Based on The True Story of Kaluaikoolau: As Told By His Wife Piilani, The Wind & The Reckoning brings to life the story of a legendary Hawaiian hero. Koʻolau (Jason Scott Lee) contracts leprosy and vows to never be separated from his family and taken to the leper colony by sheriff McCabe (Henry Ian Cusick) and the Provisional Government. This feature film is a treat as it is mostly told in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, the original language of the Kanaka Maoli.
The 39th Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival is delighted to screen The Wind and The Reckoning on May 11th at REGAL LA LIVE. For more information, visit festival.vcmedia.org.

Pi'ilani wrote her memoir in Hawaiian and only in the last 2 years has it been translated into English. I can't wait to see this film, but it has to get distributed. I am not Hawaiian, but I have studied Hawaiian history, been to Kalaupapa, read a great deal of stories from survivors and it does not bother me one bit to have the language in other than English. Dark Wind is presently running on AMC+ and is partially in the Dine language and it is starting it's second season. Nobody cares if it isn't in english. Grow up, Hollywood. We want to see these stories. The main point about Ko'olau the Leper's story is that it takes place in 1893, the year Hawaii was stolen by the Missionaries and the queen imprisoned in her palace. Anyone who had ashy skin was assumed to have Leprosy & was taken to Kalaupapa, thrown into the sea to swim or drown with what little they brought with them. There were no provisions to take care of them & should anyone give birth while there, the newborns were taken up the Pali to be given to others at the top to raise. They had 16 days to make this film they had language masters including the boy who plays the son. He is a graduate of the language immersion schools and is fluent in Hawaiian.
