In the books, it's all purposely very ambiguous, to show how different people can have very different interpretations about the same thing, doing crazy things over something they are not sure if it's even real or not. And it's not the main focus of the story, it's people and their actions, going against prophecies and faith, refusing predefined roles. I feel like what CDPR did in the games makes it into a generic fantasy trope, making Cuiri into a Chosen One, the Savior of the World who defeats the big evil and fullfills the ancient prophecy. Something the books were actively critisizing and satirizing. And it's pretty strange, considering how faithful the rest of the games are, it's only the Witcher 3 main plotline that changes so much and goes against the spirit of the book saga
