Season 5 gets a bad rap but the entire season from the intro plays off that very theme. Even in arguably it's weakest entry the wire is no less brilliant
@@jamesr2547 In one episode they try to take some street kids to a restaurant to get more confidence in society and they're completely mystified and overwhelmed by the process of being waited upon. Growing up on the streets of Baltimore is rough. And the showrunner David Simon knows his shit.
Remember when the show is set. In that day and age a ghetto kid hardly knew what a copy machine looks (is not like he's been to an office or a university or a library)
One of the best things about The Wire is the absence of a backing music soundtrack. Let the ambient noise be the music- the police station noises, the street, the echos of the corners. Best show ever.
Wow, I've been through the series 6 times and failed to notice that. And I'm one who is so sick of music being used to spoonfeed me emotions that should be delivered by the characters and the writers. This show is simply too good to actually exist, yet it does. Good catch.
My favorite background sounds are the corner boys 'advertising' their packs by shouting the 'brand name'. For anybody who has spent even the least bit of time on the block, the use of those sounds makes every scene on the block sound authentic. "Pandemic! We got that Pandemic!" Lol
When David Simon was a journalist he spent a year with the Baltimore homicide unit researching a book. The crazy thing is that the photocopy trick actually happened.
Yeah, the case law on this kind of thing stems from NYC cops doing the photocopier trick. A case was overturned where a confession was gained doing this, so the rules were changed. The police are still allowed to lie to you to obtain a confession, but they are not allowed to lie with a prop. So, they can say to you, as a lie, that: "We have your prints on the murder weapon." but they can't show you a piece of paper that says the same thing.
I think go get an education or a regular paying job (a file clerk who makes copies would be a good start) or some common sense or better yet all three so you wont have to worry about being in that situation and also so you can be smart enough to know how a copy machine works.
the timing of that guy seeing his friend walk by at the exact moment he stuffs his mouth with french fries so he can’t explain himself is comedic gold.
Ox5f3759df Full translation from Mein Kampf "All this was inspired by the principle-which is quite true within itself-that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously."
"The machine is never wrong son." LMFAO!!! This show was brilliant!! I watched this show when it was on HBO and I bought the complete series from Amazon years ago. I think I will start binge watching the show again this weekend when I'm off from work!!
I just got on Crave and have been enjoying a full rewatch. Even though I've watched it all like 2 or 3 times, feels exciting still going through the episodes.
Absolutely brilliant. I am English and it hurts to say as the show is American. That it is the best there is. I have watched the whole 5 series 5 times. The first time I couldn’t understand what the black guys were saying. So I watched it all again with headphones. Then my wife watched it, then my son and finally we all watched it again. Top stuff.
That one has my vote too! Both actors just played the hell out of that scene and it felt like some modern Wild West standoff but with class. It was just a fantastic opening. As Tom said 2 comments below me, the season 4 opener with Snoop buying the nail gun was up there too but it wasn't as good as the Omar and Brotha one! Good choice man
But the best throwaway detail in the WHOLE SHOW? The young’un who wanted to be Omar in a playfight, ended i’ve been the one who…you know. TOTALLY accidental.
If criminals are going to hire that he's at least get a smart Lackey better yet one than asking can tell a difference between a lie detector and office supplies I was cracking up
Great show, went from drug dealers and detectives to adding politicians, and then by season 5 they had the newspaper room. This show really took you on a trip to Baltimore and made you feel like you were there for an hour every week.
This show was literally too good. Any other show seems sub-par by comparison, and it's depressing to know that the odds of another show just as good ever being made are tiny.
I just finished watching the series. Its good, and compelling, but it doesn't have the same 'oh man, so good!' feeling as say Breaking Bad. Unless I've missed something? Or maybe back in those days, they just didn't use the same story telling techniques.
Buffoon1980 it's on a throne of it's own design.... There's no competition. The Wire is it's own beast! Any other acclaimed show has an equal. Sopranos is Goodfellas and Godfather for TV.... Breaking Bad is Scarface for TV. There's literally nothing as ambitious and fully realized as The Wire
utopian201 are you kidding? Breaking bad loses it's way and there are some really weak characters, scenes and even episodes that are basically just fillers where the writers ran out of ideas. The fly springs to mind as an example
And to think, social media wasn't even around for the writers to base that statement on. Yet they still hit the nail on the head. This line and Bunk's line at the end of the scene foreshadowed more than just the plot for the fifth season. That's how you know this show was ahead of its time.
"Two quarter pounders, big fries , mcdonald land cookies- yeah thats how your boy rolls!" - i love it- bunk describing how someone orders as how they roll.
Loved the Homicide version more. Same trick but one of the detectives walks in and freaks out, saying there’s radiation coming off that ‘lie detector’, enough to make you sterile, and dashes out again.
White, Black, Hispanic, whatever - we're all the same in the end. And the proof of this is that I shove McDonalds fries into my mouth the same way Marnell does................
That is what you are McDonalds and soda nation. Addicted to consumerism and junk food, programed by tv and media and that is why he said Americans are stupid people, we pretty much believe what we are told to
@@SDsailor7 I only started watching The Sopranos recently (currently in Season 4) so I can't speak for the entire show just yet, but so far, I think The Wire is unbeaten.
@@SDsailor7 I watched the Wire years ago, and the Sopranos I just finished. I think I will rewatch the Wire too just because damn it's good. But what I would say is the Sopranos is incredibly ambitious, got the family life, mob life, business, medical issues, psychology, post 9/11 stuff, etc. Tony Soprano is on par with Walter White, McNulty, if not superior as a fleshed out character, not to mention paving the way for TV antiheroes from that point on. All that being said, The Wire is a bit more focused while still being hugely ambitious with the gangland viewpoint, and escalating with the school, media and politics. Because of that though there's such a huge cast that it's like an opera versus a band with a lead singer, though obviously McNulty is a main focus. My main issues with the Sopranos is that there are several story threads that get left behind, while others get incredible attention to detail. I can't remember if that was as much of an issue in the Wire but it felt more concise in its tale somehow. I guess in conclusion, they are both very much worth watching. And if you haven't I also suggest The Shield and Son's of Anarchy. They both have elements of the Sopranos while being focused on criminals and criminal cops. Lower budget and way faster paced but still deep and impactful.
Really, my favorite opening scene is the very first scene of the whole series. Another story that actually happened just the way it was told. "Got to. It's America, man."
2 times for me. both times was hard for me to keep up with the political aspects, especially in the last couple seasons. only more reason to watch it again lol.
*Me if I were that situation:* "Hm, this lie detector looks a lot like a copy machine from my old job." *Detective:* "Yea, the lie detector tests you see on TV have been outdated for a while now. It's all digital now." *Me:* "That makes sense." 8 P
The actor/detective in the background at the 2:16 minute mark did a decent job keeping a straight face from laughing, because by his facial expression you can tell he wanted to laugh LOL. Now,"we ready professor" LMAO
I remember my elementary school teacher and principal did me the same way lmao I didnt believe my friends when they told me they didnt snitch but now I know they really didnt
Even if they could, a polygraph test is not admissible in court. The polygraph is used for exactly this kind of shit, fucking with the suspect to extract information. Look it up.
