Gaunter O`Dimm. Master Mirror. The Man of Glass. The Merchant of Mirrors... a fine character we could talk about forever. Smart, cunning, powerful. Devoid of human weaknesses, but not devoid of human vices. Vain and self-righteous Demon from some other world, who came to Neverland just for the fun of it. To play with human destinies. Gaunter O`Dimm is a real god in the Witcher universe. And the enemy of Geralt of Rivia.

Is Gaunter O’Dimm a god?
@rtxmeatlug3149
@rtxmeatlug3149 Год назад
Yes, in my opinion. In fact, I think he's not just **a** god, he's **the God.** The Witcher world is dark and depressing, so it'd make sense for its supreme being to be malevolent instead of benevolent. GO'D has also shown numerous attributes of a divine being (which Satan/Devil/Djinns/Demons don't have):- 1. The power of nature: Created a massive sea storm at a whim. 2. The power of creation: Created an entire dimension filled with stars and constellations with merely a clap of his hands, just for playing a riddle with Geralt. Even said replying to an amused Geralt, "you like it? Plenty more from whence it came" implying that he has created many more such worlds. 3. The power of Time: Paused reality with a clap of his hands and even decided to allow Geralt's movement in stopped Time. Claimed to have learnt Time manipulation for amusement. 4. The power of 4th wall awareness: Looks directly at the player while replying "No Geralt, you don't. This one time I shall spare you and not grant your wish". 5. The power of destiny/fate: His card's description on the official website states several things, such as "Our fate is in his hands", "he's always been there, quietly pulling at fate's strings", "his influence knows no bouds", and "You may be tempted to try to defy the diabolical trickster, but in the end all will play by his rules and all will bend to his will. He's Master Mirror, and it's he who decides how the story plays out". These statements imply how GO'D controls fate off the screen and always has a higher purpose. Even if you're tempted to defy him (such as Geralt "beating" him in the riddle), even that is a part of his greater plan in the grand scheme of things.

I would love to see him against an enraged higher Vampire or a unseen Elder Vampire. The Unseen has powers who seemingly rivals a "god" and the unseen ones could be the strongest Vampires who live. I believe no where is stated that there is a higher ranked Vampire then the few unseen Elder Vampire. So if O'Dim could freeze a unseen Elder in time or kill him with one clap, then i would call him a true god. But its possible that he cant do something against Vampires cause he is the man of the mirrors and such mirrors dont work on Vampires in folklore. Would be a interessting matchup 😊

@@rtxmeatlug3149 I don't think he's a/the god... But rather "the other guy"... Let's check the facts... He wanders around, finding people in trouble and offers them to fulfill their wishes and takes their soul in return... Sounds familiar? Plus, he toys with humans, corrupts them and even the wishes he grants always have some sort of a catch... On top of it all, the base for this character (and the story from Hearts of Stone) is an old story about a man who sold his soul to the devil, but requested that the contract is to be concluded in Rome, determined never to visit that city. However, one time, while he was on a journey and entered an inn. And the devil appeared, showing him that the name of the inn was Rome and that it wasn't specified it had to be the city in the contract... Hmmmm, sounds familiar again... Wasn't there a contract to be concluded on the Moon in Hearts of stone? Of course, we see him as extremely powerful in the game as well, capable of changing weather, stopping time... Oh, a lot of people said that the initials of his name make sense (GOD). But, that may as well be a mockery to the actual god or showing the devil being the god in Witcher universe... Which also makes sense...

I think it is possible to deduce it without knowing this, but there is an old Polish legend about a noble man who sold his soul to the devil, in exchange for knowledge and power. Trying to outsmart the devil, he added to the contract that his soul would only be devoured if his foot stands in Rome. He obviously never went to Rome, yet after years past he let down his guard and stummbled into a tavern, called "Rome". So Olgierd's story was clearly inspired by this. Wchich would make O'dim the embodiment of the devil int the Witcher's world and explain all of his exploits and him likeing to tempt people into bad decisions. When i first realized it in the game it made me very excited becouse the character went from an evil trickster, maybe a very strong mage, to the most powerfull and evil beeing you ever encountered.

I mean I think this is kinda spot on cause O'Dimm doesn't come off as a bad entity at all while dealing with Geralt. Aside from killing the guy with a spoon. But I believe Geralt has killed people to prove a point or to be noticed as well. In the books (the last wish) Geralt killed 3 people in a pub to get the attention of the king foltest so he could take on the contract to cure the striga.

We've too little information to confirm his character. That's his most striking appeal in my opinion: All we know is hearsay, except for the empirical facts of him being A) powerful, B) engaging in voluntary contracts and C) killing, but not torturing, random individuals who draw his ire (such as the guy at the bar who got his brain ventilated). Only C is ethically condemnable, though nowhere near the cruelty of humans. Aside from that, viewing O'Dimm as either evil or good follows a Christian fallacy: Describing an entity as good does not make it good, and vice-versa. It's merely hearsay, which only a juvenile mind would find convincing. Perhaps the strongest indication of O'Dimm's evil is his use of a childlike riddle to test Geralt. Such a decision can only be a childish whim, as riddles are in no way a meaningful indication of a person's character or effective intelligence. Of course, we can chalk that up to the folklore memes which The Witcher is built upon, but nonetheless it is an indication of a petty and opportunistic character.

God I loved that DLC. It didn't really bring much of anything I hadn't seen before (any deal with the devil tale out there) but there isn't anything wrong with that, it was awesome. I'd never seen THOSE characters in that situation and it was fun to do so.

In my opinion Gaunter is a higher demon, more along the lines of Baal or Moloch from ancient Jewish and Christian text. He has every character trait of a demon, negative influences and thoughts, vast knowledge, abilities to grant you whatever you want in exchange for your soul, etc etc. you said it yourself, he can’t directly impact the world like God can, but he can influence it into a negative outcome, like Satan or a demon.
@Thanhatos
@Thanhatos Год назад
Still, he can impact the world if he wants it... Remember the spoon in the eye in the middle of the day in the inn. That moment was frightening. Because until that precise moment, we are made to believe he can't really act by himself. But oh boy he can really do !! And throught stopping time itself ! It's just not the way he acts, but he can. Only if it's fun to him.

@TheSpicyLeg
@TheSpicyLeg Месяц назад
Gaunter is not a god, no, or at least, not as we understand god as in the Abrahamic religions. He is neither omniscient nor omnipresent. If he was omniscient, there is no way Geralt could outwit him. And if he was omnipresent, he could break his own contracts without penalty. Gaunter is subject to rules, albeit not many. Mainly, he apparently cannot violate the terms of his own contracts. Secondly, he apparently cannot directly lie to the other party. While he certainly uses legalism and wordplay to fulfill conditions of a contract in a manner they were clearly not intended, he doesn’t actually ever deceive anyone by not fulfilling the terms in some manner. He reminds me of a trickster, including the passing cruelty. Tricksters delighted in causing people to “hoist themselves on their own petard”. Or giving people that the trickster felt was too smug or arrogant their just deserts, or serving people an ironic fate. For example, in Supernatural the Winchester brothers encounter a trickster that would manipulate time and reality to play cruel games on people. The trickster put Sam and Dean in a Groundhog Day situation in which Dean would die each day, only for Sam to wake up the next day with Dean alive and in the same hotel. Sam would remember each day, but Dean wouldn’t, and no matter what Sam did to try and avoid whatever killed Dean the previous day, something else would kill him. Sam would try each day to convince Dean they were in some kind of time loop, only to have Dean die in some convoluted and unlikely method anyway. It only ended after Sam figured out the trickster himself was a guy that was in the diner where they’d eat breakfast, because he ordered something different after all the times of ordering the same thing. The trickster agreed to stop the loop and let the brothers go, only to have Dean get shot and killed the next day. There was no loop, but Sam became so morose and bitter that the trickster lost the fun. The trickster was also passing cruel, for example, throwing a guy into a black hole who claimed they didn’t exist. Just very… familiar.

@stars-and-clouds
@stars-and-clouds Год назад
Gaunter is evil bc he feeds on other's misery with glee and pushes them into their worst selves. If a hero is someone who brings out the best in people, a villain brings out the worst and that's why Gaunter is a villain. The whole "I just watch people ruin themselves" is a bullshit excuse so he feels less trivial about himself but he is just a bully. People wouldn't have been ruined if he didn't push them into ruin. We all have potential for good and bad and Gaunter purposefully brings out the worst in people for his own amusement. Definition of evil.
@Thanhatos
@Thanhatos Год назад
Ok with you, but I will add it's also the same definition for a god. A lot of the more or less 3 000 gods of humans are kind of evil, petty, childlike. No matter if there are from a pantheon or just one. They all share the power to ruin lives, and to act in that sens whenever they see it if for themselves.
