Today Cool Classics looks at the wild and amazing career and comeback of Larry Hagman. From having early success on I Dream Of Jeannie with Barbara Eden, to his wild Hollywood Parties with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson, to being typecast and looking for work, to get a role on the TV Show Dallas and making his character JR Ewing so popular that it catapulted Larry to becoming the most famous Male Actor in America during the early 1980's. What a wild ride! You will enjoy this :)

I worked for a small company in the 80’s & nobody went out barhopping on “Dallas night”! Everyone rushed home to watch ! It wasn’t just a show, Dallas was an event!!

A childhood memory of mine was while on holiday in Spain, we were walking around the streets of a town one evening and all the folks were sitting outside their houses on the cool street watching Dallas on TV through their lounge windows. And of course it was all dubbed into Spanish. JR had a very deep voice :)

The zany chaos of I Dream of Jeannie was in another comic league from the sterile Bewitched, mostly because of the talent of its 3 stars. Before Dallas, Hagman made a TV mòvie of a Texas high school footba😊ll coach, which earned him rave reviews. That probably played a big role in his Dallas comeback opportunity.

"Who shot JR" rang out all throughout my elementary school in Houston, TX, so it definitely wasn't just a small town thing. You count off your fingers while saying it and lower one finger into your fist on the R and repeat it until you're left with your hand forming a gun. It was quite the joke you'd play on other kids, leaving the killer with the gun in his hand. LOL

In the early 2000's Larry lived in a house in the mountains between Santa Paula and Ojai in Ventura County. I attended a fundraiser for a County Board of Supervisor candidate held at Larry's house. He had built a beautiful house, part of the roof opened so you could look at the stars at night. Larry came out and introduced the candidate and then spent the rest of the day in his den watching television (which I would rather have been doing myself.)
