You may not know.... but you're become a real BADASS!

Been there more than a few times - South Twin has great views. You mention all the ledge-rock - the Appalachian mountain chain is one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth. Estimates place its age between 550 million and 1.2 billion years old. Also, you spoke about the stunted trees on your way up South Twin, from the Galehead Hut. They are the normal, indigenous trees of the area that have been stunted by the extreme weather, and some of them are 120 - 150 years old. There is a German word for them and it is 'krummholz.' The literal meaning is 'twisted wood.' Treeline is 3,000 - 4,000 feet lower in the Whites than it is in similar mountain ranges in temperate zones, due to the fierce weather conditions.
