Were The Who ahead of their time? YES!!! Absolutely they were. The Who sound like no other band before or since. They are arguably the most influential rock band of all time and indeed, THE greatest rock band of them all. And on-stage they were a force of nature.
@@kimrivera5302 No, the film is not a definitive version of Tommy. It's directed by Ken Russell. The definitive version is the original album, or The Who playing it live in 1969-70.
Even with English not being your first language you two still express yourselves wonderfully! Your emotions shine through without even saying a word. Thank you for sharing your reactions with us!
This is what you call "Rock opera," and it is brilliant. And speaking of love, every woman needs a man who looks at her the way Andrei looks at Dominika! 😍🥰😊
The Who at their best and most creative. Pete Townshend was an intellectual who strove to keep the music close to its rock 'n roll roots, which is to say not pretentious and "artsy", but at the same time he wasn't afraid to explore the musical and artistic possibilities of rock music. Even writing a rock "opera", Tommy. This song was operatic to say the least. And the band itself was world-class. Yes, rain and reign was wordplay. Good catch
In the '60s the Beatles were the Cute ones, the Rolling Stones were the Bad Boys, the WHO were the Crazy ones and Led Zeppelin were the Cutting Edge ones. Pete Townsend of the WHO is a composite genius who created the RockOpera TOMMY and QUADROPHENIA, which this song is part of! The Who are a group to do a DEEP dive into as their music has been used all over for decades! ALL of tge CSI shows use WHO songs for their theme songs! Enjoy my beautiful friends!❤❤❤❤
I disagree. The Who were the band at the cutting edge: hard rock, punk, garage, power pop, metal, rock operas and even electronica were influenced by them. Plus they pioneered the Marshall stack and enormous volume at their shows before anyone else. Also the first act to incorporate laser lights at their shows. True pioneers. Zeppelin were a great band, but they were hardly cutting edge.
Led Zeppelin, you are joking. You can't compare them with the who. Anyway they were still swinging in the trees 🌴 and page was learning to play the guitar from Vik Flick of Herman's hermits .and the James bond theme
@brianshockledge3241 agree and disagree. They weren't cutting edge, but they were a great band. And to call them a covers band is just wrong. Or ignorant. There's a handful of blues covers that they should have given credit for. That's it. And another handful that were completely re-written. So, they still deserve a co-writers credit for those ones. What about the rest of their songs, the ones that don't sound like anything else. Did they cover "Black Dog", "Since I've Been Loving You" or "Kashmir"? How about "Ramble On", "Achilles Last Stand" and "The Rain Song"? Are they covers?
@@davescurry69 They were great muscians no doubt about it but they built their reputation on covers they claimed as their own. Their first four albums were littered with covers.
Nothing can come close to the music that was put out during the 60/70/80/90’s. Just so many beautiful songs in so many different genres. Love The Who. They rock!! 🇬🇧
You can definitely take the 80s and 90s out of that. I was born in 1965, the 60s 70s have more meaning than the 80s and 90s. There were good songs from both of those decades, but not like the 60s and 70s.
An all time fave. I was 17 when this came out and it brings back lots of memories. I'm glad that you enjoyed it but I knew that you would! It's so much fun to watch reactors when they push play and don't know what they are in for, but we do! We can't wait to watch your reactions when we know of the greatness in store for you ahead of time, haha! Yes, I would say that they were ahead of their time. They were already performig their first rock opera "Tommy" during Woodstock.
Quick Who story. The year is 1982. I and one of my college friends had tickets to The Who concert at Rich Stadium Buffalo NY which included a bus to the concert from our smallish city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. We had prepared various treats (now legal in Canada) for our enjoyment throughout the day. At the border, however, we became concerned and consumed the whole day's worth in one go. Needliess to say, we were already in an altered state when we arrived at the stadium. The Who played this song as an encore, and just as they started, it began to rain. After the number, Daltry joked, "Not even the Rolling Stones could have pulled that off."
🇬🇧 What a find so so strange, is back in the day, I really really didn't like this genre of music. But now, I love it so much I get all choked up. Just like Andrei! It's so good. I'm actually mad at myself for not listening when I was younger 😮❤ I have tears in my eyes right now! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I still have the double album today that I bought around 1980 and just about wore OUT on my parents record player ,, this track was and still is my favorite track from that MASTERPIECE
One of the greatest songs by one of the greatest bands. Daltrey kills it, legendary voice and performance. Beautifully written, engineered, produced. So good. Epic. Perfect. Last song on Quadraphenia, would suggest hearing The Real Me, the first song (w/ lyrics) from Quadraphenia. You are right, the Who were ahead of their time. They were early adopters of feedback, synthesizers & programmable loops, writing Rock Operas, minimalism
I wish there had been a camera in the studio filming Roger Daltrey, aka Leather Lungs Daltrey, when he was recording the vocals on this song. It must have been quite the sight to see, the way he sings with so much passion on Love Reign O'er Me. Hard to believe Roger turns 80 years old tomorrow. BTW, The Who are performing several gigs in London at the end of March for their annual Teenage Cancer Trust charity concerts. Squeeze is the open act. Robert Plant and Eddie Vedder are also performing. Teenage Cancer Trust is similar to the Ronald McDonald House, except it is geared toward teenagers who are battling cancer.
My favorite who song of all time!! You got your standard who songs like "won't get fooled again" "who are you" & "pinball wizard" etcetera! But there's just something powerful and beautiful about Love reign o'er me!!!! I actually don't play this song on purpose because I don't want to wear it out because you can do that to your favorite songs!! That way every time I hear it I got a smile on my face and really enjoy it like right now!!!!! Great reaction as always guys!
super album - so many good songs - a great roller coaster ride - some songs get me all misty because they resonate strongly with feelings many of us felt in our formative years... moon also absolutely crushes it in this work of art
I'll say this, as a young 57 year old man that has followed The Who for quite some time, this tune is without question, a masterpiece. On the flipside, your reaction was priceless, literally. The way he looks at you while you're explaining how much you love this song. Wishing you both the absolute BEST life has to offer!
I absolutely LOVE the entire Quadrophenia album - it was written as Rock Opera & released as a double album. You should listen to it from beginning to end.
Yes, they were ahead of their time. So many amazing songs, some studio versions, some live. If you've never seen it, you MUST watch the 'live from Shepparton Studios" version of "Won't Get Fooled Again".
What a splendid reaction! You made perfect sense, my dear. ❤ The song closes out The Who's second double album, this one entitled, "Quadrophonia." And, yes, the band was definitely ahead of its time, and leaders of the pack among other great bands of the era.
The Who, so cool, behind blue eyes and can you see the real me are a couple of my favourites but there are so many great songs. Quadrophenia, watch the cloth moth !
🇬🇧 I absolutely love you two. You're amazing. And I hate it that you don't feel like The UK is your home. I really hope you stay here. But you know what? I will follow you both, wherever you lay your hats. ❤❤❤❤🎶🎼🎶🫂
Great reaction, it was spot on. This was the last song of a fantastic rock opera Quadrophenia. Your next stop should be one of the first songs"The Real Me".
This song is the climax of the bands second rock opera, Quadrophenia. The story of Jimmy, an English teenager in the early '60's with multiple personality syndrome (4 to be exact).
Bought this LP the week is came out. This song is a real classic Roger has absolute fantastic voice here. Many have made covers but nothing can compare to this. QuadrophenIa is a magnificent album, also the movie. I became a fan after seeing them live in Felixstowe on the pier I suppose is call the ballroom that was in 1966.
The album Quadrophenia tells a persons story in music. After the “rock opera” Tommy, this was the Who’s second foray into this kind of musical storytelling. The whole double album is an incredible musical expression, worthy of a listen.
Lovely reaction. It's an amazing song that I grew up with. It's touching to see you two, coming from a country (Romania?) that perhaps didn't have access to this kind of music, discovering it as fresh as ever.
"Quadrophenia" is considered one of The Who's greatest works and is often regarded as one of the greatest concept albums of all time. It showcases their musical prowess and Pete Townshend's storytelling abilities through its intricate compositions and thematic depth. Among the other highlights are "The Real Me," "5:15," "The Punk and The Godfather," and the instrumental title track.
A great song on its own and also a great song in context with its album. I'm not so sure that they were ahead of their times, but they built on what they had done before (and they were always creative) and so there is a definite arc from their past to this and that's why it is so fully realized and complex.
Reign:To reign like a King has power over you,the rain is falling over you and is similar to having a power over you….you can’t stop the rain and you can’t stop Love.
This is one of the featured title tracks from their acclaimed album Quadrophenia, a storied sogbook of an album from the film Quadrophenia (worth a watch)
The perfect way to listen to this song is to listen to the sequence "Doctor Jimmy - The Rock - Love Reign O'we Me" which form an interconnected piece on side 4 of the album "Quadrophenia".
I've seen them do this song 3 times, all of them after they were about 60 years of age or older and brought my wife and kids to the shows. This was so incredible, you have no idea. This got a standing ovation that lasted for minutes each time. The audience practically could not stop giving their appreciation. Utterly beautiful.
When I was a kid I used to go to sleep wearing headphones listening to the Quadrophenia album on the turntable next to my bed. I'd wake up with the headphone cord twisted around my neck.
