Thanks to Idris Elba’s performance, Stringer Bell has such a strong outward presence that it’s easy to overlook how out of his depth he really is (even as it’s mostly after Avon goes to prison).
@shavonegranville6004

I really liked how his peers all saw stringer as a business man but the other businessmen all saw stringer as just some thug.
@benmerliss7702
@benmerliss7702 2 года назад
@@shavonegranville6004 Most of his street contemporaries didn't actually view him as such. He technically outranked them within the Barksdale hierarchy so opening their mouths would have been incredibly risky, but their frequent puzzled and disapproving glances as Stringer attempts to talk business are pretty telling.

@chameleonpa1nt
@chameleonpa1nt Год назад
@@benmerliss7702 Right on the money. There was never a shot Stringer was ever going to fully get into that world and legitimize himself with people who don't take him seriously. But he is aware that its pretty clear warring with Marlo would only hurt them as far as muscle, product and law enforcement is concerned. Avon was right to take the threat of Marlo seriously but was blinded by the fire of competition and the fight for the crown that he didn't see what it was doing to their organization. A crisis of leadership.

@nickdiamante4939
@nickdiamante4939 2 года назад
Yes I love that scene! it confirms the fact that there was much more below the surface. Stringer is a character that has a lot of depth. The fact that Idris Baltimore accent sucks…his natural accent fighting through his Baltimore impression created some new kinda accent. It makes him stand out even more as a character, it gave him a weird kinda slow but intentional voice with the vocal inflections in odd places. I wish they went more into depth in Stringer. Like I would’ve loved to seen where he learned about the value of practical business knowledge and how he developed from street kid to a well rounded business man.
@winstonsmith09

Non-American here. Can you interpret his non-Baltimore accent as a affectation to show he's trying to become bigger than Baltimore, kinda like someone softening their regional dialect to command more respect. Kinda a middle class, moving up trait?

@winstonsmith09 black person who lived in Baltimore and all over America here. I'm not sure the accent is intentional since he's British acting American but I like your theory. He is an educated character and by nature he would have a different dialect than his co conspirators.

What I love about Stringer is he's the embodiment of a running theme of the show. If drug gangs would stop all that head-strong BS and behave like normal businesses they'd be no different than a legal business. Plenty of legal businesses sell addictive and harmful things but, they can settle things by calling the cops and using courts. If drugs were legal and the dealers could use the system, they'd be no different than McDonalds or Anheuser Busch.

This would be true if the US government, in collaboration with the CIA and armed forces, didn't control the global drug trade. They let the cartels operate here and there, but whenever they need headlines, in x country, they round them up, and act like they are enforcing some sort of laws. That's why, none of this would ever happen.
