Handling 65 lb iron tires, rolling and sizing them so they fit the wood cannon wheels. So I called this the wheelwright's gym. There is a lot of physical activity throughout the day so I really don't have a need for a gym membership.
At least not yet.

It is truly amazing what you do with what you work with. Even tho you have all you need to do the excellent work that you do, a lot of your equipment is what the wheel rights would have used at the turn of the century or before. A skill like yours is a dying thing that will be lost forever when you decide t o stop. That is one reason your work is so amazing. The story behind how you started this line of work is probably a very interesting one as well.
@sw923

Awesome video and really enjoy your equipment. beautiful wheels and tires. Your very skilled to say the least. My last name is Wainwright and my great grandfather actually built wagons and wheels on the eastern shore of Maryland in the early 1900's. My father grew up helping his grandfather and Ive enjoyed the stories of how it was done. We still have his anvil and many of the blacksmith tools. I'm sure he didnt have a sander as nice as the one you have and he didnt have a welder but heated and beat the steel together for the tire. I'll bet he would have loved having the equipment and tools we have today. I'll show my father your video I'm sure he will enjoy. Truly a trade that is going extinct. Ironically, Ive been a heavy equipment mechanic and welder for over 35 years so I guess the trade just changes course a little. Thanks so much for sharing.

My friend Joe Bird used to make tyhese sorts of things, however he would take a piece of steel and roll the whole length to diameter and then weld the next piece on and continue until he ended up with a great big coil of steel which he would then cut to diameter. Oh, and he was a great one for attaching a small hydraulic motor to the winding handle. He had those things all over the shop.
