Norman's character is absolutely brilliant, he's so cynical because he's seen it all and so is just enjoying how ludicrous the situation is that they have helped create. Plus there's the added irony that I think he gets that this would be a great story to write on at the newspaper but that the only reason he heard about it was because he left the newspaper for politics, and since he's now in politics he couldn't write the story because then it would send his ass down the river as well as Carcetti's, but still he's just sitting on a great story that no one else would be able to get so there's a defining career moment for him except now he's in the wrong career. I'm half sad he didn't get to write on it.

This is why I love the wire. It goes a lot deeper than just the streets. It reveals problems in different levels of law enforcement, different levels of government, education, journalism, the average labor worker's life, the court room It shows so much and how it all ties together to create 1 fucked up reality
@nihilusJ90
@nihilusJ90 9 лет назад
I like how Norman saw the irony in this situation (and wishes he could write on it, as a reporter), but there's still another layer of irony on top of that, which is unknown to him. It's that people from his own 'tribe' (reporters) are using the very same lie and manufacturing their own lies, contributing to the whole fiasco. And once the bubble bursts, there are already too many people involved to let the truth come out. And thus comes the ''discuss this first as a matter of public policy'' which basically means ''If y'all could swallow this shit, so no one loses their job, that'd be great'' That's why none of the top people ever take responsibility, and things like this never get to court... In a sense, they ARE above the law.
@OOHyeahpeggyhill

That was one of the things that made The Wire so outstanding to me. As well as being entertaining, it was almost educational, showing you layers of corruption from seasons 1-5 right from the police and street dealers, all the way up through "the system" into the higher levels of politics. After it all finished, and with that profound but sort of harshly realistic/depressing ending, it just felt like a wonderful experience.

@Candystripedshredder
@Candystripedshredder 8 лет назад
+Kevin Kibble As I recall, there weren't sufficient police resources (or interest) to make a case against Marlo Stanfield, who was, in fact, dropping bodies all over Baltimore unchecked. McNulty tied pretty ribbons around dead bodies and wrote ribbons into old Coroner reports in order to make it look like a nutty serial killer was operating in the city. The non-existent serial killer brought Federal attention (and Federal funding) to the Baltimore Police Department, which afforded McNulty and his fellow officers the basic resources (roadworthy cars, paid overtime, etc.) that they needed in order to do their jobs effectively. TL:DR - The murders weren't fake, he simply jazzed up the suspect's profile.

It’s beautiful how McNulty can be viewed. Personally, I think he is the best cop on the show. People can say he was selfish, he didn’t care about anyone, but he cared about the job & only the job. The city ate him alive. He was crafted by his experiences in the street, the mass corruption, and seeing endless dead bodies with nobody giving a damn about them. I know it’s a show, but for a second just put yourself in his shoes. He consistently sees murders, see what it is doing to children, learns of his friend’s (Bodie) death, chases serial killers who tear apart the city he loves, and absolutely nothing is done about it all so people can make more money and have more power Is McNulty the bad guy? Or is he a product of his environment? Every level of Baltimore in the show is corrupt. He’s the only character in the show who is corrupt to stop people from dying.

Why are no other Wire heads talking about the fact that Tommy Carcetti is running for President? You know that bland Dem that nobody talks about? The one sitting behind Hillary and Bernie? The one they ignore at every debate? That's Martin O'Malley, former Baltimore Mayor and Maryland Governor - the exact inspiration for Tommy Carcetti.

I love this scene. 1. Rawls and Mcnultys ex sticking up for him in their own way. Rawls saying that lie led to some bust. Mcnultys ex saying consequences if it comes out. 2. Jobs being threatened when daniels says he wants to fire detectives responsible.

You can say that The Sopranos is the best drama series ever. You can lionize Breaking Bad as a work of art. You can laud Game of Thrones by epic sweep. All reasonable. But nobody has yet topped The Wire.

Aiden Gillian is amazing in this scene, Reg E Cathey immaculately becomes the viewer watching all this go down, but the absolute pinnacle of this scene is Lance Reddick's Daniels leaving the room. His expression as he walks through the door on exiting could burn through concrete. Should just show this in acting classes and say "yo, this is how you do it" because it's not big, expressive or showy, it's all in tone and delivery. Hell, The Wire is a 60 episode showcase of tone, body language and delivery

This last season and last episode, in particular, brought all the major BS of the whole series a head; it shows how complicity and personal/professional interest can cause ppl to become soo weak, they don’t know what to do or what’s right or wrong, just what the system demands as a sacrifice and scapegoat. It also how’s how’s you can have the best intentions and try to say true to your own code, but still miss the mark morally and or ethically, which can lead to a Pandora’s box worth of chaos. It also shows how if you actually hold ppl accountable, based on a twisted system(and even though you may get a few legit bad apples), you end up serving up good ppl, who made bad mistakes and giving a pass, if not, outright rewards to the corrupt players that have made themselves apart of the same system, which is suppose to hold them accountable-- with obvious signs of conflict of interest. It shows just how complicit all the major characters are in a broke system, that was always design to be Broke-- and benefits a few. And honestly-- there’s too much “holier than thou” mentality that ends up making allies enemies, friends bitter rivals, and enemies so viciously combatant, that even when it’s a solution that benefits all involved, they would rather make war than peace, and only use peace to crush the other side-- too bad, they’re all in the same damn boat-- and the biggest joke, That’s the Game--they’re the causes of their own problems and each other’s problems, good and bad-- and the other part of the Game, is basically them, trying to get all they can, for causes they believe in(and many times betray) befor they crap-out-- even if it means sacrificing or scapegoating ppl in the game and outside the game, to do it.

I love the quote, that comes right after this scene, when Daniels is furiously considering just spilling the beans to the newspapers about all of this: Rhonda Pearlman: "This is my career. This is everything. You go public and it hurts Carcetti. Maybe he doesn't get to be governor, but he's still the mayor and Bond is still my boss and you know the weight will not fall on them, it NEVER does!" Daniels: "Christ!"

They all sound weird af (Idris is the best at it but whenever he raises his voice his real accent comes out completely).
