My thoughts . Am aerodynamic wonder.. I'm assuming maybe they don't need as much final gear ratio as they think
@MrCarnutbill67
@MrCarnutbill67 2 года назад
To all the people saying the speeds aren’t that impressive, you know they’re driving on salt right? Not pavement, not concrete but salt. Not a solid sheet of rock salt but like coarse table salt. Let that marinate for a minute.
@tomeighty
@tomeighty 2 года назад
I think some people have it stuck in there heads that they are still running jet engines or rockets out there and hitting the old speed records. And also you are right about the salt, it is as close to being on snow as you can imagine. You can't give it much throttle till you are going over 100 mph or so.
@jfv65
@jfv65 2 года назад
I think it's lame they need a push from a smoke belching polluting diesel truck. Furthermore, at this point in time this sport is purely for entertainment purposes. Everything about ICE's is well established knowledge/technology. Same can be said for aerodynamics. They should do this with EV's, battery class and a fuel-cell class. Maybe that would help advance that technology?
@MrCarnutbill67
@MrCarnutbill67 2 года назад
@@jfv65 They have those classes as well. 99% of racing is for entertainment. Very very few can do it for a living. As far as having aerodynamics "figured out" most of these vehicles are home built. Very few teams have access or the money for wind tunnel testing. They also only race a couple times a year. Check out the Buckeye Bullet built by students at The Ohio State University if ur interested in EV land speed racing.

Hey on a side note did you ever do a paint job on a custom van or do pin striping on one? I've been binge watching old school van walk through videos and loving them. Thanks for watching buddy. The event is really complicated, there is a zillion different classes of racers and a zillion different ways to get in the record books. All the easy records have been crushed long time ago, you need to find a unique one to go for a record now a days. This looks like so much fun to be able to see them go that fast. . NO WRECKS PLEASE . They are so nice , clean,aerodynamic. Wonder what they look like after the go that fast. Salt must get into the smallest things. I wonder if the intake gets it in it also?

Yes they get blasted with salt big time. Even GoPro cameras will start getting a build up on them. I guess that is one thing that makes it unique racing here. Thank you so much for watching my video 👍

Hope my question isn't so stupid. I like that stuff . Seen so many videos . But wonder every time how that salt can be so smooth? Do they prepare it like scrape it before they go out . Or use some sort of machine to get it straight ?

@tomeighty 2 года назад
Great question. They actually start a week ahead of time if the water has fully left the track and looks like the races will go off. And they use a large piece of steel square stock that might be weighted down and they drag it back and forth with a truck and knock the pointed head off of the salt to smooth it out. It takes a few passes from what I have heard and it comes out pretty flat. One thing they also have to look for is soft spots in the salt where there is a pocket of water underneath it. The salt kind of becomes like sand then and is spongy like. And that is now good, it will spin cars out. Thanks for watching Roger!

I hope a major production company produces a Bonneville Speed Week feature. With proper speed matching panning cameras start/during/end of run. There is clearly massive interest in this event, it just needs someone to come and film it and put it together. @Netflix maybe?

It's tough setting up out on the Salt Flats when it is 110 degrees out there. And the cars do not really run one after the other, there is a lot of delays and such. And the panning of video on the Salt Flats is super tough because everything looks white in the camera lens and they are going so fast it is hard to keep up with them. So when I nail one, I get really happy. Ha ha. Thanks for watching and be sure to keep an eye out for the next video coming out in a few weeks. Speed Week starts on Aug 5th.

@@tomeighty Exactly. It needs professional gear with people who know what they're doing (no offence). A proper production. Filming, editing, script writing, interviews, telemetry etc.

I would definitely like to know what the classes are and possibly in what class each car is running. When you see a car set a record at 200 mph and a similar looking car not set a record at 400 mph, it gets a bit confusing.
@47485ksc
@47485ksc 2 года назад
The classes can be seen on each vehicle, usually above or below the vehicle's number. Example @ 14.19: D/GL.

@@47485ksc That’s true, but I don’t know what the differences between the classes are, or what the letters mean.

@@brucecoleman7412 If it's anything like drag racing, one part of those letters is the powerplant type, and the other part is the chassis type. I agree though it would be nice to see that info written out on screen. When they show the car name and speed attained, show some of the class info too

@@brucecoleman7412 I'll take some wild guesses here: "A" may mean "Alcohol fueled", "S" may mean "Streamlined" but there's just so many different classes, it's hard to guess. I tried searching: "Bonneville Classes" but got no results. Any Bonneville speedsters here know?

Thank you! And yes I was staying over on the big track most of the time and missed out on the short track action. That's awesome the Ghia broke a record. That is really moving at 169 mph!

The long rail style cars are basically top fuel dragster bodies. It seems someone would install a slightly detuned top fuel engine and maybe reach over 1,000mph.
