Well studio ghibli really out did itself on that one. FR tho this video is so good that you make me ques my romantic sensibilities, if you know what I mean. And what I mean is that you are fucking hilarious ♥. 530 km/hr. That's not the speed of zero its my heart rate. Max operational height or ceiling was 13,000 feet.
@@russellfairman1959 i might be wrong but I'm pretty sure i heard it somewhere that energies and atoms can be created but can't be destroyed, it just changes forms
Well yeah, it's never implied that the laws of thermodynamics are broken. When you die, as far as I can tell, you (as a conscious mind) cease to exist.
I mean, you don't remember anything of your existence before birth. Death may just be the same. Even after your brain stops working and your heart stops beating the cells in your body still wanna keep going, that's their function. As the Sands of time turns you into dust the small specks of individuality dissappear, and the atoms of your body are spread on the many nature cycles life has to offer. People may never agree on what lays after the end of a trip, but most should agree that this might be it, and everyone wants a good trip on their own terms. One day I will be one, once a real guy. Because even if I stop existing, the memories and impact in this world would cast my deceased shadow. A guy, but not a real one.
The Wind Rises is my fav of all time. That's because of a simple reason I kinda love engineering and tech and I've never watched a movie that captures the true spirit of a real engineer and of engineering. Somehow Miyazaki did it and I hav eternal respect for him for doing so.
This is long but I need to say this: I have a great respect for you now that you have actually discussed "The Wind Rises" and the qualities that went into the movie. It is a very moving and each scene is filled with passion to express the life of Jirō and is impact on Japan and the wars and conflict that came to it. And yes, the atmosphere of the movie is a huge part of it. Studio Ghibli has always had a talent of showing the life of the characters in the movies' stories in moments that are still and lacking the main character, I mean, just look at any moment of "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" or "Arietty" or "The Cat Returns" or "Kiki's Delivery Service". They do an outstanding job of capturing what life was like without the main character in the frame in the scenes of the movie, yet still shows how that life would have affected the main character and the characters' overall parts in that life. The work of Studio Ghibli is just phenomenal and moving in all the aspects that go into making the films, and I really wish people actually paid attention to those details, especially in the films that aren't as known like "When Marnie was There", "From Up on Poppy Hill", "Porco Rosso", and the ones I mentioned up above. And bless you for having "Bygone Days" from Porco Rosso play at the end of this video. It's one my favorite songs to ever come from Studio Ghibli, and one of the most emotional ones when you know what it means when it plays. Honestly though, I am really worried about Miyazaki's health failing, but I know that the studio will carry on good with his memory in their mind. Anyways thanks for this video zarky! We really do need more people to talk about the lesser known and or lesser appreciated Studio Ghibli films! (●´ω`●)❤ Oh and ps: if "The Wind Rises" made you cry, try watching "Grave of The Fireflies". I think it is the most emotional and painful Studio Ghibli movie to be produced, simply because of the story and grim meaning that the movie is filled to the brim with. ❤❤
I grew up watching the popular Ghibli films like spirited away and KiKi’s Delivery Service but I recently started watching more such as from up on poppy hill and the wind rises and I now I have ascended.
Wind rise: well its studio Ghibli film what you think? Of course it's a good movie? Are you stupid? ITS PURE GOLD Frozen: well its Disney movie, what do you think? Do you think that it's, a good movie? No. It's first movie that let me think that "man, so movies can be bad huh?". Well it's not the worst movie I have watched, but it's so mediocre and have too many ok songs.
Aah I love listening to people talking passionately about something like this. The Wind Rises is quite a phenomenal film, yes. When I saw it in theaters I was already like past my most painful years of _Weltschmerz_ and hardened my shell from world-weariness and my worst existential crises into cozy apathy and escapism of young adulthood ... I can't quite imagine how much it must have really touched you zark, you sweet young boi. Oh hey, reminds me, have you guys seen the movie Click? So I went to watch a Sandler movie once because haa hah, idk man... but then, like, what even happened to me.... I...
The airplane sounds give a unique take on realism within the film. The whole thing was done with such care and precision, yet Miyazaki knew the unique and defining sounds of those airplanes couldnt be recreated to a standard he wanted. By forgoing foley work and museum field trips he gives a completly emotional description. As if a friend was describing the scene to you, full of sound effects and texture to let you live their moment.
Fun fact: Miyazaki's dad was the director for a company that manufactured parts for the zero planes, which is why Miyazaki loves planes so much. Also, this video is fantastic and its great to see appreciation for the less popular studio ghibli movies :)
I saw a post where somebody said that gibli movies look like how life feels, the tears look big and way heavier, the food looks fucken TASTY , the plants look greener, the wind looks softer, but not in a unrealistic way,in a way that makes us able to associate with the movies more, that makes us appreciate real life. They make the simplest things pretty and honestly, that's why I love them so much
Yo I watched this like. last week 😳 As a fellow animator, I have such a mad amount of respect for all of the animators who worked on this film, it’s really incredible
in my opinion, any ghibli movie has all of my respect, the animation, the ambiance, the storyline, the cold hard truth (in some of them), it mixes together perfectly. These are some of the many reasons I love ghibli movies, every film has life.
This is a great video. Very well done analysis and editing, and it’s funny too! I like how you point out the movie gives you a sense of the fragility of life. You pointed out how the airplanes are given human sound effects almost like they’re living people, and when we seen them destroyed multiple times in the movie, it helps symbolize the tragedy of lives lost during war. Throughout Miyazaki’s films, he uses flight to show both freedom and destruction. Nothing displays this theme better than the story of a great engineer making a beautiful, even living aircraft only for his creation to be pitted against other people. Still, he chose the “world with pyramids” as Caproni describes it, so he must embrace the fragility of life along with the cursed dream of the BIG AIRPLANE.
Fun fact: the word used to describe the atmosphere is 'Ma' which basically describes the lack of plot action in some scenes that allow the movie and audience to breathe
I feel like, by using human voice acting for the sound effects of planes, it gives them life and a sense of personal value. To the main character, planes are the main focus. To the director, planes are the main focus. Planes are practically a character, and it only makes sense to have a character voiced by a human, if not multiple in this case.
I’m glad someone loves this movie as much as I do. It’s helped to shape who I am as an artist. It’s what inspired me to work on a historical comic based on WW2.
I saw this with a friend a while back, whenever I go over to his place we have a little Ghibli marathon, and this one hit me WAY harder than I was expecting. It’s for sure one of my faves.
The Wind Rises is not only my favourite Ghibli movie but one of my favourite films of all time. I know not everyone will appreciate it the way I do, but it makes me really happy to see a video that shares that feeling and might draw more people to see this masterpiece.
Damn dude, I dunno if you've done essay's like this before, but it's the first of yours I've seen and it really hit the spot. You've got a bit of a dunkview thing going on, but its set apart by your personal connection to the film. Great stuff my man
This is my favorite Ghibli film of all time. It’s beautiful and so well structured that I could watch it over and over again. I tell all my friends to watch it when they ask Studio Ghibli and 100% of the time they’ve NEVER HEARD IF IT LIKE WHAT???
You’re the perfect kind of writer, you’ll describe something so important and fragile that will near bring me to glassy eyed tears and then slap me back with a “big airplane” and I’m okay again thank you so much
I am so glad someone has the ability to express the emotion i get from this film. I am aware it isn't perfect but to me this is the best Miyazaki film and will always hold a place in my heart. Keep up the great work and have a nice day.
It's always really nice to see and hear someone talk about something they are passionate about and that feeling is ever present in this video. Congratulations on the great video!
Woah dude! This is a really well made film review. I'm impressed by your analysis and how you present it to the audience in a way that's engaging and informative. You clearly know what you're talking about and adding your personal experience and how you feel about the movie just makes it so much more authentic and worthwhile to watch. I think I might have to watch The Wind Rises now because of you. Bravo!
Wow, these types of movie reviews are a breath of fresh air from the more intense comedy videos. Don't get me wrong the animation videos are great but I've always enjoyed seeing somebody's research and putting into a funny video which also teaches me something about the topic at hand and something unique. I would love to see more of these types of videos zark.
I remember watching this film at like 14 and crying my eyes out till like 4am. Was a massive formative part of my life to becoming the artist I am today.
Just watching the atmosphere and you describing it and talking about how you might have learned about love from the movie almost made ME cry man. This film is so good and I’m so glad you made this
this review is the BIG AIRPLANE of your channel my guy. Succint but meaningful, I love it. Can't wait for more in this vein. Really been loving this branch-out you been doing.
So, I just found your channel and, am going through your videos as I write this and I gotta say this video is so far my favorite. Now, I don't know anything about you besides the fact that you look like the secret love child of Ellen and the Green giant but, you put so much emotion and expression into how you talked about the film from the minute ( "my'nyou't ) details that so many people pass over, to the way you spoke about the juicy animation and even your analogy about the Foley work being done by VA's it was pure passion. My favorite parts were when you talked about Miyazaki's passion for Plane and you used the analogy about how it feels as if he's breathing his last breath into this movies as he becomes the planes and that hit me, hearing how this was meant as his last film, made me emotional but not sad, its almost beautiful how in the same way you describe him breathing his passion into those planes... in a way this movie is him breathing his last breath. Anyway long story short, I really liked this video, especially the bionicle reference, and I look forward to seeing what movie you talk about next. Ps I highly suggest the 90's berserk show, if not for the music alone.
I watched a lot of studio Ghibli as a kid, as I'm sure many did, but as I've gotten older and been able to get into art (particularly landscapes very similar to the ones in the movies) the amount of RESPECT i have for the talent and hard work that must have been put into these movies is ridiculous. I have to stop myself from screenshotting every frame as they're all so gorgeous.
The Wind Rises holds a very strange and particular place in my heart. Just yesterday I felt like listening to the soundtrack again, so uncanny timing there, but it was also the first one readily available on iTunes months before the movie released and I used to listen to it all the time in my freshman year of college. Speaking of which, this is the first instance I've felt genuinely "old" thinking that you could have been that young and watching this movie haha! When I borrowed this movie from a friend I bawled my eyes out, went out and bought it myself, then watched it again and sobbed again. The Wind Rises is a wonderful movie and I should really revisit it again soon. I'm glad I stumbled upon your video of it. ☺️
I remember watching this in the beginning of quarantine as my grandpa had it on hand and I hadn’t watched it and I remember being astounded with beauty. It’s gorgeous and it’s an amazing story and hit really good. An amazing film
Your channel really is a gem. Some of the greatest youtube comedy ive seen, as well as possibly one of the most indepth and descript video essays ive ever seen, and its only 8 minutes.
It's amazing how your channel is diversified, in fact your channel corresponds to me it has a humor that is in my opinion perfect and you speak of one of my favorite films, just thank you for making this magnificent film discover to someone who does not know would not be interesting in normal time
the wind rises was supposed to be hayao miyazaki's farewell to the fantastical and magical movies he made previously with ghibli. it was supposed to be his last film and he wanted it to convey the realities of war and love and whatnot. but being the way miya-san is he couldn't stay away from animation and is currently working on his next feature. bit of a side note, I highly recommend anyone interested in ghibli and animation in particular to read "starting point: 1979-1996", a book that compiles interviews, memoirs, essays, etc by hayao Miyazaki. i finished it the other day and it's spectacular to get a look inside the head of one of the greatest directors of our time (and it explains his obsession with airplanes which is adorable). also, superb video. looking forward to other stuff you cook up.
One of the bigger lessons in the wind rises is that no everything is one-sided The movies lesson is it’s like the comparison of a knife being used for good and being used to hurt someone it can be both it depends on what the people choose to use it for.
This and the castle in the sky film is what further embedded my love for aircraft. Also, the wind rises taught me to never give up to pursue what you love.
I love ALL of “Studio Ghibli’s” movies, there all so mesmerizing and INCREDIBLY ANIMATED, just TOO GOOD, I like to see other ppl enjoy it as much as I do ^-^
this and from up on poppy hill are my favorite ghibli movies because they're more realistic. like yeah howl is hot and totoro makes you want to cuddle your loved ones, but these movies make you experience real stories and inspire you to actually do something. i actually enjoy these kind of videos more than your other videos because i enjoy hearing someone else speak so passionately about something they love, especially someone who appreciates the beauty and animation of ghibli films. keep these up zark!
I dont want to talk about the movie itself because, although I really loved it, since I'm certainly the last person who can talk about movies on a technical level. All I wanted to say was that, I watched the wind arises for the first time with the person who I love the most, and I didn't realized how possibly a movie could vibrate with your soul, let you feel the same things that you feel every day in such an intense scale and make you realize how possibly lucky you are to have what you have until then. It really is my favorite movie from the studio Ghibli and probably one of the art works that most remain in my soul, and I really struggle to describe how I feel about it.
This movie really stuck out when I first watched in theaters. The pacing, the exaggeration, the sounds, the imagery; all these gave me a feeling that no other film had prior. And what sucked was no one else I knew that had watched it really resonated the way I did.
This movie was recommended to me by an old librarian at our local library. She said she loved the movie, and she let me borrow it. Boy, did that bloody scene shock me.. It was also really sad. Gorgeous, it really pulls you into the story.
I grew up watching Miyazaki and it is my biggest inspiration, but after Earwig and the Witch came out I felt a little upset and I thought Ghibli would never be the same. I also saw that people were saying Miyazaki’s films were weak and overrated, but you know that’s just not true. This video reminded me of what I love about these movies. I know his new films will be just as stunning. Thank you for opening up the light for me again.
My favorite video I've seen this week~ You're a first rate Ghibli fan, I like your spark! In all seriousness, The Wind Rises is my second favorite Ghibli film and I believe you did it justice. Mad respect for utilizing Breath of the Wild sounds. And I don't usually see this style of smash editing clips used so well. This was very nice, I like it! All that and a BIG AIRPLANE.
I got to see this movie during the beginning of a really hard period of my life (also I was in middle school too so yeaaaaaah). It was a shot of reality but not as bad as what my life was going through. It was more like it was saying "hey, life sucks but that doesn't mean you just always be sad about it. Enjoy what you can".
THANK YOU for talking about this movie. This is personally one of my favorite ghibli films, and despite some people saying that it's "boring" or "forgettable" I feel the complete opposite, even after all these years, I still remember the feeling this movie gave me. The ending, goddamn the ending, it really made my 10 year old self think lol. And yes, I 100% agree with you on the atmosphere of the movie, that shit is perfection itself. The Wind Rises will always hold a place in my heart; I really hope I can watch it again sometime. Edit: *b i g a i r p l a n e*
there's a studio like Studio Ghibli and coincidentally the one who made it was from Studio Ghibli. He was one of the successors of Hayao Miyazaki, probably responsible for the movies success. Studio Ponoc was the name, they produced Mary and the Witch's Flower, go watch it it's genuinely amazing.
The first time I watched this movie, I was quite young and I have continued to watch it time and time again. It was my favourite Studio Ghibli film for many years (until I watched Porco Rosso) and even still it holds a very special place in my heart. I honestly dont believe perfection exists, yet this film has me doubting that. Every. Single. Time. Thank you for making this lovely video!
I think the only thing I don’t like about this video is how you undermined the ending of the video with big airplane. I mean, I loved the Reggie video and thought the best thing about the ending was how you didn’t make a joke at the end and kept the emotion in it. You let us sit in our feelings, and I think that’s pretty cool.
Now i love movies that are realistic Like when im watching something and the voice lines dont sound scripted i feel so attached So the idea of this being as if its a real life sounds amazing Edit: okay im gonna watch the movie thanks for telling me about its existance 😄
Y'know what's another underrated Ghibli thing that isn't a movie but a video game but it's not developed by Ghibli but moreso animated the cutsenes? NI NO KUNI BABYYYYYYYY FREAKIN' GRAPHICS ARE LIKE STRAIGHT OUT OF A GHIBLI FILM FEELS LIKE YOURE PLAYIN' IT AND THE CUTSENES WHEN YOU GET THAT HAND DRAWN SHTUFF YOUR LIKE FRIK YEEEAHHHHH AND THE MUSIC IS JUST GLORIOUS THE CHARACTERS ARE GOOD VOICACTING PERFECT, SETTING CREATURES FANTASY BLOWS YOUR BALLS OFF- Play Ni No Kuni on switch or anywhere for that fact, and everything else that level 5 has okay byyyeeee-
im a little too sleepy to make a proper comment on this right now but I watched this when it came out and the use of human voices as sound effects was something that i never forgot, I thought it was so fucking cool
You so totally nailed this. I’m unable to figure out if my favorite movie of all time is Nausicaä of the Valley of the wind (because it’s great and also nostalgia) or the Wind Rises (because of EVERY SINGLE ELEMENT OF IT). Just watching this kinda made me tear up because of how powerful the movie is.
