Each member of the Who was completely necessary to the function of the whole from 71-74. Each member was at the top of their game. It was a remarkable period for them and for rock. Won't Get Fooled Again is my all-time favorite rock song. Period. As relevant today as 50 years ago.

Seeing them do this live at the Fillmore West in San Francisco was awesome. Keith Moon was one of the greatest drummers I've ever seen.... and Pete with his windmill arm action and Roger twirling the microphone over his head like a lasso while John stood stoically at the side casually playing the bass. They were so much fun to see live.

Keith Moon is still the king ,RIP. John Entwhisle, RIP, the Who's unsung hero. This song is so pleasantly weird, never gets old, the weird keyboards turn it from good to great. Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey, on the mark as always. Epic. Kel's joy in hearing it for first time was amazing. Her recollection of religious people saying rock was " Satanic Music", rings true, I was in a church like that myself, once upon a time. It isn't the music style that causes " sin ", it is what is in the heart, as experience taught me later. Rock on!

A fellow Canadian here Kel...I was allowed to listen to these bands although my parents absolutely HATED them. My older brother wanted to go to Woodstock, but as he was 17 they didn't let him go. Quick story about this song. In grade 9 I had a young English teacher and one of our projects was to analyze the lyrics to a favourite song. I chose this one. As lyrics weren't readily available in those days, my mother and I listened to this song and she marked them down in shorthand and then put them into long hand for me. As she detested every minute of the music, it just shows her love for her son. RIP Mom.

I also love Pete’s guitar tone on this and subsequent Who recordings. While he used a Gibson Les Paul live during that period, in the studio he used a Gretsch Chet Akins Country Gentleman guitar, paired with an optical volume pedal and a Fender 5E7 Bandmaster amplifier. I suggest looking up the isolated guitar track and you can listen to Pete really shred. Also check out the TV series Classic Albums. They featured Who’s Next and it’s interesting to hear the demo Pete made for this song. It was very basic drums, bass and vocals, but it laid out his vision for it. Then, the individual members of the band took their parts and made them their own. It’s a great arrangement- no one trying to be flashier than the others, but each shining equally.

I’m 42. The first time I remember hearing this song I was in high school in 1992 and it was on the radio..... I remember feeling like I could run through a brick wall after hearing it! I‘ve since seen The Who live in Cleveland twice, in 1996 for their Quadrophenia tour and in 2000 for their From The Bush To The World tour. Both times with original bassist John Entwistle before he sadly passed away in 2002, and with still current drummer Zack Starkey, Ringo Starr’s son. To have seen them play Won’t Get Fooled Again live was a lifelong memory I will cherish forever. If you can find it on the internet (it’s hard to find online because the publishing company takes it down whenever it pops up), or if you just buy the Concert for New York City from October 2001 (benefit for the 9/11 first responders) The Who tore the house down. They owned it, with WGFA. It was an almost 5 hour concert with every living past and present rock and pop icon from McCartney to Billy Joel to Micj Jagger and Keith Richards, and The Who fucking owned it!! Must watch!!

When I saw them live in the early 80s, the part at 7:50 was accompanied by a beautiful film on the big screen comprised of a montage of photographs of each original band member from infancy to the present and also the evolution and history of the band. When the drums return, the image dissolved from Keith Moon to the present drummer Kenny Jones and then we saw his life in pictures up until he joined the band. It was an incredible, emotional moment. This Who performance video contains the film interlude at 6: 35. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X0Sd18NzYck.html

That lead up to the Daltrey scream, especially the 3 fills by Keith Moon, is one of the most impactful of the rock era. Intuitively, I knew from the first listen in the 70s, that this song was neither nihilistic nor ideological. The Daltrey scream brings out my own, though silent, a primal scream that demands freedom and celebrates life and strength.

Kel, your parents missed the fact (regarding rock being "the devil's music") that the classical composer Franz Liszt was actually the first rockstar. ;) The female audience used to faint when he played his concerts. @darryltinney5142
@darryltinney5142 4 года назад
The song is basically about a family man who just wants to live his life and be a family man. These people keep coming to him saying man you have to join us! You have to join the resistance. But he is older now and knows he has been told this before. He doesn't want to fight. He just wants to live in peace. Musically the song has a war going on in the background between two sides represented by the drums and the organ. If you listen to the instrumental before the synth break you hear the drums battling with the synth. Eventually the drums give way to the monotony of the synth. The drums fall away in exhaustion. There is a period of peace with the synth in control. The drums battle back and frustration scream is the realization that the New Boss is the same as the old boss. I look at the drums as conflict and the synth as "peace" or the time in between conflict or elections. The Real Me off of Quadrophenia I think you would like a lot.

HUUUUUGE fan of The Who. The Ox is one of my favorite bassists, and one of reasons I became a bassist ( The Real Me and Eminence Front were my catalyst). I waited 30 years to get an Alembic bass( used) because of John Entwistle.

Great reaction, especially for the last YEAAH!!!!. I think we were waiting for Kel's reaction to it as much as Rich was.
