Western leaders are increasingly committed to reducing their trade dependence on Beijing - de-risking but not de-coupling. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is in China trying to revive an economic relationship that is more strained than it has been for decades. China specialist Alicia Garcia Herrero tells us what this means in practice.

We can discuss whether it’s China or the US who emits more CO2 but the fact is the atmosphere doesn’t distinguish countries. It emissions full stop. These are emitted by people, not countries. The per capita criterion is the only objective, realistic one. The rest is ideology.

De-risking is the first step to De-coupling. US is just weighting the best option. Regardless of EU, UK or the US totally decoupling from China, the impact most likely be 35% China and 65% decoupled countries. Recovery for China will be long and tough but the fallout of the other countries could be total irrevocable economy collapse

@@INTJ791I mean I wouldn’t say it would collapse cause they’re developed enough to cushion a lot but it sure would make their economy go really really bad for a long time. You just need to look at the breakdown of their gdp. The top 2 categories ( industry/ wholesale and retail) account to almost half of their gdp in 2022. And more than 20% of their gdp comes from exports of goods and services. So I can only speculate but I’m pretty sure that are not the non western countries driving those exports. Not to mentioning that a lot of their gdp comes from investments both foreign and domestic. So how are they going to keep up their investment power if the western money flow dries up? I’m not saying the west wouldn’t suffer. It sure would. Completely cutting ties with China is almost impossible for now because we rely on them so much. On the other hand, just like the west drove China to become what they are today we can do the same somewhere else. and yes I know. The world is changing. but the truth is that as of now western countries together “control” most of the global economy.

This was a true win win, everyone benefitted from this, now that China is becoming more and more hostile, we aren't ignorant of what is happening on the Chinese internet. A lot of face has been given to China for a long time, a lot of respect has been given and a lot of room has been given to companies subsidised by the Chinese government to undercut domestic companies. The warnings and advice were ignored so it's high time we de-risk our investments in the east Asia. China has soured this relation and it will be the only one losing out be backing out of this mutually beneficial relationship. We in the west will find others like Vietnam, the Philippines, India or Indonesia diversifying our supply chains. The downsides for the west are minimal. Of the countries you mentioned above, they're essentially part of China's global supply chain with many companies there coming from China itself. The downsides for the west are minimal - Yeah right.
