His Licanius trilogy showed he’s great at creating a complex plot with threads woven throughout and big payoffs. It makes me excited for what he’s gonna do here!
Finished this book just yesterday. I agree that it has flaws, and agree that a lot of them are character driven, but I think it excels in many areas a first fantasy book usually falls short (pacing). I think book 2 is pivotal to the overall success of the series similar to red rising. Book 1 sets the scene, but book 2 will really begin the story.
Oh yea, I didn’t really get that vibe from Vis, he kept saying he just wanted to avoid ceding Will but yea idk 🤷♂️ still love the book and am keen for the next
I loved this book.. it was a 5* for me... I don't disagree with your point about Vis, but I didn't feel that it impacted my feeling for the book.. I was along for the ride and completely hooked. Very much looking forward to the sequel.. Good to see some Aussies releasing bangers in the faantasy genre lately with Islington and Kristoff..
I also thought this was a 3.5/4 star book for me. I think it suffered because of the red rising similarities and I had just done a full reread of that series. Also the larger mystery never quite clicked with me. I’m curious if I like the second book better and it just vibes with me better.
I feel the same, I felt like he had an idea for what he wanted the second book to be so he had to force a few things in this one to get the story to be where he wanted it for the next book
