That was actually good justification from Ieyasu on tearing down the defenses of Osaka Castle with out causing another all out war immediately, "It is a time of peace, these are no longer needed." And being the guy in charge, you can't exactly argue with that logic.

It's also possible that Tokugawa Ieyasu gave them such a raw peace deal *because the Sanadas' earned a rep for double-crossing peace deals like in Ueda I and II* . He knew the Sanadas couldn't be trusted when holding a fortified position.

Turtling up in Osaka was a big mistake, they made themselves sitting ducks. Ieyasu and even Hidetada learned from their previous encounters with the Sanada by resorting to cannon bombardement which eventually payed off. I actually find it kind of poetic that Ieyasu didn’t keep his end of the deal, cause Masayuki Sanada often did the same thing. Basically he pulled a ‘Masayuki’ over Hideyori and also Nobushige/Yukimura.
@azarishiba2559
@azarishiba2559 2 года назад
Well, he pulled a "Masayuki" over Yodo-dono and Ono Harunaga. Yukimura knew too well that peace treat was a total trap. If It weren't by Yodo-dono's pressure, the bombardment wouldn't have had success either. The big mistake wasn't staying in Osaka, the big mistake was to trust Ieyasu and thinking he was willing to let Toyotomi at peace.

Looking at The Shimabara rebellion failure, I think its only matter of time before Odaka fall.. With or without Yodo-Dono intervention Japan in general at that time really has no desire to plunge into another Sengoku just to satisfy Hideyori's desire fornanother change of regime

If I was a Toyotomi strategist, I would be laughing hysterically at the castle walls coming down, I should have seen that coming, yes that wasn't part of the deal, but following the Shogunate was, so if he made an official decision to destroy the walls, we are powerless to do anything

The fact that Hideyori had 100000 samurai defending him and choose to negotiate is mind boggling. I understand that they were still outnumbered but still, defending a castle is much easier than attacking one as we saw throughout the series. Hideyori gave up too easily and he was naive to believe that Ieyasu would keep his word.
@Kidneyjoe42
@Kidneyjoe42 2 года назад
You actually don't want a whole bunch of people as the defender in a siege. Castles are designed to be effectively garrisoned with as few people as possible because the whole point is for them to be a force multiplier for that small garrison so that you don't have to commit large forces for defense. Everyone beyond that is simply an extra mouth to feed, shortening the time the castle can hold out. Toyotomi Hideyoshi himself exploited this principle at the siege of Tottori, driving civilians into the castle to hasten the defenders' starvation. As for defending a castle being easier than attacking one, that's kind of true in a vacuum. But the reality is that you will never win by simply sitting in your castle. They work because attackers typically don't have the luxury of waiting out the defenders. But when there are no external reinforcing armies that could potentially break the siege and the besieging force is in complete control of the surrounding area to the extent that supplies are no issue, holing up in a castle like this becomes a prolonged suicide. It's precisely why the Hojo had zero chance of success against Hideyoshi's siege of Odawara. There was no mechanism by which they were ever going to drive off the besiegers, no condition they could meet to achieve victory. And the same was true for Osaka. Their only chance for success was going on the offensive. The instant Tokugawa's forces were allowed besiege the castle, the outcome was decided.

It goes without saying that, to be a leader during wartime, you need to be ruthless to a degree. Ieyasu understands this, but Hideyori does not. That was the fatal flaw in the Toyotomi camp; they decided to be reactive, rather than proactive. Had they followed the advice of Mototsugu and Yukimura, things could very well have turned out differently. Next time, the Second Siege of Osaka, and a legend is born.

Keep in mind ladies and gentlemen, the Shogunate army commanded by Tokugawa Hidetada (in actuality commanded by Ieyasu from behind the scenes) I believe at the time were composed of young individuals who know nothing of warfare, including commanding daimyo sent their own troops to occupy key areas close to defensive networks cannot be taken. Also, veteran warriors like Masamune Date, Kagekatsu Uesugi and other Tozama based clans cannot be relied from the Tokugawa not only their political resentment(s) but in my opinion, their conspiratorial dialogues with the enemy before the siege and simultaneously, using the event as an opportunity to expand their own ambitions whatever the cost. Finally on the Toyotomi side, not all are enthusiastic of following Hideyoshi’s legacy but desiring personal retribution against Ieyasu, enriching their lifestyles and a woman shouldn’t be a commanding figure that restraining warmongering combatants are difficult, especially if some are outlaws.

At that pace, Tokugawa forces wouldn't have succeed in taking Osaka Castle. Yodo-dono was not suit to being a high commander. I would have supported Gotou Matabei's propose to make Yukimura the supreme commander. There are some other stories about Siege of Osaka: I've read that when Ieyasu knew for the first time a Sanada entered Osaka Castle to aid Toyotomi, Ieyasu trembled when asked the messenger "Which Sanada? The father, or the son?". He just feared the Sanada that much, especially Masayuki. Other stories says that Ieyasu would actually try to talk to Yukimura to convince him to change sides, that Ieyasu would even give him the entire Shinano province to domain (not only that would have meant to return to Ueda, but also being lord of a gigantic province, the former territory of the Takeda), but Yukimura declined those offers. Yukimura's loyalty is legendary. I think this battle was not a great victory for Ieyasu. Yes, he succeeded at making the Toyotomi loyalists to surrender, but again, that was because Yodo-dono had almost the last word. If Yukimura or any of the most pro-war commanders were in full charge, a peace treat wouldn't have been possible, and thus, a successful siege by Tokugawa part either. The narration in this video was the best! It made the already epic Siege of Osaka even more epic! The pauses, the emotional introduction, the cliffhanger, the words of awesomeness used... Brilliant!

I will wait for the video that explains the social order differences between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Ashikaga one if you finally decide to make it🤩 Most of the time people focus on the battles or "palace politics" alone, but since I learned about the strict social class system and other social rules(I think that he stated that people can't even leave his province?) that Tokugawa created I always wondered how Ashikaga one was and his differences in that regard. I couldn't find anyone talking about that in contrast with the other, only about Tokugawa one. Hope my english is understandable xD Thanks for answering me in the video btw!

while it is fooling to just sit in a castle and let the enemy have free reign outside Yukimura's plan was idiotic, they had 100k, Tokugawa had 200k, he wanted to not only leave their defensive position but then split his army so that a small contingent of maybe 20k would block the road Tokugawa's army came down and the rest would go siege down Tokyo. how long could that army hold off Tokugawa's 200k army? a day? a couple days? is he expecting to take down the capital that easily? they would have been sandwiched between a castle and 200k troops if they had followed his advice. he should have taken 20-30k of the army and split it into smaller armies and have them roam outside the castle, raiding supplies, hitting isolated parts of the enemy army etc.
