Pulitzer Prize-winning author Stacy Schiff visited Google's office in Cambridge, MA to discuss her book, "The Witches: Salem, 1692".
It began in 1692, over an exceptionally raw Massachusetts winter, when a minister's daughter began to scream and convulse. It ended less than a year later, but not before 19 men and women had been hanged and an elderly man crushed to death. "The Witches: Salem, 1692" puts a story we thought we knew into an entirely different light.
Stacy Schiff is the author of "Véra (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov)", winner of the Pulitzer Prize; "Saint-Exupéry", Pulitzer Prize finalist; "A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America", winner of the George Washington Book Prize; and "Cleopatra: A Life".

She's a talented writer, with elegant prose. Some non-fiction books are a treat to read, others a chore. She belongs to the Edward Gibbon-style history writer: perfect word-choice, nicely flowing sentences bringing everything together. Cheers.

I have always been fascinated by this topic, from a young age. I do genealogy and recently found out that my Putnam ancestors were very involved in this. I enjoyed the authors talk. I respect her as an author and person and would not think to judge her. I just purchased her book and am eager to read it.

The Google Office in Cambridge, MA Challenge: Come talk about your latest book while we hold a boisterous COCKTAIL PARTY just off-screen. Regardless, this is a great book on the subject.

Love this lecture by Stacy; I've wondered how the Salem witch trials could have happened. She's a fantastic writer and researcher. I can see why she is award-winning. Bizarre about how odd things happen, when engaging this topic.

Yikes. When authors speak. She needs to calm right down. And she needs a better comedy writer.

She’s not a comedian. She’s a scholar. A damn talented one at that. Her lectures are interesting and informative. You sound bitterly jealous.

@@thereisnocarolinHR Hey I love the logic! Because she doesn't present herself well I'm jealous. Yikes! Please! Tell me you're not breeding! As well the total lack of a sense of humor. Psst. You'll find life a whole lot easier if you develop one. Just a thought. Toodles!

@@babyirene3188 If you think tearing down someone sharing their life’s work is having “a sense a humor”, I feel really bad for anyone forced to know you. And you’ve clearly never achieved anything notable, I can tell by your totally by the numbers, insecure response to criticism and your lack of basic comprehension of what authors even do. Maybe take some night classes and get a little more self respect?? Your hatred for yourself is evident to strangers on the internet. Just saying. TOODLES.

@@thereisnocarolinHR I believe in life you will find perspective is a beautiful even necessary thing. And considering others' points of view can be quite valuable. I know that's not a popular sentiment in 2021. But it will be again one day. We have the misfortune of living through an era where criticism equals hatred. And -being super blunt- that attitude almost always comes from those who don't read. Ah these magical times.

@@babyirene3188 You responded to my reminder that she is not a comedian with “I hope you aren’t breeding”. You need to do some self reflecting and practice what you preach. Until then, you’re just another boomer laughing stock.

Ms. Shiff should stick to writing. She cannot speak.

Brendon Hill I sentence you to watch this video five consecutive times. For the rest, avoid this video and check out Ms. Schiff's book. Maybe it's great. I won't bother because her marketing stinks. I would be reminded of this terrible lecture every time I were to pick it up. Writing and speaking are two separate skills, only tangentially related. Ms. Schiff cannot speak, so avoiding this video is recommended.

+Northern Bohemian Realist Sorry but your statement is out of line. This is an excellent talk. What's wrong with the way she speaks?!

+Giada C. The author speaks as well as most writers. Not very. Listen to the audio. It sounds like her head is going to explode.

Baby Irene is right on the money. Speaking and writing are two separate skills and rarely do they meet in one person. Off the top of my head, I can think only of Fran Lebowitz, Socrates of our time.
