The weirdest knives I can find - episode 03
This folder is designed by custom knife maker Ed Van Hoy and has a very odd cam locking mechanism. The blade has a modified wharncliffe edge and a drop point. The belt clip is tip-up carry only.
Definitely a novelty collector's item, and probably quite suitable for Steampunk customization if you're into that kind of style. :)
CRKT Van Hoy Snap Lock - specifications:
Overall length (opened): 15.6 cm (6 in)
Length (closed): 10.6 cm (4 1/5 in)
Blade length: 6.4 cm (2 1/2 in)
Weight: 78 g (2 3/4 oz)
Blade material: 7CR17 stainless steel with bead blast finish
Blade hardness: HRC 55-57
Locking mechanism: Cam lock
Price range: $32-55
Where to find it:
www.hrknives.co... (U.S.)
www2.knifecente... (U.S.)
www.warriorsand... (Canada)
Pros:
- Unique, stylish design that would probably not scare non-knife folks
- Innovative and functional mechanism with very solid lockup
Cons:
- Low quality steel with poor edge retention, which makes it over-priced
- Not the most comfortable handle

Aren't the dull "dummy" knives used for demonstration usually made with un-hardened steel?
@sanjayrnaik
@sanjayrnaik 9 лет назад
Nirvalica You have guessed correctly, a dull edge dummy knife does not merit superior steel! High Speed Steel is probably the best for knife blades but Stainless Steel seems to be more widely used. The former is a bit more brittle and corrosion prone, though.
@clubsuperduty
@clubsuperduty 9 лет назад
Not with CRKT. CRKT uses the dummy knives as demos for shot show and knife shows, for safety and health reasons. I spoke with CRKT and these are the same materials as their regular snaplock. The demos are just pulled off the line before and edge is put on them. So to answer your question, NO these are not a generic metal because it's a demo. It is the EXACT same material as a regular snap lock knife sold before discontinued. I hope that helps.

I like it....I wish you'd showed us what it looks like without the clip attached....I'm thinking it would be more fun to play with, if you could spin the blade 360 degrees..... Peace n Tanks

Trying that would be very uncomfortable because the frame is so narrow towards the bottom.
@diazaman420
@diazaman420 10 лет назад
***** you need it to hold? If so I'd try to add something on both sides (just the one with the holes) to give you something to hold and find a simple way to disengage the lock all together...you could then hold the edge, and spin the blade, round n round....this would be for show, or whatever....

I have the shorter version, and I do use it for everyday carry. I've got exactly zero problem with edge retention, and for one-hand convenience, it's hard to beat. Many small knives don't give you much to grip but the cam-lock makes one-handed operation very easy.

There is a much smaller version as well... I owned 2 of them in the past (only bought one... second was one I had given to me as the blade was almost past repair). It is not a very good knife (the blade is hard to get sharp and stay sharp due to the poor steel as mentioned but also due to the blade being very thick).

Sadly CRKT very often uses sub par blade steels. For the price they could have used something just a little bit better better, like 440. I really don't get CRKT. They have very interesting designs, but they very often fuck it up with insulting blade steels. AUS4 ffs. What is wrong with them? I would have bought many more of their designs if they would stop insulting me. This one has been on my list for a long time but, 25 bucks is the most I would pay for a piece that I can't really use.

Knife-makers suffer from the same hysterical approach as in many consumer indistries, where they are constantly trying to come up with the "next big hit." If it fails to take off quickly, they seem to want to cut their losses and discontinue the item. This attitude fails to account for the way a product can attain a following long after it has been released, sometimes even attaining a cult following. Sometimes this causes them to re-release a "nostalgia edition." Perhaps a better approach would be to relax a bit and just concentrate on producing great products, building a loyal following over time.
@ShawnValsean

Yes this is a pretty much unrelated to the video but when addressing different steels, is the metal for a high quality sword supposed to be any floopy, or its is supposed to be rock solid sturdy?
@TheBaconWizard
@TheBaconWizard 10 лет назад
I really like the design.. I enjoy left-field or eccentric ideas, especially when they work well. Such a shame about the steel quality. Just make it a bit wider handle and decent metal, and I'd love it.

I got one of the snap lock van hoys back in early 2000s way before you could even google what it was for extreemly cheep. I still have it today and have sharpened it a few times so its not the orgainal full blade. It still Snaps like a high quality lighter. I dont use it anymore becouse I want it to last forever.
@Landrew0
@Landrew0 9 лет назад
I also got the dull-demo edition from a dealer, along with several other novelty-knives which he said never became popular. I didn't bother to sharpen mine because I'll never actually use it for cutting.

I own the V2 of this knife it is about half the size so the hollow handle is less of an issue, and is 5120 steel not too sure how that compares to AUS-4 of the larger other than it is rated HRC 60 still as an EDC its ok not the best ever I have had to run the edge over a steel a few times but my daily use is cutting packing tape or blister packs so it works for me plus the added giggles of tossing it to a co-worker and watching them try and open it too funny
@thomrobitaille3942
@thomrobitaille3942 3 года назад
I own one of these. It's not all that easy to open. The handle acts as a spring to lock the blade in place, a rather strong spring. I carried it for a couple of weeks but leave it in the drawer now as I have much better EDC's. However, it does attract attention. Also a very smart looking knife.
@justinshaben7837

The basic concept of the knife should be kind of an invitation for a knife maker/designer to play around with it. It always amazes me how the human mind suddenly finds a new approach how the construction of a tool or almost every item can be realised in another fashion especially when it's something so basic and old as is the knife. This one here can serve as inspiration for this principle itself. What I never will get how someone producing an item like this will deliberatly sabotage the quality of his product in the choice of inferior material. I understand cost reduction, but I reckon the cost of a better steel could be made up or better in letting be the cost of the work to make the holes along the blade or also the customer will without hesitation pay 5 bucks more and not worry about the poor steel.
@o0oNaturalOneo0o
@o0oNaturalOneo0o 10 лет назад
Actually I looked at this knife a while back and decided not to purchase it. While the lock & opening design is a great idea, the materials and the blade design basically limit its desire. I was not surprised to hear that the model was discontinued. Perhaps some time in the future a knife with the same lock and opening style can be created with a better blade shape and superior materials. I could appreciate a bayonet style with this design or a claw blade. But ty.

I have a small promotional knife that I think this could have been inspired by. The knife rotates 360 through the handle with a sleeve that rotated on the same plane as the cam here, fitting over the handle. Interesting curiosity.

Cool knife, different at least! Just a question, a really hard pressure on the part where you handle it (I don't remember the name of that part, the one that's not the blade) would broke it or even if it is basically empty inside its solid?

I've looked at this knife several times. I just couldn't justify it. The opening mechanism seems too unconventional for a solid EDC choice.
@tizben
@tizben 10 лет назад
Good thing you did not get one. I would not recommend it for EDC. The openning mechanism is oiled and you'll get all kinds of dust and lint stuck onto it. Skallagrim's version already has some grime on it (you can see it stuck on the bronze circle in the mechanism). I bought it for fun to use to open packages/cut up cardboard and I need to run it across a strop often to keep it sharp. A good utility knife probably would have suited my use better.

its not a defense knife its too weak. not a "working" knife again too weak. its more of an interesting pocket companion. useful in a pinch. and good for light duty box opening. and playing idly with ( not to any potential adopters----- it can and does cut things that get in the way of the edge your finger is not any exception to this rule. mind the edge while learning the action. you should have it down after about 3 cuts .)
