad. login, daily room challenges, uploading your finished room for other users to see??? literally my dream giMMIE!!!!!!!!!
11:50 I remember the original game being a Polly Pocket one, but you know, the old old Polly. It was fun tô play it, and it seems that the controls of both are the same craziness lol
Aaah, I remember when I was a little girl and I used to play on this page all day! In my mind these 3 girls were just very good friends, like bratz! I loved playing everything they appeared in and I was always fascinated by that "friendship" they had. I really always understood that possibly these 3 girls did not have any specific lore, But the fact of not having much information (besides that for me at that time all their information was non-existent since my native language is Spanish, not English) It is what brought me many fun and beautiful moments, as a child I always created stories of those 3 girls playing and dressing in fashion while they had the most beautiful friendship you can imagine. They were the most beautiful moments of my childhood, thank you for collecting all this information about them :")💖
I remember that i had a beach towel with the girls and the name tag just said best friends and that was it.I bough it from the store! I never knew they had names and I miss them and the old girls go games!💕
10:55 I used to play that game religiously EVERYDAY. You unlocked new clothes as daily bonus and you could even go out with celebrities. IIRC on day 25 you had David Beckham so I played for 25 days straight!!!
Hey Li here's one for you. Covet fashion is a dress up app game that is essentially like the girls flash player dress up games but for adults and with real life brands. Might be interesting to compare the two since I played it for a while since it reminded me of all these lost flashplayer games.
11:51 That game gave me FLASHBACKS. It's a copy of a polly pocket game. It was its own website that was full of mini games similar to what you found on girls go games. I was OBSESSED with it.
IVE BEEN HOPING you would make a video on the ggg girls!!!!!!!! i was so curious about them when i was little but i couldnt find any games or anything with them aside from the shopping game!! i didnt even know they had names!!!!! edit: holy shit wadanohara bgm i completely forgot abt that game 😭😭😭
I used to spend hours playing GGG, it's so nostalgic seeing what the site looked like when I used to play it again. I'm watching lots of your videos lately and I'm curious if you know of Pixie Hollow? I never hear much about it and no one I know (other than my older sister) was even aware of it's existence 😭 we talk about how we used to play it all the time and how sad we were when the site was taken down as kids
i remember playing the avie pocket games yet i never remembered what they were called. this is the first time i've seen any mention of them on youtube, for a moment i thought they were lost forever or something
also, there was another site that used a girl trio logo, i don't remember the website but i remember their names. it was very clearly inspired by the GGG trio, their names were lilou, lea and lee. so they followed the same letter naming thing GGG had. i remember they had bio pages and blog posts. id love to see if anyone has any memory of these and if anyone remembers the website name
These kinds of channels are my absolute favorite, I'm so glad I found you yesterday through your Kissing/Flirting Games video! I've been binge-watching this channel nearly all day so I was absolutely thrilled to find a new upload in my inbox just now lol
