The Wheel Drill brought to you by JK Whited of Baseball Rebellion. Use the Wheel drill in your baseball training when you are trying to fix your downward swing path. This is a great drill to help a hitter feel the early tilt in their swing and then feel the upward swing path through contact!

All my hitters warm up with this great drill during instruction sessions. Works great

Thanks for this drill, you know what you are talking about, all the elites players swing that way, all of them.

I could be wrong, but looks like a backside collapse to me. Front shoulder would elevate too soon, back side collapses, hands move too high in which the barrel follows (barrel follows the knob) from low to too high giving the barrel a short time in the hitting zone. I understand you are saying it is a feel/exaggeration drill, but a back side collapse shouldn't be part fo the feel, should it?

Shoulders do what bat does, if turned with scap loading that does not surrender.

I think you meant the bat does what the shoulders do. The bat follows the shoulders, not the other way around. More accurately, the barrel follows the hands, relatively speaking.

For anyone who may think this drill is bs, see also: Hitterish.com's, "hitting drills to avoid" as well as, "Bryce Harper's swing 2015-2016, What happened?"

Nice drill. A rod really dislikes the Ferris wheel approach. He explained how Edgar Martinez worked with him and David Ortiz when they were coming up. They wanted to swing down on the ball. I went to a White Sox game and I heard there hitting coach on BP saying get on top of the ball. What are your thoughts on this?

Joseph Bassil You are exactly right on this, Joseph. This guy demonstrating here has no real world success with this hitting flaw approach that he's glorifying. This is the absolute worst way to go. All that he says is wrong is actually right.

There are a large number of major league and ex-major league players who talk about what they felt rather than what they actually did. You can watch plenty of A-Rod video on RU-vid and see that his shoulders do rotate in a more tilted-Ferris wheel motion and he definitely did not swing down to the top of the ball. You don’t hit as many HRs as he did by hitting the top of the ball. That breaks the laws of physics. Don’t forget that this is a drill for players who have extreme shoulder and bat path issues. Not intended for players who already have a handle on what their shoulders need to do. Thanks for watching! - JK Whited

Larry Rush give It 10 years and we’re gonna have a bunch of Mark Reynolds in the league, barely hitting .200 but with 45 home runs, and these dudes will think that’s a success

HBK360MUSIC I would also agree that hitting close to .200 is not great but if backed by 45 home runs and 100 RBIs then you’re still helping your team win. If that run production isn’t there than I completely agree with you. It might interest you to know that rarely is there a year where even 5% of all major league hitters bat .300 or better. This data goes all the way back to the 1940s. Usually you’ll see somewhere between 2% and 4% of the league bat .300 or better. So it’s not like .300+ hitters have gone away, it’s just not as glorified by the media because it’s not as entertaining. Thanks for watching! - JK Whited, Baseball Rebellion

Baseball Rebellion and what % of players will hit 45 home runs and 100 rbi? I’d guess 2-3 guys per year tops (only 1 this past season). It seems to me like the common goal today is to teach kids how to hit home runs rather than teach kids how to hit. People would rather look up to Josh Donaldson than Miguel Cabrera, and to me that’s totally wrong.

I think you have it backwards. D1 All American here. The toughest pitch is the down and away. Low and in was the easiest thing to hit. This drill would cause me to get under and pull off the down and in pitch.

no big league hitter goes down in the back first..... you are insane...never learned how to hit....

All good hitters lead with the hips which is what this drill teaches you. Hopefully you're not coaching hitters to chop down at the ball. If so, you might want to update your resume.
