How refreshing, a midlife crisis that doesn't involve fast, flashy cars or Hell's Angels type two-wheeled transport. I'm glad you not only rose to your personal challenge, achieved it with no small measure of aplomb, but nonchalantly chucked in the ascent of Ben Nevis to boot, having found yourself with a spare day and nothing booked in your social diary. 👏🎊🏆🎈🎉👍 Glad to se you made it in one piece and thanks for sharing the journey! *RESPECT!*
Nice. Great achievment to walk it in 4 days. Thx for sharing! Walked the trail by myself but for me it was a slow hike in 10 days. I still love to watch vids from other hikers. Greetings.
Great video, Peter. Done it twice a few decades ago and the route looks slightly different and more eroded. Excellent hints and advice and your ascent of Ben Nevis was applaudable after 4 days on the WHW. CHAPEAU.
Hey Peter, nice video! I’m planning to do the whw next month with a travel buddy of mine. It‘s our first several-day hike and we‘re trying to solve it in about 9 days, but I’m still not sure what kind of shoes to wear tbh. How was your experience with the saucony peregrine? Would you recommend trail running shoes for the whw in general? We‘re wild camping btw, if that makes any difference considering weight etc.
Thanks! Obviously shoes are a big issue that'll get you all kinds of answers. Personally, I love lightweight trail shoes over clunky stiff walking boots as they allow my feet to move about and connect better with the trail. Other people would be horrified to hear that and insist you need ankle support (especially if carrying your own pack). However, I have run on trails for a few years and do exercises to strengthen my ankles so haven't experienced any bad twist-overs in a long time. That said, trail shoes are definitely up to the job for the WHW's terrain; it's down to your own preference, feet, ability and confidence. Best of luck! I hope you have fun. I'm a little jealous :)
Great video / adventure Peter , I have done the WHW 3 times and the Ben once , makes me want to do the walk again although that is me sitting cosy in the house watching you in all weathers ☺️ , take care and hope to see more of your walks in the future
Walking, Hiking and camping used to be free in Scotland as passed by the Scottish Parliament until they licenced Loch Lomond and Trossachs Park to charge people for camping in the area they control thus taxing the people of Scotland for the Freedom to Roam, the area they control get's bigger every year. Time it was stopped and give us our right to roam back. Freedom for Indigenous Scots.
@@billyandrew The reason they clamped down was because of ignorant people making these areas into shit holes. They just leave everything behind to lie rotting.
Unfortunately the local kids ruined it for everyone by holding parties around the area trashing everywhere they stayed and leaving a complete mess everywhere, can’t blame the government for crap behaviour!
Lovely video and nice going doing it in 4 days and Nevis the next! Hoping to do this late may/early june this year. Was this early/mid or late may out of interest?
Jeez I was knackered just watching that. Great effort mate. Im hoping to do WHW this year .planned for 6 days staying in accom defo not camping. I can understand you wanting to challenge yourself .Im walking the Wales Coastal Path and usually set each stage to challenge me and also where its convenient for public transport. I churn out loads of vids but mainly different golf courses so not got time to do much editing. Im drawing the line at the walk past and having to go back and pick it up. I have a wee laugh about that with some other hikers that you tube. I dont climb mountains normally but you have whetted the appetite for Ben Nevis.
I walked the GGW in 2017 but no filming that time. I would like to do it again…or maybe combined WHW + GGW! As I live in California now it’s harder to do more Scottish walks but I hope to get back there as soon as possible.
@@PeterHobleytheOCEnglishman Springs is always enjoyable for a thru hike, im looking to start on the 5th. Going to finish it off with a trek up big old ben nevis, thanks for replying 👍
What an awesome video, my friend. Stunning nature scenery and just a peaceful moment watching your adventure. I have not been on a hiking mission like that in a long time, but you motivated me to get out there and do more. Thank you guys and sending you much love.
I thoroughly admire your application Peter. When I saw the title of your vlog I though you were off your nut. Saying that I did enjoy your journey and always enjoy the scenery on the WHW - when you can see it. I'm heading there next week but will be wild camping all the way. Praying to the weather gods. 🙏 Frogger? 😂😂 Classic reference. Thanks mate.
Thank you Jack! I hope you have a great time on the Way. I’m kinda jealous! After watching a bunch of other videos I’m also keen to try “proper” backpacking so I’m already pondering other Scottish trails, of which there are many of course. As I’m back in California I’m planning a trial run on Catalina Island at the end of October when it’s not a bazillion degrees. Won’t be any rain for sure so there’s that 😂.
@@PeterHobleytheOCEnglishman Not my first WHW rodeo but every time is different. I'm taking my time this journey unless the weather dictates a rapid pace. I hope you get back to Scotland. I thoroughly recommend the Southern Upland Way or the John O'Groats Trail. Both very different. Both challenging in their own way. Take care mate. Safe travels.
Top tip. If you want a less crowded WHW start the walk mid week. Most people start Friday, weekend or Monday. Start on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and there will be far fewer people on your section.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm planning to do the WHW next year - though, I'm planning on 8 days ;) I want to take an extra day in Fort William and make it up Ben Nevis, but I'm really not sure if I can make it after hiking 8 days. So my current plan is to take that extra day, and if the weather permits it, at least make it up to the halfway loch, and then go from there.
Lovely video ! Love the edit and your humor , new subscriber already ! Me and my cousin will be walking the WHW next may during 8 days with our backpacks and camping gear and I'm really looking forward to it !!
Had to laugh when you said the Kingshouse wasn't getting any closer. It's one of the worlds great illusions! That and the railway station at Corrour when you are walking down from Ben Alder.
I did it last year with a stupid amount of equipment with ambitions to do it in 5 days but after the lomond stretch I wisely decided to stretch it out to 6 🤣
Great video, thanks. Lovely to see it all again. A few of us did it in the Scouts in the late 80’s over five days unsupported. That was tough, but one of my best life experiences.
Did it 20 years ago my one and only long distance route rained every single day, got piss wet through ,carried too much weight knackered my feet up but loved the experience , day one is a killer with the distance , 4 days is tough
I wore Saucony Peregrine 11 trail running shoes. A little unorthodox but I like to be “light and nimble” and never really get on with big “proper” hiking boots.
Interesting question and of course everyone’s experience will vary. That said, on this trip I tried both Seal Skinz and regular athletic-type socks. The Skinz quickly filled with water anyway but they did keep my feet warm. However, the regular socks would also quickly warm up even after I splashed through puddles or wet grass. Basically I found if I kept moving my feet never got cold. Of course, if there was an emergency and I was inactive they’d probably get chilly. I therefore also carried a dry pair if I needed to go into “survival mode.”
Wonderful video! I am planning to do a section of the WHW this fall. I'm going to take it slow and really take my time to enjoy Scotland. With your pace and energy you could try The Walk of the World in Nijmegen. 4 days x 50 km.
Brilliant recording, thanks for sharing it. I’m heading there in April do it for the 2nd time, last time was 12 years ago when I ran most of it. It’ll be a leisurely pace this time round.
Godd video but your comment about the poor campers at Kinghouse made me smile. I camped there in May 22, in the woods.🤣 l loved in. I walked down Glen Evite in the most horrendous rain. Good fun
I did feel so bad for them as I stood in t-shirt and shorts looking out the window as the sideways rain lashed them and their tent was flapping wildly. I hope they look back on it as part of the adventure. I’m sure they were toughies! 😂
@Peter Hobley the OC Englishman when I was there two guys turned up, threw up a trap, put a ground sheet and and in the morning they were clearly comfortable.
i wish i could walk and walk like that i am jealous i have got a bad ankle i hope that it gets properly better but it has been a long time now and it makes me a bit sad that i never did all this stuff while i could
