This 7 day backpacking trip with my son started at the Big Sandy Lake Trail Head and followed Trail 099 to Big Sandy Lake and then Trail 098 up to Clear Lake. On day 3 we backtracked to Trail 099 and climbed over Jackass Pass down to Lonesome Lake in the Cirque of Towers. The next day we took an unofficial trail over Texas Pass and down to Billy's Lake, the third lake from Texas Pass. On day 5 we continue down Washakie Creek and then up to May's Lake on Trail 111. Next we go off trail over a small ridge and drop into the East Fork River drainage and downstream to the CDT, then go south on the CDT to Dad's Lake. Our final day we continue south on the CDT to Trail 099 and back to Big Sandy Trail Head.
Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video.

Beautiful country. My boyfriend and I camped at Big Sandy in October 2022 and day hiked from there. We were surprised to see as many backpackers as we did because night-time temps were in the 20s. Nice music choices in this video too. What's the song that starts at 6:50?

I loved seeing all the wildflowers along the trail, the lakes and the imposing mountains. Great trip Bryan! I've done most of your route but on different trips. About as good a place to backpack as anywhere in North America for sure. Expect you will have some more trips coming from this past August which was better than the past several years, less smoke, at least in WY where we were.
@BryanDeLay
@BryanDeLay Год назад
Thanks Will! This is a great loop and I've done it three times, except for the East Fork part. The Winds is my favorite place to backpack in the west; the reason I keep going back. There was no smoke this year with excellent views. After this trip I did a 5 day solo trip in the Winds, but didn't video the trip. I only video about 25% of my trips. Then I went down to Colorado and did a 6 day trip with David Knaus in Mt. Zirkel Wilderness and should have that video out in about 2 weeks. Watched your Snowy Range videos and it looks really nice. May have to check it out sometime.

@@BryanDeLay I was reading other comments and just wanted to say I do about the same thing as you. I try to give myself 6 weeks. I have a pick up with a small cap on the back. Built a platform bed and stow all my gear underneath. I "truck" camp all around WY, ID & MT and then take one or two backpacking trips from my different base camps. Sometimes I find such a nice camping spot that I stay for a week but only do day hikes and explore the area for future backpacking ideas. Honestly, when I look back, the most enjoyable moments for me are finding some very secluded boondocking spot way down a seldom used, rough forest service road, and just chilling out with the quiet solitude. If I feel compelled to do a 2-3 day backpacking exploration trip, great. If not, that's ok too! Love the Winds!......Tom
@BryanDeLay
@BryanDeLay Год назад
I get it Tom! Car camping is very enjoyable also. I'm driving a Jeep GC and put a Thule cargo box on the roof rack and put a Gazelle Gazebo G6 Deluxe in the box. Although it's a 6 sided gazebo with roll down sides, it's basically 10' x 10' and 7' tall. A queen size air mattress, chair and small table will fit in it. Also when car camping more than one night I'll erect a 12' X 16' dining fly with four corner poles and a center pole. This year my total trip was 6 weeks. Although I take 5 days to drive out and 5 days to return.

Wow !!! Never been out west. So what is your favorite hike Bryan? This looks amazing. Cannot wait to visit the west. I am so paranoid of bears. Can you do a video on bear prepardness? What to do? What to watch out for? This just looks like a dream, but I realize there are many more creatures that can getch cha out west.
@BryanDeLay
@BryanDeLay Год назад
The west is great with amazing views and I've been many times, but actually the Southern Appalachians is my favorite place to backpack. There's not a big bear population in the Winds, not like Yellowstone NP. In all my backpacking trips in the Winds I've only seen one bear and it was running away from me as fast as it could go. Actually the GSMNP has the most dense black bear population in the world with 1,200 to 1,800 bears, depending on the annual food supply, in 500,000 acres. I carry bear spray in the Winds, because of the possibility of running into a Grizzly bear, but I don't carry bear spray in the Appalachians, even though I've seen many black bears and have had to yell and scare them off the trail several times. There are many videos on RU-vid about what to do in the event of crossing paths with bears.

Was there the second week of July. Snow laid around a long time this Spring but really melted a lot from the 1st on. We were able to do both passes with no traction assist. Went clockwise this time. That is one heck of a grind going counter from Lonesome to J.A.P. I know you've been all over out there but If you haven't been in the New Fork Lakes area, it's worth a look and the trail head isn't far from Pinedale. THX for the effort Brian!
@BryanDeLay
@BryanDeLay Год назад
This is my third time to do this main loop - twice counter clockwise and once clockwise. Did you mean a grind going counter from Lonesome to Texas Pass? The climb up the north side of Texas Pass (clockwise) is short, but really steep; so steep I prefer going up than down it. Yes, I've done several trips starting at New Fork Lakes. New Fork Park is very nice.

Hard to have anything but spectacular in the Winds. At the beginning of the hike I didn’t think that was Nathan. He didn’t arrive after 10pm and was in a tent instead of a tarp. Glad to see him with you on this outing. My son was very near some of your trek 2 weeks ago and he told me how he wished he could of stayed several days longer. Such a great place to hike and enjoy God’s creation. I especially liked when you did a partial bushwhack to cut over to the CDT. Well done, would have enjoyed another hour of video on this trip. Can’t get tired of those views! Greetings from Kentucky!

Thanks Mark! Nathan was supposed to get to Boulder, WY a few days before the trip started to acclimate to the elevation, but didn't get there until the day before. Thanks Scott! I used a Sea-to-Summit bug net that weighs 3.72 ounces. It's shown at the end of the 2nd day. I rarely use it in the southern Appalachian mountains, but certainly use it in the Winds, where mosquitoes can be bad from all the flat water.

Being retired helps, but I've gotten to where I enjoy time at camp and a more laid back trip. It's not physical and more of a mental thing. The base maps are from Caltopo and then imported into a program named Blender, where I animate the trail with the yellow stroke and have the tents and notes appear at the right time.

Another great video in the Winds. I’m curious about your feet care routine. You’re crossing streams with your shoes on. Do you find your feet dry out quickly when crossing in your shoes or do you sometimes change into water sandals when crossing water? What shoes do you prefer for quick drying and hiking?
@BryanDeLay
@BryanDeLay Год назад
Thanks Kyle! For the last two years I've been using the Topo Athletic Hydroventure 2 Trail-Running Shoes. Even though they're water proof they mostly dry pretty fast, more so out west than in the southern Appalachians. More important is using a good pair of wool socks, such as Darn Tough. Also I carry a pair of water proof socks so at camp I can get out of the damp socks, put on my sleep socks then put the water proof socks on over them and put on the damp shoes. About 5 years ago I carried a pair of crocs for crossing creeks, but I prefer my current system.

@@BryanDeLay thanks for the reply. I was in the Winds for my first time a couple weeks back… went to Titcomb via Pole Creek. Definitely crowded, but also terrible weather for three days straight, thunder, sleet, rain, and some snow over night. Was a tough few cold wet days…considering the Cirque for my next time out. If you’ve never been to the Enchantments in Washington you should consider that for a future trip, especially in September to see some of the larch trees turning yellow. Appreciate your videos.
