This video is legitimately the reason I am still playing music. When I first saw it six years ago, I was a 20-year-old who missed marching band. this inspired me to Keep pursuing music in nontraditional ways. Now I'm in a weird hippie marching band doing paid gigs all over Chicago. Thanks, Nat. And thanks, Adam for sharing this.
Or maybe those who do have a musical ear and prefer the original? This one is surely played well, but it lacks the edge - and most importantly the groove: Big orchestras can't swing - and I am talking physics here. And these guys are out of sync despite their conductor.
I just want to say thank you God for my ears to hear such wonderful sounds. And thank you to the RU-vid algorithm for showing me this amazing clip. Until yesterday, I had never heard this before or knew anything about the Youngblood Brass band. I have replayed from about 05:13 onward over 50 times since just last night. Everything about this is perfect; the way he dances with the tuba, the way he is sweating, the conducter, the other horns in the back. This right here took me back to my preteen years when I first fell in love with the sound of the tubas and the marching band in general. Oh my lord is all I can say. I am blown away and this man and his sound has made me decide right here and now that I am purchasing a tuba within the next week to pursue my true passion...being in a band and blasting my little heart out on this big horn. I haven't played since college in 20 years so I am excited to see how much I remember and how far I can go with it. Wish me luck guys!
I have watched this video at least 20 times now. You are right, everything about this performance is perfect. 7 minutes of the most intense brass playing I have ever seen. He channels every bit of his soul through that horn. I've played trumpet for 35 years and this was the inspiration I didn't know I needed.
Actually that is a King 2350 sousaphone. It doesn't have short action valves like the 20k does and doesn't have the loop on the valve section like the 20k. Great performance. I wish I was that good.
Listening to this piece for like last 5 years or so. I am not into big band music at all, but i love music overall. And i totally love Nat's playing style, using his voice, hence wide spreading tube's natural tone range and overall tone color. AWESOME!
keep in mind the micing technique. He places the mic pretty deep in the bell, which makes it incredibly clear than a centered or side mic'd sousa. It is definitely a Bb, you can tell by the tubing. The cat has mad chops and can play clean, dont try to put that credit on the horn.
Came back to this video after hearing Brooklyn played during the Kansas St. Montana St. NCAA basketball game. Took me a second to remember where I knew the tune from
Youngblood is from Wisconsin, so a lot of the local people had seen them play before. Nat went to UW, and one of their trumpet players was in the UW band (I think). So that's how we knew them...
I live in Russia in the city of Barnaul and I play in the best orchestra in Russia in RHYTHM BAND we also play Brooklyn and I play this solo on I play it without multiphonics but from now on I will teach like this
Not sure how is it called but is is simple use of own voice together with instrument's sound. It works on any wind instrument you can find around the world, be it sax, tuba or didgeridoo, but not so much conventional players are aware of that :).
Initialdluvr, I'm taking a shot at this. Nat's flexiblity on the horn is very good, so a lot of "breaks" he does in between the drum stops are a combination of these: half valving, stacatto notes with/ voice (Multiphonics), voice with a flutter tongue without playing the instrument, and voice alone during the scratches and yell.
wow, that many of you know about him? i didn't even learn about this song until my friend who is tuba nerd showed me it, but i'm really glad he did, cuz this song's awesome.
yeah, my tuba friend is actually getting the sheet music for this as a late christmas present, and we have hopes of somehow practicing this to where we can play this at our talent show.
I got to :^) I'm one of the trumpet players. When he annouced he was playing with us, all the youngblood fans in the band were hella pumped. About 15 of us didn't even need the music...
I never watched the concert put on by the University. But I did once,on PBS. And it was this show. My jaw was on the floor. That’s the baddest ass bitchin tones ever produced by way of brass. You literally have to crawl into that instrument and put in on! Wraps around you like an anaconda. It would never dare to tame a beast like that. What a cool instrument. I’d love to hear this guy play a tune with the Barry Sax player from Tower of Power. Not a battle. Just play. Imagine the portal that would open!
Sometimes it’s like a purring dinosaur. I bet if you put this guy in a fighter jet the pilot would be unable to knock him out with g force. This is Olympic shit!
@tubasister20k - It might sound like he's singing that part, but I can assure you he's not. He only sings the multiphonic stuff. I know cause I played with him in Dallas Brass for 3 years and heard him do this stuff every night... it's legit.
Nate McIntosh. Best. Sousaphonist. Ever. Playing a trombone part while relaxing... and awesome solos... Even if I prefer Original Youngblood Brass Band version, this one is incredible.
