💀 UTG DEEP DISCUSSIONS 💀
🎥 Topics of Terror from the Rabbit Hole of Randomness
🍿 The Witch is NIGHTMARE FUEL
🎬 Connor takes on a highly-requested film that enters our Nightmare Fuel series for the first time. 2015's The Witch provided a cultural shift in the folk horror genre, and cemented Anya Taylor-Joy & Robert Eggers in the world of horror. Just how effective is The Witch?

@@samuelhatlestad6676 How a mother dies is not as scary as what'll happen to her daughter or what she has to go through in life in an abandoned village after her mother has passed. Implications, not jumpscares for the moment. An untreatable broken bone in your body, not the $1000 lamp your cat broke. Lasting effect > shock value.

That sounds like the perfect setting. I watched it just before I went to go see a band play live. I enjoyed the concert, but in the back of my mind I was like “omg that movie was so unsettling!”

One of the finest horror films I've ever seen. And the writing perspective is what does it for me the most; this isn't a tale that's meant to be taken at face value, rather it's presented from the POV of the villagers who exile the family at the beginning. It's basically taking a deep dive into witchcraft grimoires of the middle ages and giving us a series of 'fates' that befall people who stray from the prescribed godliness of the day. As if to say 'this is what Satan's arsenal looks like' as a way to warn people beforehand of making the same mistakes as the hapless and 'prideful' father does. His sins, that look very light to us? Are exactly the kind of thing you'd hammer home the point on in a puritan religious education. The idea that 'white lies are the worst ones because they let the devil inside'. Reminds me a lot of the fire and brimstone Baptist church my aunt took my cousins to when they were younger. The point was to put you in a perpetual state of fear of Satan as opposed to spending any time doing any of that silly worshipping stuff. There was such a witchfinder general vibe to it because it was so much more concerned on the things you're not supposed to do as opposed to celebrating the joys of living.

Thomason was the hero of the story. Catherine and her religion did the damage. The witch was freedom from her families religion. It's a wild movie and it makes me uncomfortable every time I see it

Loved this film and this episode - my suggestion for a future episode would be 'Hell Bound' from Season 5 of Angel. A standout for me because it deals with a top-shelf source of terror, doesn't try to show or visualise the main point of utter dread within the plot - even among all the normalised supernature of the show's world - and instead leaves it to your imagination, aside from one trouser-dampening shot of a very ominous looking gateway to hell but no hint as to what's on the other side. Anchoring the whole thing with Spike's emotional arc. Excellent channel

I'll say this, I wasn't really scared most of the movie, maybe a bit tense during some suspenseful scenes, but not really frightened. Then I saw the boots and heard him speak, and I leaned back in my chair as far as I could from the tv and just repeated, "Nope," until the end. I've seen a lot of horror movies, and very few have managed to chill me to the core like the ending to "The VVitch."

I agree with the comment below that this had something of The Wicker Man about it. I think its how in both films the viewer knows from early in the film that the evil is inescapable, they're doomed and we're sat there watching. Man, when Woodward (can't remember his character's name) finally understands what his fate is..scares me cold to even think about it.

The production design is so beautiful, love love love it. Worth watching just for that. Taylor-Joy is brilliant in this role. She is such an intriguing actor and incredible in everything she's done. I also think it's interesting how witches are often shown as old withered women with aging bodies and faces. The dreaded "hag". As if our bodies become horrifying and disgusting when aged. I don't really see men's aged bodies often portrayed this way.

@@chasehedges6775 I agree. It was really well done, and for a single set piece, and a mere 7-8 "talents"? Quite well done. When I realized what the witch did to the baby, I was hooked. Kept hoping the dad would put it together, but he wasn't "that guy". Lol it was a sad tale, but it also gives us a window into the time. People TRULY felt this happened to folks, and who's to say it didn't? Thousands of people went missing during this time period, it was a constant that someone would go to visit a neighbor 30 miles away and find that they were just "gone". Sometimes it looked like they struggled and fought, sometimes it didn't. Who's to say how they met their fate? Indigenous people? Flora/fauna? Maybe something altogether more nefarious.
