It’s maybe worth mentioning that although the fire was a great tragedy, when the restoration started they discovered many things that they didn’t know was there. Hidden rooms, old decoration, etc. they even went the route of redoing most of the castle rooms in their original form, they all look spectacular now. So a disaster for sure but the castle looks better than ever now.

Had the opportunity as a young boy back in 1967 to visit England, and my grandmother and I took the tour of Windsor Castle one day. To my delight, hey I was nine, during the tour one of the guards was making faces at his commander, when the commander turned his back.. There was a large crowd and everyone was laughing and pointing. Not sure if it was "planned" or not, but it sure did break up the tour for a few minutes.

One thing I never understand about medieval people is they could build such glorious beautiful buildings 700-900 years ago, but their drawings, paintings and artwork from that era all look sh!t. St. George’s Chapel is like England’s valley of the Kings, with most of the monarchy buried in there from the last 600 years. It’s a pretty scary feeling walking over Henry VIII’s tomb stone, which is slap bang in the middle of the nave (between the choir stalls).

Portraits were not even considered a thing that one could or should do until the 12th century, Richard II being the first monarch to commission a self portrait that hangs in Westminster Abby today. During the dark ages, art was used to depict bible stories, pigments were only available to monastery's, nobles, and royalty. Vanity was taboo and something that royalty and nobles only did as a way to show status using colors to denote hierarchy. So unless you were a monk spending years creating illuminated manuscripts and tinted glass, a noble with time to develop their painter skills outside of battling and birthing and belching from disease, then art in England just wasn't a thing of importance until Richard II.
@cleverusername9369
@cleverusername9369 2 года назад
I feel like art just developed more slowly than architecture, which makes sense in that architecture and construction would've been something widespread, ongoing constantly, and would be highly paid for. Painting would be a relatively young form of art compared to sculpture or architecture

elizabeth's contributions to the war were no joke. she was/is a mechanic and an excellent driver. I have no doubt she knows here way around an engine better than I do. I don't have a ton of respect for philip but I will say his service to his country during WWII was also legit. He was an effective commander who took actions that saved lives. Unlike lord mountbatten who was directly responsible for the sinking of two british destroyers, then because he was a royal was given the title of 'commander of combined operations' where he was the mastermind of the dieppe raid, which resulted in the death or capture of what... some 6000 men. William is a legit helo pilot who has flown SAR missions, Harry fought in afghanistan and was an Apache co-pilot and gunner also in afghanistan. As a canadian I used to have no time for the royal family but have since soften on that position.

Just as an FYI your caption on Prince Philip is wrong. He wasn't Philip of Mountbatten. Before he accepted the stipulations of dropping his role titles to marry Elizabeth he was his Royal Highness Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark. He took Mountbatten as a last name when he shed his foreign titles in tribute to his uncle and his mother's family who pretty much raised him. So when he married her he was actually Lt. Philip Mountbatten. He was given the style of his Royal Highness again and a royal Dukedom when he got married.

I can understand your sense of being 'underwhelmed' at your local castle. I used to cross the Golden Gate Bridge twice daily to work in San Francisco, and just could not understand why out-of-towners were so impressed with it. 'It's a BRIDGE,' I'd say. 'Yes, but it's the Golden Gate Bridge!,' they'd say back! STILL don't get it! I DID get to tour Windsor Castle back in 1990, pre-fire, and appreciate the work that went in to the restoration. Ghosts may not be real, but the stories are nonetheless fascinating in their way. And who can really blame anybody for feeling like SOMETHING must be there - the weight of so much history in one place, and the great and terrible things that took place there. I'm betting the ghost stories are also a big draw from a tourism perspective, so that's also a benefit. Not real: but still awesome!

Your pronounciation of Evesham absolutely threw me; never heard Ev-esham, always Eve-sham

They did a great job protecting royalty when they let a dude climb the fence twice and walk around the palace. He even got in the queens bedroom.

You'd almost think they'd use dogs who would alert a human that something wasn't right. Wonder why they don't. Dobermans and German Shepards wouldn't like the Corgis?

And a partridge in a pear tree. I already made this pond like three times today, but it's irrelevant because it's almost Christmas.

I wish someone could remove one of my cervical vertebrae. I have the "extra" bone in my neck that causes a lot of pain. But then I am not Charles I.
