I'm a British born Chinese and the best thing to happen for me is how proud I am to be Chinese! To hear how evil China have become just make me laugh especially with the west track record. This is a very interesting way of talking about China and learning about it's history instead of the propaganda. 👍

As part of the poverty alleviation programme by China someone whom I know told me a few years ago that his Hong Kong company had been invited to invest in a factory in a poor part of a province to create jobs in Mainland China. Remote villagers were encouraged to leave their villages and exchange their "dilapidated" houses for brand new purpose built apartments in new towns. They were guaranteed a job with reasonably good pay (many times that they could earn back in their village), with training and a better future for themselves and their families. There were modern facilities of all kinds including shops, schools and hospitals. It was easier for the government to look after them now whereas before they were scattered all over the mountains and remote areas. Which government (country) in the world would do what I have just described to their citizens?

A fact that the western and US media has been trying to suppress. Instead the MSMs presented such exercises as "forced relocations" and or " cultural genocide". Guess they would prefer the American style genocides of the native tribes. Drive off the natives like cattles into uninhabitable reservations for them to die off by nature. Today the pre-Columbian native peoples of the US are no more than a threatened species, not even a tourist curiosity.

When I was a expat, I learned few things about China - they are very civilized (no comparison to ~30 school shooting this year in U.S., incomparable), hard working, skilled (able to learn), united (again vs. U.S., no comparison), and a 5000+ yrs of history. They quietly make progress while we overall either ignore them or refuse to believe what's happening there. I see changes took place in Shanghai that was unfathomable to my family, I simply told them you'll have to go there yourself. History will tell what happens next. I think everyone can learn from one another... we at 250 yrs old certainly has a thing or two to learn from a 5000 yr old. Also whenever I see a "Made in China" comment on Amazon I shake my head, 90% of Amazon is made in China is everything Iphone quality? Do you expect a $10.00 toy to last you a lifetime? When it's great quality like my Thule stroller there was no mention of made in where. Unfortunately when a $10.00 toy broke it's the Made in China joke, very sad.

Kudos to GPIC for inviting Dr. Hammond, a very insightful interview indeed. I'd like to add 2 things. China's expansion is primarily a result of being invaded by the Mongolians, North Wei and Manchurians (eastern Mongolians) who were then overthrown by the Chinese but took over the entire empire and secondarily through expansion by its own military during the Han dynasty (to drive the Huns away) and the Tang dynasty (to drive the Turks away). Second point is the U.S. had been rising since it organized itself into a nation state albeit with a few serious bumps in the road resulting in a belief in Manifest Destiny and American Exceptionalism. China was a beaten down, depressed country for that entire duration leading Americans to feel that the Chinese are inferior. In addition, the U.S. had recently won the Cold War resulting in a uni-polar world with the U.S. on top of the food chain. Beijing's demands of recognizing their sovereignty, territorial integrity and core interests amounts to an equal relationship. How can America's ruling elite possibly accept that?

@joepup8348
@joepup8348 2 года назад
@@GeopoliticsInConflict I think the ruling elite can understand (but not accept) these things simply by reading basic Chinese history, as Dr. Hammond suggests. China is a fully developed state with a history that stretches back millenia, during which time it has risen and fallen many times. Over the long sweep of history, it has developed mechanisms and institutions to not only remain stable and intact, but to prosper, emerging as the world's largest and most advanced economy long before the Age of Colonialism. Which is key because, yes, China developed separately from the West as Dr. Hammond pointed out, and therefore represents a civilization distinct from it. And one of the key differences is that it became wealthy and powerful without colonizing anyone or expanding. Understanding this history should cause America's ruling elite to at least understand Beijing's demands (and I think 'demand' is too strong a term) for sovereignty and territorial integrity. But they will ignore Chinese history, and so they will not understand, much less accept, what amounts to a simple desire for an equal relationship. No matter how much China contributes to the world economy, to ending poverty and hunger both within its borders and without, no matter how China in fact enhances our quality of life Stateside by providing high quality products at affordable prices. (And I am sure that many Americans will scoff at that phrase 'high quality' while they read it on their iPhones or laptops that are made in China, mostly with Chinese parts.) The idea that we should have an equal relationship does not make sense to them, because an equal relationship means we have to treat the Chinese equally. That simply cannot be. Because the Chinese are not Western.

I hope this will make western people understand the Chinese more. I am Chinese and it is so frustrating to be portrayed as a villain . Time and time again, the Chinese government has offered an olive branch that it wants to cooperate; it wants to talk; it has no interest to dominate others; it doesn't interfere in other countries. It wants to create a community with a shared future for humanity. This is the very essence of Chinese thought down the ages. Live and let live.

Perhaps the word TAO had slipped your mind for the moment. If one understands what TAO Li is, one would have much easier times seeing thru the Chinese leaders’ thoughts, both in classical and modern thinking. Chinese‘s deep thinking often got buried in too many words. Especially from one who knew of TAO yet of Buddha’s Dhamma (meaning truths that do not cause sufferings, Buddha’s teachings). That’s where many disconnects happened. The ideas were jumbo… in search of the Truth, Dhamma, which TAO learners had little knowledge of. TAO learners were essentially Dhamma learners. But Confucius, Lao Tze and many other great Chinese philosophers, perhaps were not privileged enough to have learned from the Lord Buddha’s teachings. As superior as TAO are, Dhamma are super supreme and the only path to ultra enlightenment.. Too bad the Indian (less than 1% Buddhist) had decided Hindu was their one and only Dharma. Dharma are far inferior to TAO. May this brief paragraph transcend your thoughts a bit.

Great collaboration from Dr David, Dr Ross and Dr Ken Hammond. Like Dr Ross and Dr Ken, I visited China in the 1990s, 2002, 2006 and 2018. Frankly in my earlier 2 trips (90s and 2002) I was actually disappointed, the people (rude, spits, loud noises and well known crooked people on cheats and crimes also corruptions were bad), hardly can find public toilets, just under developed back then. In 2006 I could see changes, much much better and 2018 was like visiting another highly developed country. Prior to my 2018 China trip, I was in Austin TX just months before my 2018 China trip and comparatively China was astoundingly developed. Don't even talk about those China's high speed trains, US is just far behind in that category. Dr David, if you could allocate time and should travel bans are lifted, I would truly suggest a China trip for you, go witness the out of the world modernized cities and thousands of years old rural, mountainous landscapes - you will come back being accused "brain washed" by the China when you started telling the truths of what you witnessed in China and local Americans would accused you of lying. My 2018 trip to both cities and semi rural areas opened up my eyes, especially the local Chinese people's mentality, they were very helpful, corruptions and crimes were lowered that they're rarely heard of because of millions of hi-res facial cameras, corruption practices were severely punished and the one thing I was impressed was that their people were looking happy in general which is weird if what the western medias reported were correct, they all should looked gloomy for being suppressed (which is again fake news). I went to China for both business and leisure and wanted to find out the local Chinese views on their government, their livelihoods and overall progress of their country and similar to Harvard's study, it's easy to see how happy Chinese people are living there. I guess (just guessing) those multi millionaires who left China staying abroad could possibly be avoiding some kind of issues with the clamping down of corruptions or abused of "power" through their wealths. Anyway, no country's perfect including China but if I were to choose one to live in right now, it'll be China - for me.

As one Chinese historian once said that China is the only country that got bigger and bigger by being conquered by neighboring normadic warlike ethnic groups, not by invading others. Once the conqueror took over China's central plains, they got assimilated by the Chinese han group. They adopted local Chinese culture and became part of China (and Chinese history) instead. Most foreigners don't realize that there are as many as 56 different ethnic groups and, for centuries, in China each with their own dialect but communicated with one written language standardized by the Qin emperor in 200 bc.

Chinese dynasties rose and fell for 5 thousand years. They fell because the King of Heaven lost his mandate to take care of the people. The rise of a new dynasty was always supported by peasant revolutions. Even the Yuan and the Qing thrived after China was conquered because they adopted the Chinese system. They became almost indistinguishable to the Chinese Dynasties. If they did not, the Chinese people will rise up against them. So why is the West dictating to the Chinese people what they should do? If the CPC is so bad, the Chinese will rise up against it, like they did against the Nationalist Chiang Kai Shek government. So what if Xi is emperor (he is not, and the CPC government is not the same as the Qing Dynasty). He now has the "Mandate of Heaven", and he would lose it if the Chinese people so decide. Not if the American people so decide. Westerners make a distinction between the Chinese people and the CPC. They say they LOVE Chinese people when everything in recent history tells us that they DON'T, except maybe Chinese food. That is like saying they hate the Qing Emperor Kangxi but love the Chinese people. The West has NO RIGHT to hate him, or the CPC. Only the Chinese people have that right.

They think chinese people are some sort of zombies who don't have brains and have no thoughts at all..they judge from how alot of chinese diaspora in the world who looks very "pragmatic, opportunistic" but actually..in my opinion lots of chineses are realistic. A simple example, with my family. We live in country that had been very hostile with "communists" and "vocal activists" starting the era of a dictator given by US in the 65s.. So lots of chinese descendants became muted in the eyes of other fellow citizens. They thought all chinese descendants don't like this country and will never give opinion and fight for this country. The thing is people don't understand or don't want to stand in our stand point of view. Chinese people and lots of activists and vocal people were killed during 65s with communists accusation without any trials. The "muted" demeanor was caused by oppression. And lots of chinese think rather that speak out, number 1 priority is our safety and life. We then live in survival mode. But behind the closed door, some of us are actually talk about the country's politic situation like my family. Even with very quiet voice, my family really talk and exchange their views and opinions about politic issues happen even during the dictatorship era. Now when we are free from that regime, some young generations are actually getting more and more vocal and give opinions about this country and like I had predicted people don't like what we are saying. Why? Because when chinese people speak, we speak very realistically and very bluntly 😅😅😅😅😅😅 People are shocked when I speak ill about bigoted politicians and think that what I did because I'm in stage of culture shock that I kept talking about politics. When actually, my family had talked about politics since I know it. It's just we only speak about it behind closed door. 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

Many Americans risked their lives and even died supporting China against Imperial Japan. Who else did anything like that in China's history? Chiang Kai Shek was an authoritarian dictator, but Mao Zedong was nothing but a gangster. A murderous and treacherous thug who was simply more cunning then his contemporaries. Read the real history of the CCP, not just a load of propaganda. In fact, Mao did not even believe in Communism or the improvement of living conditions for the peasants. He believed only in power, and betrayed everyone who associated with him.

@@konaIII All your crap about 'Mandate of Heaven'. What was heavenly about Mao Zedong? After he came to power he starved and robbed his own people to buy nuclear technology from the Soviet Union. He made continual economic mistakes and bizarre political decisions, resulting in the unnecessary death of large numbers of people. The Chinese people who 'love' the CCP seem to have forgotten all that. Or maybe they don't want to remember because it doesn't fit the current narrative. They remind me of the German people in the 1930's who supported someone they knew was a brutal tyrant because they thought he would lead them to overwhelming international power. I have news for you. Western democracies with all their faults and weaknesses know a tyrant when they see one. Eventually they unite, push back and fight to the end. We would sooner die then lose our freedoms. What will the Chinese people fight for? A new car? A better apartment? A half baked belief they are great because the dictator has convinced them with parades and propaganda? 'Western values' are universal values to which all humans aspire, whether they know it or not. That is why CCP China is experiencing growing opposition from the rest of the world. The CCP may be able to buy off a few poor countries, but those places will drop China like a hot potato when they see the way the wind is blowing. Even the contemporary German State which has done so well from the China trade is having second thoughts. The majority of Australians saw through your crap early on, and the rest of the world saw the way that China tried to punish them. Unfortunately for you, Australia has more genuine friends an allies then you will ever have.

Another great guest, another great presentation. Congrats Dave and Ross. It's always a pleasure to listen to people with a broad (lateral) perspective, instead of focusing on a small area of interest. It's even more enlightening to listen to people with historic (longitudinal) views of a subject. I would call this a 3-D view of the current situation. Narrow-minded politicians disregard history. They are only thinking about the past year and the next quarter. They will assume their own way as being the only course that events would play out. It's often a recipe for disasters. China is not only a physical country. It's more perceived as a cultural unit with a heavy historic importance attached to it. The Zhonghua (or, Han, if you like it easier) culture almost dictates the people's moral boundaries. There were exceptions of course, but you can almost hold people accountable for breaking those boundaries. Those are not even laws written in black and white. I think this sort of ethical restraints is not practiced as extensively in the West. This is, to me, one of the important differences between the East and the West.

That is not exactly true. There was little to no problem when China was poor and backward. The problem with China started and grew to its present crescendo when China grew, prospered and advanced technologically. To the stage where it could and will more than likely supercede the US and the West, with its potential implications. So it's all about maintaining the primacy, hegemony and dominance of the US and the West. It has nothing to do with the meta narratives of the US and the West about democracy, human rights and freedom or so called misunderstanding of China by the West.

But we are also very supportive of China’s rise and economic progress. We want China to succeed. Singapore is one of the largest investors in China. Singapore also has good friendly ties with Taiwan. The Singapore army does training in Taiwan, as well as in Western Australia. The US needs to look at China as a great opportunity to grow together. China is not interested in ‘policing’ the world. As a Chinese, I authenticate what he says on this topic. However, I would like to add one point. The current ruling party in Taiwan is DPP, Democratic Progressive Party, claims to go for the pursuit of independence of Taiwan, which established in 1986. Now they have the majority seats on congress and all the executive governments, they don't go for that pursuit, instead, the Party becomes corrupted in every corners and puts restraint on press freedom and human rights. At meantime the party is willing to be a puppet of the United States go against China. It has been hurting on every aspect of Taiwan both on domestic and international position. A great talk by Dr. Hammond! I was a bit surprised to hear that 47% of people in Taiwan want immediate reunion with the mainland. As someone who was born in Taiwan and left there 20 years ago, I thought that percentage might be more like 5-10% based on the news I still occasionally follow. I do believe the majority of people in Taiwan now lean toward either independence or status quo, but pro-unification support is definitely not zero (I support re-unification, but I am not in Taiwan anymore). The Western media always seems to fail to bring this up, perhaps intentionally. Like what Dr. Hammond point out, Taiwan is a province of Republic of China, under the Constitution of the Republic of China. But disagreements exist in which government is the legitimate government of China. I feel a bit sad that only a handful of tiny countries still recognize Republic of China as the legitimate government of China, but I guess that's what it is. Got to look to the future. Taiwan probably will have a more prosperous future under PRC governance than DPP governance.

All politicians around the world (especially those from America and its allies, not forgetting Australia) should listen to this talk and invite Dr Hammond to hold training sessions for their officials including ASPI.

Actually it must be point out that the west once respected and was willing to learn from China its culture and philosophy. Ever since Marco Polo has been to Beijing, the East (mainly China) has become a topic for western people to fantasize and imagine. There were western collectors who loved silk and porcelain and there were sinologist who believed that Confucius is the true philosophical king which was spoken of in Ancient Greece. However, as the west projected its power to the rest of the world, the distance between it and China shrank and China grew more familiar. During the late Qing Dynasty, UK, Portugal and other European countries all sailed East to China and there they found a great empire which isn’t what they thought it was. The respect faded away slowly. Then the UK and Portugal kickstarted colonization in China, with HK and Macaw respectively. By then, China was finally considered as just another one of the kingdom built by an inferior race considered by the West found anywhere in Asia or America. This helped the West to regain confidence over China and any other civilizations. But it ended up becoming the nail in the West’s coffin: the confidence finally became overconfidence and finally arrogance. Then comes white supremacy, eurocentrism and American exceptionalism. When it wants to understand China and the world again in today’s stage, it is too late.

Dr. Hammond is great. The "rule based order" means the followings: 1. You do what I say, but not what I do. 2. What you have is what I have but what I have belongs to me. Is it what an evil empire is made of?

Thank you, Prof. Hammond, for your keen and clear discussion. Your long and thorough study of Chinese history makes you be a scholar who profoundly understands China of the present day. The US as a whole nation should benefit from many scholars of China study like you by setting up a kind of agency to engage in a public communication that will induce American people to rethink and understand China in its right and relevant context. Unfortunately, this idea might not be accepted by the US government if someone in the White House does not believe in the philosophy of war by Sun Tze, more than 2,500 plus years ago, that in a competition, you need to know yourself and your competitor.

Hi David & Ross. Read an article saying that Japan invaded Okinawa (was another name belonged to China) and occupied few hundreds years ago and when WWII ended Japan purposely left about 310,000 of her soldiers behind in Taiwan. So Japan had plans to get back the island. All these descendants will definitely play heavy role in destabilizing Taiwan and aim towards independence. How true are these?

it was not a few hundred years ago. it was in Qing dynasty. 1895 Japan used power to invaded it. but it was returned to China after WW2, only separated from mainland since 1948,when Chang kai sheh escaped from mainland with his army and soldiers, that was he and chairman Mao's fight. it was civil war, nothing to do with US, but Changkaisheh's wife and her family were involved with US.

This is the most informative and extremely impartial discussion I have ever heard about the history, culture, social, economic and political truth of China.it is advisable for the politicians of the western world,especially the US to do the same by digging impartially the real China at all times. For the welfare of mankind we should discard the idea of win-win , instead applaud the SHARE thinking shaping the future destiny of the whole world. In other words, China and the western world sometimes work separately, sometimes cooperatively with the same purpose, for the welfare of our world.
