That's a reason that Roger said, he had to be part of the visual and sonic purpose - swinging his mike and catching it, his powerful voice. Pete was jumping and swinging, and rocking. Keith would pound, and jest, and drive the sound. John stood, yet his Bass was like a Jet-plane in sound, with his quick fingers. I only saw The Who once, the Quadrophenia tour, in Chicago, October 1996 -awesome, yet have many filmed concerts on disc, and all albums - my 2nd favorite Rock Band.
@@jonathanmurphy3141 saw that concert at the UC! Wished Townsend play electric that acoustic tho but they were great as usual even Townsend on acoustic u can’t beat their energy in concert!!
Not my favourite band! but this is the track of rock and roll!I mean this is rock and roll 🤙 any one asked? just say young man's blues!!!end of.back.back.back
This is one of the most intense explosive and totally kick-ass live rock performances ever captured on film. I didn't realize that The Who rocked this hard until I watched this.
Live at leeds, 50 today... immerse yourself in the full album, its shattering! Closest thing on video is Live at Coloseum 1969, search for that and play it so loud your neighbours leave the house! 😀
@@sinistregoth this literally happened to me once I was playing Lat L cranked in my well insulated shop one evening. I turned see my neighbor banging on my window. " Would you please turn it down, I can hear it in my living room!" Lol
This is the reason The Who is the greatest rock band ever: I believe no other musicians have inspired more people to pick up instruments than Pete, John, Keith and Roger
Truth. And if you ask me, the Who I came to know and loved ceased to exist when Keith Moon died. Kenny Jones did all right, but the manic energy just wasn’t there. And he died on my 17th birthday. That sucked out loud.
Roger Daltrey, the greatest voice in rock. A friend of mine and I had an argument about the best voice in rock and I told him to listen to this song, and he said okay, you're right!
This is the definition of about 6 minutes of pure unadulterated rock the way it was meant to be with each member at the top of his game and rare instance where Pete's lead is as audible as the Ox's bass. Very few bands w/ just 4 members have produced such a barrage of melodic sonic output considering it was at the early era of heavy rock. Would have loved to be enlightened to these boys when i was in kindergarden at the time.
I watch this a lot. I can honestly say The Who in their prime was the toughest band on the planet. Roger can beat up a bear & maybe a gorilla. Pure energy & a pure powerhouse group!
still are fernander they don't make them like them anymore they were and are supreme I'm still a massive fan after more than fifty years I say LONG LIVE THE WHO
That amazing climactic bit of playing about 3.45mins in when Pete just let's the guitar do it's own thing and he just rides that sonic storm and then he thrashes it with those incredible windmill swipes...John's bass is like a fucking massive shifting soundscape... and Moonie is incredible as always but what chutzpah to squeeze in so much stick juggling whilst playing at full pelt.
@@antoniozuquete5068 makes sense though because John is aloof (air) and Pete as the songwriter is the band’s foundation so to speak, but I can see John also being earth bc the bass is musical foundation
Keith is like a bit jet airplane taking off here, they are all in top form. Great song, whole show is on fire, nothing like it really. Saw this tour about a month before at Tanglewood, Lenox, MA, USA (July 7th), that performance is also on RU-vid and worth checking out. Pete said it was his favorite live performance of Tommy. I was 14 years old and in the 3rd row center, made a huge impression! Had seen them the previous summer there as well, just before Woodstock, but the 1970 tour was really quite the thing.
The absolute definition of a 'powerhouse performance'! Four monster musicians that found each other at the right time, man those guys could blast it out! Back in their time The Who were also the loudest band on the planet live, no joke. ( lol @24 butthurt Foo Fighter fans )
Keith and Pete are constantly checking each other to see where they are going You would have thought Keith and John, but, it's John running this performance. pete always said, didn't matter what I did John matched it, reigned it in, then blasted it back better. He fuckin' did.
Many like to put Live at Leeds at the pinnacle of Who performances, and yes, it is absolutely fantastic,,,,but this show is fucking brilliant. The whole band is at its Zenith here, and I personally like Daltry's vocals better here than Leeds. Moon is at the peak of power and pizzazz during this show and can simply do no wrong. I can watch this entire show (I have it on DVD) a million times and never get bored. Man! If only I could have been there!
As a teenager I had cheap Les Paul copy and took a chunk out of my hand on the bridge while attempting to windmill. I broke the switch like that too. Some time later I was messing about throwing and spinning it in the air but caught it wrong and found a machine head had buried itself into my arm. At that point I decided I should probably leave the acrobatics to Pete Townshend...
watch a legendary band in action I would show this to all the up and coming bands to learn how to entertain with power and talent they don't come any better than THE WHO long live rock they said.
The Who will go down in history as the worlds best original rock and roll band of all times! Congratulations to Pete Townsend, Keith Moon, Bill Entwistle and Roger Daltry.
I saw him play in Vancouver, BC a few nights after that happened. He had a huge bandage on his hand and he still played like a demon. The performance in this video reminds me of exactly why I enjoy the Who so much. Every one of them personifies fearlessness, passion, creativity, and talent. Without the trail these cats blazed there would be no Led Zeppelin.
The who transporting the isle of wight to a parallel universe,if you are going to play live with such power and ease this is surely the way to perform,a truly stellar performance
I got to see The Who in Chicago 2 months before this concert and it was just like this concert. I always likened it to the Bose commercial with the guy laid back in the Lazy Boy chair and his hair blowing straight backward. Beautiful, beautiful noise!!!
