I still find it difficult to believe this classic movie is 50 years old. Timeless masterpiece wonderfully restored in 4K :-)

Great essay. I'm glad she cites the genre of "folk horror," which all the other reviewers consistently miss. Folk horror dips into profound fears we had long since forgotten we still have, including the haunting terror of human sacrifice.

Interesting essay - I think the Willow character (played beautifully by Britt Ekland) is a representation of Mother Earth and the comment about willow at 6:30 misses the point - yes she is trying to seduce him but not to tempt him in a shallow sense but to save him from his fate -no longer a virgin and therefore no longer able to be a sacrifice thereby reinforcing the goddess and in direct opposition to summerisle - juxtaposing the “good” and “evil” of the film

That's a really interesting insight! Personally, and as stated, I've always read Willow's attempted seduction as an test of Sgt. Howie's 'worthiness' of sacrifice - and not in a shallow sense but as an ultimate decider of his resolve. That him being able to repel her advances is ultimately and unfortunately what doomed him. I like the idea of her being in opposition to Summerisle though. It's food for thought!

@@VideoNastyPresents thank you - I think it’s probably part of the magic of the film that we all see things in a different way and it makes for an interesting discussion piece - I guess I’ve always seen Willow as the good on the island even tho she is part of the plan because if Howie had partaken shall we say then it would’ve changed the whole execution of the plan - that’s my take anyhow

Ah, but would the islanders have just let Sgt Howie fly home and file his report after all he had seen? After all, he was apparently the first policeman on the island in generations, and the legal violations are extreme, including rampant child sexual abuse (e.g., Willow's gig as a debaucher of underage boys, and that's probably only the beginning). I suspect Howie was doomed one way or another the moment his plane touched down in the harbour.

were you as impressed by DON'T LOOK NOW if youve seen it (released as a double bill with THE WICKER MAN in 1973) I know its not to do with Paganism & sacrifice, but it is equally as impressive in it's own way, I would have loved to have seen them together at the time, And they are both Art house cult classics
