This 1964 film "The Wildest Ride" is about the land speed records set in 1964 in Utah is presented by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and Shell. It opens October 5, 1964 at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The Wingfoot Express, Tom Green its driver, is shown going 413.20 mph. Two days later, Art Arfons tops that at 434.02 mph in the Green Monster. The parachute deploys behind the speed record words (:09-:42). September 5, 1963, the Spirit of America is pulled onto the flats. A Shell truck fuels it. Craig Breedlove is shown seated wearing his helmet and mask. The roof is placed over him and the vehicle panned. (:43-1:50). A group of men perform maintenance on various parts of the vehicle (1:51-2:25). The jet engine is seen up close, fired, and the vehicle takes off, kicking a layer of salt at the camera. Multiple angles are shown before the parachute is deployed. Breedlove is congratulated and lifted into the air (2:26-3:42). A blade scrapes the salt bed. Breedlove squats and feels the ground (3:43-4:04). Breedlove, in the vehicle, talks to a man whose jacket back says “Craig Breedlove Spirit of America 428.37 MPH World Record Holder”. The mask is hooked and roof secured. Multiple race angles are shown, including from Breedlove’s perspective and a side-mounted camera. The parachute is shown dragging behind. Craig gets out (4:05-6:30). The vehicle is moved into position on October 15, 1964. His shoes are wiped off before getting in the cockpit. The vehicle takes off and is shown from multiple angles, including Breedlove’s and a mounted side camera. A line indicates the vehicle’s desired path. The record-breaking speed of 525.277 mph is shown. The aftermath wreckage is also shown. Failed parachute brakes caused a five-mile skid (Guinness Book of World Records for longest skid marks), after which the vehicle crashed through telephone poles and ended up in a brine pond with just the rear visible. The support vehicles rush to the scene. A close-up of the flag still out of the water is shown. A garrulous Breedlove, who has just miraculously escaped injury or death, is shown smiling, a gash on his forehead. He is hugged by several men (including his father). All are relieved that he is okay, and Breedlove discusses the adventure with them and reporters (6:32-11:53). The group of men are shown loaded into the back of a “Property of State of Utah” truck, which drives through a wet salt bed (11:54-12:18). Men in hard hats and tall boots carry rope to the Spirit of America, still mired in the water. A crane is also shown. Breedlove sits on part of the vehicle that is still out of the water, rubbing it affectionately. (12:19-12:48). The crane top is shown, followed by the line down to the hook lifting Spirit up and completely free. The vehicle is shown on a trailer being towed (12:49-13:30). [This version of Spirit of America was taken to Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry and a new version, the Sonic 1, built in its place.]

jonpardue. I’m writing this in July 2023. I didn’t realize he had passed away a few months ago. I remember watching his feats when I was about six or seven years old in the mid 1960s. It’s interesting to think that his speed records were 60 years ago! RIP, Craig Breedlove.

I was in junior high and high school in the 60's when Breedlove and the Arfons brothers were trading the LSR record weekly (if not daily). My first free period every day I headed to the library to scour the newspapers (remember them?) for news from Bonneville. Until I moved recently I had a big manila envelope full of clippings from those heady days. RIP Craig, and a big thank you for the memories.

Awesome film! Grew up outside of Chicago, so I saw The Spirit of America many times at the Museum of Science and Industry. The last time i saw her was about 10 years ago before Craig got her back. I was disgusted how much damage the car had received on display. It was sitting on the main floor, and had graffiti scratched in the paint all over it. You could tell the Museum didn't care about it anymore. So glad he sued them for damages and won. Such a disrespectful disregard of the historical significance of his achievements.

Interestingly although Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co was involved in the wheels, the Aerospace division was not at the time. When he shredded the parachutes (and crashed) they turned to the Aerospace folks to take a look at the film and being knowledgeable about high speed breaking parachute/ballutes, knew exactly what went wrong and how to fix. On the "Spirit of America - Sonic 1" it was corrected.

I watched this on Wild World of Sports in 1964, as a 5 year old growing up in New Hampshire. Never did I dream that Craig would become and remains a dear friend. The car was repaired and his plan was to run it again in 1965, until funding for his second car (Sonic 1) came through. It is sad how this car was put on unspecified temporary loan to the Chicago Museam, it was supposed to be 3 months, and for 50 years he was unable to get it back. When he did get it back, it had been cut into several pieces and many parts were missing. ( engine, seat , front suspension. ) I worked on his 3rd jet car The Sonic Arrow in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, when he was trying for the sound barrier. Today, the original Spirit Of American sits in the back of his shop in pieces. He tried to recoup damages from the Chicago Museam of Science and Industry, but to date has not received anything. I have offered to help him put it back together on a volunteer basis . I can’t understand how the Peterson Museam or even the Smithsonian is not interested in this piece of automotive history that Brian Wilson called “The King of all Cars”.

My god this is such a gorgeous car. I was far too young to follow LSR racing at this time but have been interested in and followed it since the mid 70s. One day I'll make it to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago to see it. But the "privateer" campaigns of the 60s will never be beaten in terms of innovation and head to head competition. Oh if only Breedlove had not had that wind speed mis-communication in his Sonic Arrow and damaged it at Black Rock In 1997 during his "showdown" with Green. He would have undoubtedly been the first driver through the sound barrier and by a whole lot more than the .02M that the Thrust SSC did had that not happened.

I remember when these runs of Craig Breedlove and Mickey Thompson were happening and reading about them in the paper and magazines. At the time, I thought it would be great to go to Bonneville, but I never did, just like many never get where they wish for. Of course, speeds got so high that nothing I owned would ever have been competitive enough to spend the money and effort by the time I was old enough and had any money. Incredibly, 15 years after this run, Stanley Barrett would go about 200 mph faster and break the sound barrier on the ground. 9:28 - Great looking four door hardtop '64 Chevy.

He set a weird world record (longest skid marks, over 6 miles) in that wild ride. He goes on, building another Spirit of America with a J79 modified to run unleaded and sets 675MPH but crashes. Later, ThrustSSC sets the bar with it's record-setting 763 MPH
@68Jaguar420G
@68Jaguar420G Год назад
Don't know where you got those ideas about the J79 or Spirit Of America, Sonic 1s records. Converting a J79 to "unleaded" gas makes no sense whatsoever and I can quite categorically say it didn't happen. Sonic 1's best record was 600.601 mph. That made Breedlove first through the 400, 500 and 600 mph milestones in non-wheel driven LSR cars.

@@Nighthawke70 OK, so I searched around the internet a bit today and couldn't find any articles about converting the J79 to run on unleaded gas. I also rewatched the Scarf and Goggles RU-vid channel video on the Sonic Arrow. Turns out you are right, the engines used in that project were modified to run on unleaded gas. But it wasn't a technical issue to produce more power but rather public relations to run Shell unleaded gas as Shell was the primary sponsor as they had been on his previous cars. An unsupported line in the Wiki article is not something I bought, Scarf and Goggles however is a good source for all things LSR. Do yourself a favour and take some time to watch his videos. They are very well researched and presented, agreeing with reliable long published books and articles.

There is no imaginable tire which could transmit the power to the salt required to achieve that speed, regardless of the power source. Similarly, aircraft, regardless or the source of power, are not capable of spinning a propeller such as to approach the speed of turbine-powers aircraft.

People are going to hate the comment (personally I'm all for the LSR so bloodhound/Thrust SSC is all good), but thats literally why there are categories for LSR and drag week etc. If you think carbon fibre pro mods arent a "street car" fine then look at ultimate iron or gasser or whatever. -Anything with 4 wheels that steers with 2 (I.e a "car" from the word carraige or cart as in used to transport people or goods): Thrust SSC with Andy Green (uk) at 760.343 Mph. -If you think jet engine isn't the LSR fine then look at wheel driven: Donald Campbell (uk) in Bluebird CN7 at 403mph in 1964 -If you think it has to be wheel driven AND piston powered: John Cobb (uk) in Railton Mobil special at 394.196mph in 1947.

@68Jaguar420G
@68Jaguar420G Год назад
@@tomstech4390 Certainly many classes for records but for the LSR most look at "unlimiteds" so thrust driven from jet engines is the current formula, granted with rocket assist such as the I'll fated Budwieser Eagle and that damned leviathan the Bloodhound. Bluebird CN7 was a gas turbine so kind of a hybrid wheel driven with residual exhaust thrust. Some have estimated 20% of the tractive effect came from exhaust thrust but there is no absolute measurement. I think the only thing we can say with any certainty is that Bluebird would have been slower had the exhaust not been directed directly astern. Wheel driven and piston engined record was owned by the Summers brother in Goldenrod at 409.986 mph for many years. It has since been surpassed but the number of classes, supercharged, etc have watered down the impact in my opinion.
