The Who has many amazing songs and albums, but my favorite is their early live stuff. My Generation from their Live at Leeds remains my favorite - called by Pete "a mini opera" but a raw banging opera full of a number of clips from their Tommy album. Amazing Journey/Sparks from Live at Hull is another worth checking out. Probably one of Keith Moon's more amazing performances.

The Who have done a lot more than rock songs. You have many many years of material....but if you want to hear a song written & sung by Pete Townsend that will touch your heart and see he is so much more than that - then listen to this from one of his solo albums - a track called "And I Moved" - It's about after the death of Keith Moon & reduces me to tears everytime.....Behind Blue Eyes is such a wonderful track. Thankyou for choosing it.

Love you guys reacting to the WHO! I was at the official launch of the Who's Next album when they opened the new rock concert hall The Rainbow in London and, of course, blew us all away, especially on the synthesiser driven tracks of Baba O'Riley and Wont Get Fooled Again; which always blows you away live! I figured Behind Blues Eyes was Roger's song because of his amazing blue eyes... The Who, great live, great on albums...

The Who are always included in a discussion of the most important bands in rock history. In 1964 they were combining contemporary African American music with European avant-garde art concepts. They can rock as hard as the Stones (although they don't roll as well!), and they can absolutely be as Britishsweet as the Kinks. While many people praise them for their concept albums and 'opera', what makes them so brilliant to me is that you don't have to know any of the stories to get the songs. They are magnificent, fierce, breath-holding and brutish on their own. Don't get me wrong; Quadrophenia is always going to be a high point in music for me (I actually have the LP still, with the photos). But there are songs on both Quadrophenia and Who's Next that can make you cry, or make you rock out with orgasmic abandon without knowing the backstory. I'm not sure how much this particular song was involved in Lighthouse, but it just proves the point... FYI: the documentary The Kids Are Alright is really a must-see for rock fans, a wonderful way to get the basic education on this band that was a little bit different and a lot bit great. By the way, I wrote this before watching your review-I know you'll really be moved: I've loved this song since I was about 13 years old.
@obbor4

It's great to hear that Patrick is playing guitar. He really does have a good voice, and he captures these styles very quickly, without any background in singing rock songs. Get it going while you are young. Jim Morrison had no experience either, and look how it worked out for him. As for Pete Townshend, there is a large back story there. Mostly, it was The Kinks Ray Davies who sparked him to write these introspective songs. Ray was the best British songwriter of them all and he never had to pretend that he was from anywhere else!

This is a beautiful song from The Who, I can't remember hearing it before but I think I must have. It was on their Who's Next album released in 1971. Very melodic and a bit emotional, the lyrics are quite dark and I think can be interpreted in different ways. Other songs by The Who - Substitute, I Can't Explain and Pinball Wizard. Loads more of course. Good luck with your guitar playing and singing, Patrick, keep us up to date with how you're getting on. Yes, it is great that you have this second channel where other types of music can be reacted to, and other content as well which makes it more flexible if you like. Lots of songs from this period were shorter 3-4 minutes to meet the demands of commercial radio format of 3 songs in 10-12 minutes followed by 3-5 minutes of commercials. This is also why songs of this period are also likely to fade out since it made it easier for radio disc jockeys to blend into the next song.

No sappy BS from the who! Straight on beautiful lyrics and rock n roll. Once in a life time vocals. Insane drumming, bass, and lead guitar with an attitude. I've heard many great writers say it doesn't matter what the lyrics mean to them. Once they write and perform it, it then belongs to the listener to decide what it means to them. Great pick for a song today! Thanks.! You better you better, you bet:-)

All the members of The Who grew up in London, just after world War 2. It was a pretty dismal time to be a kid. The streets were rough, the country was trying to rebuild after the bombings. Teens are angry by nature, and the circumstances of their youth made it even rougher. This explains the lyrics a bit.

According to Pete Townsend, the song was originally written for a musical/rock opera that never happened ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_v4F_XHdz6o.html. ) It depicted a spy, a double agent, never able to voice his own thoughts and feelings. This also adds meaning to "if I swallow something evil" (reference to cyanide capsules) and "keep me warm, let me wear your coat" a reference to both the concept of owning up to being a spy (sometimes called coming in from the cold) and possibly not being honest even then, as "let me wear your coat" is like wearing the enemy's uniform so you blend in - the origin of the concept of a "turncoat."

The song was originally conceived to be from the perspective of a villain (in a concept album that wasn't created in the end). That's why some parts are - objectively speaking - emotionally immature. But nevertheless, it's very genuine and emotional impact is real. P.S. I don't think they meant "love" as specifically romantic love, just human emotions and relationships in general.
