Thank you everyone who entered the contest. There were so many interesting entries, it was really hard to decided on the winners, especially the first place.
Those who won will be contacted via email a couple of days after this video is published, to not spoil the surprise.
I'm also planning to show a list of honorable mentions in another video, since there is a lot of cool stuff.
Special thanks to my patrons who helped with this, particularly Neiot (who came up with the idea and got it started), Quinn, Vaughn, and Blargedy. I also appreciate all the other patrons who help out with covering the costs in running this channel.

@williamnixon3994

@project4061
@project4061 4 года назад
When you breakdown the blade shape, an remember what most pole arms were designed as, the main blade would have been extremely difficult to shape the blade. The actual kopesh was thick to help with the shaping, and the Cooper design had a much thinner profile, which could break off while forging.

The kopesh polearm and great-rapier are weapons I know well. Both of them have been part of my DnD fantasy setting for almost two decades now, part of a collection of functionally sound non-historical weapons. It does not surprise me much to see such designs mentioned as stand-outs, or that one of these designs won the contest. (The only reason I did not enter one of them myself was that I didn't think they would win, and I had an interesting idea to share with Skall.) ------ I read through the other comments, and a lot of people seemed interested in the great-rapier. I have built a working version of this weapon three times in my life, have practiced quite a lot with them, and so have some observations. It is great at blocking -- it is two-handed, light in the air, and the hilt doesn't go past the elbow (critical to your defense options). It is great at zoning against any weapon shorter than itself, due to its speed and the level of stability you get with two hands. It is a FANTASTIC thrusting weapon, superior to a spear for about half a dozen reasons that I won't get into here. It can be used well one-handed if you are fast on your feet and have some space to maneuver in. But it utterly sucks at making deep cuts (relative to most other blades) or dealing with bigger shields. In terms of design, the main details you want to include: -- a 2 inch gap between your hand and the crossguard, to assist the crossguard in protecting your hand -- enough weight in the hilt to balance the blade at 4 to 6 inches in front of the guard, along the blade -- a wide flat-bottomed pommel so that you can ram into it with your torso to drive the point thru armor -- no guard on the back half of the cross-guard, if you need to use it one-handed (example: fighting injured) ------ My own entry was a lightweight two-handed weapon trapping tool with about a 3ft reach past the guard; something of a horseshoe on a short stick, but each prong of the horseshoe was shaped something like a scimitar. You advance, force confrontation, trap the enemy weapon, then proceed to pretty easily murder them without letting their weapon go as you do so. The off hand's grip was designed to manipulate the weapon alignment with some leverage, and also allow "axe swings" of the weapon from about 4ft past your hand. There is also a short spike between the prongs, in case you needed to stab into a trapped arm. I've never seen anything like it even in fantasy art, but it's sound in concept and I thought it original enough to win. ------ Seeing the other entries... I wish that I had styled up my weapon schematic a lot more. I didn't realize that the weapon-smiths wouldn't be taking artistic liberties with design, so my schematic looks a bit modern relative to the fantasy drawings shown in the video. I could have had twisting metal, animal heads, ancient runes, and such. Certainly there was a ton of room for it. ------ I'm curious about all the entries that didn't make the videos (this one or the next). Is there a place where we can go to view all the submissions? That would be interesting to me.

All you guys who have sword designs that you want made for real, find a 3D artist, get them or someone else to make a mod for Blade & Sorcery, and then get VR someday. They may not feel like a real sword all the time in VR, but to see it in 3D in front of your face, satisfying as hell.

Just here to spread some information. That language which we saw with the Wyvern's blade is called Glagoljica. It comes from the middle ages and it comes from the world Glagoljati which means to talk. The language was most predominantly used in the current Balkan region of the world and there are still many stone engravings left of the language.

I really enjoyed being apart of this and seeing all these amazing designs. I can see why these designs won, especially over my design (although that wasn’t hard to do considering my design was amateur at best and horrible at worst). This was a very fun contest and I hope that you can do something like this again in the future, have an amazing day!

Also, a few of the others are super cool, but also would work. The trident, the great rapier, the mace and the nordic blade were also very inspiring.

I think a lot of people would like to see all of these made. If many different sword makers each made one as a showcase piece it might happen. As an incentive, Skall could agree to do a review of each one as free publicity for the maker. After the review, the swords could either be returned to the maker as a display piece or auctioned off with the proceeds going to the maker to cover the cost of making it. What does everyone think?

I don't see why not. I found I'd be happy seeing any of the runners up in action alongside the cane if given the chance, and they played the same game we did, doing a better job at making an interesting design that caught the judge's eyes in the end.

Oh no, I have already seen it and read it through. But designs are subjective to those looking at them.W hat we may prefer is not what another prefers, clearly. If you wish to be angry about this and denounce the contest, go right on ahead, I would by lying if I said I wasn't a tad disappointed I didn't place higher myself having put in a good amount of work before and during the contest myself, but I clearly didn't catch anyone's eye with the design of the sword I entered. There's no need to go through the comments reiterating yourself when, as you said, you already have a well documented comment stating your "why".

The fourth Prize winner would be easily mounted with a net that would lock it into place much like a Chinese short spear locking ring only my preference would be threaded in addition it would be an excellent way to solidly mount the blade as the blade would set in a rest and the nut would move thereby allowing for built-in flop and being able to remove the slack at will

I really look forward to Cooper Khopesh. I saw similar design on one of the miniatures in W40k (Thousand Sons Legion Praetor, for those who would like to know), where it was called Force Axe, and I was quite impressed to its visual design. I was wondering how it would fare in combat (in terrestrial conditions, of course), but I was a little worried to ask (some people unfortunately tend to take fantasy designs as personal insults), so, here is (or will be) the answer

Hey, here's a question you might want to tackle one day: what would modern armies look like if only muscle-powered weapons and vehicles were allowed? Given modern manufacturing and materials for both weapons and armour, and several iterations to work out the meta, what do you think we'd settle on?
