Edit: To people saying "It is an April fools joke!" It is not. It has been up for over a year and he has never claimed it to be one. He has responded to people criticizing it well after April harshly defending the article. It is not a joke. I want to make this absolutely clear; I have no issue with Garret on a personal level. This video should purely be taken about responsibility when speaking about others/posting reviews. Do your research. Don’t lie about content. Don’t claim fowl play when you have zero evidence. Content creators have a responsibility to check what they are saying. People will hear what we say and RUN WITH IT. That is why my Goodkind video relies on direct quotes and in context statements. Not speculation and hunches.

I personally liked the WOT, but the characters are not the best written. All the women share similar characteristics: they get angry quickly, they are easily annoyed by the simplest of things, they tug their hair, their inner dialogue about men is very similarly negative, they talk about how men don't understand, and how the men should know better, and how try to figure out different way to manipulate men and other people in general. This guy's article seems very sexist and poorly researched, but yes, the characters, especially the women are not as well written as you present in this video. In fact, I would so far as to say many of them are carbon copies of each other, with different names, titles, and positions to make them seem as very different. I think my favorite female character in fantasy would be Rhapsody, from the Symphony of Ages series. This is how female character should be written inmo, or even the main lead from Mistborn.

He seems to be a wanna be author. The "joke" got him responses, got him noticed by fantasy readers. Not all of those readers enjoyed the Wheel of Time, unlike yourself as well as me (in fact I've just started a re-read yet again as I love it so much). As a result those who might agree with him could possibly be tempted to check out his books that he provides a link to at the end of his article. After posting the article he may well have seen an increase in his sales, which in turn led him to leave the article up. Anyway, whatever the true reason for the article, it was a terrible thing to have done. As you say in your video, there are areas in the series that could be improved, it is not perfect. The guy just raves about incorrect information, misleading potential readers of the series with blatant lies. In many respects he comes across like a Donald Trump clone, spreading untruths knowing that a certain base will never bother to fact check him. A rotten thing to do, whether as a joke of as a genuine article regarding a well loved work of fiction. I sincerely hope that he gets what he deserves, failing book sales and a thorough destruction of his chances of ever making a living as an author.

Well and this particular "factor" at least paid lip-service to the fact that RJ was the one responsible for some of those tropes becoming tropes at all (though not the Chosen One bit, obviously, as that was already a trope when RJ came along), because of how popular and influential WoT was. So criticizing him for using tropes that weren't really tropes until after he used them is obviously not a valid criticism, and ends up being (unwittingly) a compliment instead.

As a normally powerful, yet reserved and careful person, it's really jaw dropping to find a woman so strong-willed and adventurous (i mean, she starts of seeking the horn of valere and all that) who would be so interested in someone like Perrin (or me), who is so serious, methodical and prefer to keep things straightforward. She's the kind of girl that would fascinate him and the way she and Jordan use the Saldean culture to aggravate Perrin to anger, letting him open up about his thoughts emotions, leading to improving the communication and deepening the connection to each other... is just hilarious and totally believable from my perspective. And she herself grows from a bit of a rash woman looking for freedom and glory to a woman who devotes herself alongside Perrin to fight the darkness and lead the people that have come to rely on their knowledge, abilities, and strong leadership. Her flight from a hated duty and position became a choice she made for people she came to love and the wider people they both want to protect. She's not perfect. None of them or us are. But she's definitely best girl in my book.

Book 6 was 900 pages. Almost nothing happens in the first 600 pages. A better writer could have written the same content in less than 150 pages. All of the books have this problem, but this to me was the most egregious. Imagine if Robert Jordan knew how to write without pissing away page upon page on nothingness. He could have easily finished the series in his lifetime, and it would be better for it.

I think assigning intent to authors is generally gross and unnecessary, this is very disrespectful to RJ and how much he cared about finishing his work, people can have whatever issues or interpretations to an author's work, but to assume his intention and present it as fact when it is so wrong is next level! Also as a woman, I have a mixed range of emotions toward the female characters, some are complex, some are alright, others are shallow, this isn't particularly unique to the WoT mind you! and I find stuff like the bechdel test arbitrary, like is Gravity considered a sexist movie because the main character who is a female astronaut surviving on her own doesn't even have a conversation with another woman? that is so silly! also us girls are allowed to be catty, vulnerable, talk about boys or whatever we want! we aren't perfect, trying to write female characters as flawless is where most authors go wrong actually.

To me, their beginning as flawed, petty teenagers wasn't a problem, nor that they were sexist towards men (Men are only good for fighting and think with their breast hair, hurrdurr) since it made some sense and we saw the exact opposite happen in history and fiction all over (G.R.R Martin has depicted sexism in A song of ice and fire as well which added flavour to the world) but that there was no progression in character in book 4 (where I couldn't bear it any longer and stopped reading). G.R.R Martin also showed nuance. There were different kind of men and women who had different values but (up until book four) the only women not bullying every man was Moraine. I mean, they do constantly bitch, do constantly ignore it when someone demands an explanation, they do constantly annoy the crap out of me. Not because they are flawed, but because they don't change their ways. Example follows (attention slight spoiler, duh) At one point Egwene and Nynaeve attack Mat even though he just saved them from being imprisoned. He fucking saved their fucking lives and they bully him with the one power. I lost what little respect I had for them at that point and it was a day later or so that I abandoned the series. Another problem I had were all that fucking side stories. But anyway... What if Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi had used the Force in a violent way to ensure that Han gets them off Tatooine, also for the greater good of escaping the Empire and protecting the DS plans? I wouldn't have liked that nor would I have felt sympathetic towards them after showing a blatant abuse of the Force, even though they would have good reasons. I am cool with grey characters but Nynaeve and Egwene are simply idiots in my opinion and how anyone can like them is beyond me.
@myhr2320
@myhr2320 3 года назад
@@chrismath149 I love Egwene and Nynaeve. If you had keep going, you'd have red that they do apologize at one point, if very lightly, but you also get some insight about how they really are much more sorry than what they let out. Point is, all the WoT characters are flawed, they mess up, they wrong others, intentionally or not, but it's always motivated, and the characters are not unchanging, they interact, they sort things...and sometimes they don't. Like in real life. So yeah, don't sum up characters on one of their actions, it's also something we do in real life with people "this guy is a murderer", "she's a lier"...yes, but...there is context, there are nuances, there are motivations, and there can be change. It's not a reason to forgive everything, actions have consequences, but I'll be forever against the concept of eternal damnation.

It's been at least a decade since I read the books, but my overall memory / impression of the female characters was that (not all) but a lot of them really were just... so annoying at times. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for powerful female characters. The Aes Sedai and White Tower being a massive driving force in the world, the Wise Ones being respected leaders that no one, even from different clans, would dare to disrespect. The Seanchan being ruled by an Empress. Great concepts. I wholeheartedly prefer having female leads in the books I read. But when a lot of your dialogue is spent unnecessarily belittling the male characters and each other? They're just so damn arrogant and constantly vying to be the 'alpha' of whatever group they're in. I've never in my life enjoyed being around anyone like that, either male or female. In some of the worst cases it'll even come across as "Oh, it's a guy that's being verbally or physically abused? That's fine then. We'll laugh about it. He probably deserved it anyway." All I can say to that is... you can empower women without degrading men. Maybe I could do with a reread now that I'm not in my teens anymore, but... that's one of the biggest impressions the books left on me. That, and page long descriptions of the clothes people are wearing.

@XiongGou

I think that's a part of the story though. I personally found myself annoyed by many of the female characters because of their arrogance and dismissal of men, however they do so with good cause. (SPOILERS AHEAD) It was men in the Age of Legends that brought about the breaking through their own arrogance by opening the bore. This brought about the taint, leading male channelers to go mad and brought about a matriarchal society because men couldn't be trusted anymore. At the origin of this story it's been 3000 years since the breaking so people's biases are pretty firm in their minds. Which is why Logain's arc and the Black Tower is so important because in the end they were able to bring a redemption for men and remove the stigma, especially of men who can channel by their efforts in The Last Battle. If you read the story to it's conclusion the barriers between men and women begin to break down and mutual respect and honor are beginning to be established again.
@Sa1d1n
@Sa1d1n 2 года назад
@@XiongGou [SPOILER WARNING] you need to re-read the books. The men did not open the bore - they tried to patch the bore without the support of female channelers. The backlash of the Dark One is what ultimately tainted Saidin. The bore was opened by Age of Legends researchers in an attempt to find a new access to the true source. There was no 'male arrogance' to it, except perhaps by LTT thinking they could seal the bore without the support of female channelers. That said, he had no real choice - the female Aes Sedai would not join him. As Rand proves in the end of the WoT - if men and women had joined together during the Age of Legends, they may have succeeded in reforming the bore and trapping the Dark One then. If anything, it was the arrogance of the female Aes Sedai in not heeding the call of their Tamyrlin that should be called down in this case. Also, the universe in the WoT is not a 'matriarchal society'. There are matriarchal and patriarchal, as well as egalitarian societies in WoT. While the Aes Sedai and Ebou Dari are clearly matriarchal, most of the societies in WoT have strong patriarchal leanings - with typically distinct gender roles. While the overall gist of WoT is significantly more egalitarian than many other epics, it definitely does not fit the overall definition of a matriarchal society.

I have to admit, when I first started reading Eye of the World, I put it down after a couple chapters thinking it was derivative of Tolkien (I was also young and the LotR movies just came out so I was very attached to them). Black-cloaked riders, Mountains of Mist, the Third Age (even opening almost word for word the same way, 'legend fades to myth' and whatnot). But the similarities pretty much end with that surface level stuff. I read the first 7 or 8 books one after another and had taken a huge break between 9 and 10...like...a ten year break. It's actually what brought me to this channel, I had to look up summaries of the books before reading Crossroads of Twilight. And now that one is out of the way and I'm onto Knife of Dreams where I hear it picks up again. My problem with both men and women in the wheel of time is that there were few if any middle spectrum people. Nearly every character worth speaking of had eronious assumptions of how the opposite sex needed to guided by the sex of the person thinking the thought. I am married and will admit that there are times when I think thoughts of "women be like..." but there are many more sensible times where I know I am wrong and that my wife is right. I didn't see enough of that in the books. It didn't ruin the story for me (which I have physically read or had read to me, thanks audible, more than 6 times) but was an issue I had with RJ storytelling. There were great relationships in the series, but there was a distinct lack of open communication between couples that led to the same conflicts that I had a hard time believing that people of their caliber would not overcome. The closest it got was the double warder bonded couple in the last book, and it took their minds literally being linked to make it happen.

I very much agree with your assessment. the assumptions almost ALL the characters make about the opposite sex got very old after the 5th book. To be fair, I listened to the audio book so the way it was read may have influenced how I perceived the characters. Perhaps if I read the books instead my impression would be different. I finally gave up on Malazan last night and started WOT. It really broke my heart to do so because they are really well written. They just arent for me. I made it to the end of book 6 and cant go any further. Maybe ill come back to it one day, but ive been reading malazan for months and havent been enjoying or looking forward to reading like I normally do. That being said, I still have immense respect for Erickson and his vision. Wow. What an ambitious man. We as readers need to understand that not every popular series will connect with us, and that doesnt make the series bad. The guy who wrote this article seems like hes trying to get under people's skin, like hes trying to go against the grain to appear cool. We dont need that in the fantasy community. Good on you for speaking out Daniel. Lastly, readers, dont be afraid to DNF a book. Ive been struggling for days contemplating if I should set them down(because im a completionist), but at the end of the day, we read for enjoyment. We read to delve into another realm, to leave our mundane lives behind and enter a fantastic one. So if youre not enjoying a book, set it down, and move on. You can always return to it later, but theres always more books that will touch your heart around the corner ❤

I still don't like taking an odd review seriously, but I was afraid of ending up 3 or so books in and feel the need to stop because of sexist tropes or lack of female character development. I'm glad you took the time to respond to this as I've come to respect and trust your opinions on fantasy books, even if you may be WoT biased. This did diminish my fears from seeing both this article and several rough reviews on GoodReads.

I think for the most part they’re fine. The polyandry is kinda awkward no matter how you spin it though and I wish he’d gone for full on polyamory so that it wasn’t as unbalanced feeling. The other thing is his characters male and female are really opinionated about gender and the opposite gender especially and are just painfully wrong. And I don’t think that’s a sexism thing but it does get kinda annoying.

It was just a different cultural piece. Rand was not a womanizer and actually agonized about loving all three of them. It took Elayne and Min a bit to get comfortable with the Aiel concept of first sisters marrying the same man. Arguably, adopted first sisters can be closer than biological first sisters and the sisters are arguably closer to each other than they are even to their husband. Accepting cultures drastically different than your own is part of being a fantasy fan.

I am a woman over 70 and read the Wheel of Time books years ago - I still have them to re-read in the future. I loved the story. So many strong girls who matured to stronger women as the story progressed was amazing to me - as a reader of fantasy and science fiction, women as main characters, not needing rescue, are not common. I look forward to, and also fear, the series which will present the characters as others have envisioned, not as I did as a reader.

"His (Rand's) only flaw is that he sometimes goes crazy because he's just too powerful..." - well, sure if you ignore the madness caused by the Taint on Saidin or the voices in his head. Rand's going crazy from the Taint creates a ticking clock of whether he'll go crazy and destroy the world before he can save it from the Dark One. It serves to create story tension and (internal) character conflict when he questions his own sanity and ability to succeed. As a practical matter, the fact that Rand is so powerful and draws so much of Saidin makes it even more of a problem as it increases the amount of the Taint and crazy. Chosen One Trope: In the real world, we do have a magical prophesy about a "Chosen One" destined to save the world and all mankind - and people talk about him incessantly. In fact, there are entire religions devoted to him, wars fought in his name, and people cannot stop talking about him. Based our real world example, one might argue that people in the Wheel of Time don't talk about Rand enough, nor does he inspire near the blind faith and devotion that has actually occurred in the real world. Wheel of Time is not perfect. Frankly, I also believe that PoD, WH, CoT, and KoD could have (and should have) been edited down to 2 books. However, Garrett Robinson's criticisms are based on both factual flaws regarding the characters and their stories AND lack of literary knowledge around the fantasy genre. As for the absurd criticism regarding Jordan's desire to die before he's finished, most stories suggest that Jordan devoted much of his time before dying consolidating his materials and working with Sanderson to ensure that the series was completed the way he wanted it to be. There is no evidence to suggest that those stories are merely PR to make sure fans were onboard with someone else finishing the books to increase book sales. People are entitled to their opinions. It's too bad that they're not required to be based on reality when they express them.

Honestly, what gets me the most about this is that the guy actually did research, but only for stuff he thought he could pick on. He picks on Nynaeve's name, el'Nynaeve ti al'Meara Mandragoran. Except, wait a minute, he also says he gave up during the fifth or sixth book. The "el" at the beginning of her name isn't part of her first name. It's an honorific given to the Queen of Malkier. And Mandragoran is obviously Lan's last name, which she took in her marraige to him (iirc, the ti also signifies a maiden name, but I'm not positive). Trouble is, by the end of book six that still hadn't happened. Not only is Nynaeve's full name incredibly situational, popping up only a couple of times in the series, but this guy never even read far enough into the series to see it. He just looked it up after the fact to complain about it. Also, Man, now I'm really curious what the unprofessional bit that got edited out was.

Its so weird that these kinds of people don't understand that its not a case of "women being attracted to men is bad" the problem comes when the men never show such attraction and the women only ever seem to care about men and have no other motivations. That's literally not even sort of the case with wheel of time... every single male protagonist has a chapter talking about wanting to dance with pretty girls, so it would be weird if the women never ever expressed attraction to men. The amount of times this reviewer mentioned that the women just want to bone Rand made me so confused cause my reaction to read the first few books was "wow this book is incredibly unsexy and has 0 wish fulfillment for a series where the protagonist marries three women." Like, any time a woman shows interest in Rand, he immediately turns them down cause he clearly doesn't think of sex as a thing outside of relationships and marriage. Any power Rand possesses seems a billion times more like a burden than a thing any real person would want so its ridiculous to call him a Mary Sue... Also this is a world where WOMEN ARE IN CHARGE. It's literally a de-facto matriarchy where women are entrusted with all the power and men are treated like fools who can't be trusted with too much power. How could anyone read this and consider the women to not have agency when they're literally the ones calling the shots even on a systematic scale. Considering the white tower exists only for women, you can bet your ass that almost every single scene inside the white tower passes the Bechdel test with flying colors, so he must have just skipped those parts... The Shadow Rising starts with Min's entire motivation being that she's worried about Rand's status, and yet she mentions it I think one time and then never mentions it again for that entire chapter, focusing instead on the Aes Sedai and their mission and Egwene and Elayne and Nynaeve. This dude is a weird contrarian and disgustingly disrespectful to a person who died relatively young, unable to finish his life's work. Framing it like it was Robert Jordan's goal to die before finishing it is beyond ghoulish. I'm not even the biggest WoT fan but holy shit this was a ridiculous review and everything this guy publishes in the future should be absolutely scrutinized.
