OSCAR WINNER:Best Song - "Over The Rainbow"Best ScoreIn this classic musical fantasy, Judy Garland stars as Dorothy Gale, a young Kansas farm girl who dreams of a land "somewhere over the rainbow." Dorothy's dream comes true when she, her dog, Toto, and her family's house are transported by a tornado to a bright and magical world unlike anything she has seen before. Unfortunately, she makes a mortal enemy of a wicked witch when the house falls on the hag's sister. Now, befriended by a scarecrow without a brain, a tin man with no heart and a cowardly lion -- and protected by a pair of enchanted ruby slippers -- Dorothy sets off along a yellow brick road for the Emerald City to beseech the all-powerful Wizard of Oz for his help to return home. Winner of Academy Awards for the classic song, "Over The Rainbow" and for "Best Score," the family classic also received an Oscar nomination for "Best Picture." A special Oscar for "the best juvenile performer of the year" was awarded to Judy Garland.

Billie Burke took me by surprise when I realized years ago that she was 54 when she played the role of Glinda, the witch of the North. She just looked in her late 30s when I saw her for the first time. Not only did she look beautiful but she had a very soft voice. I miss her so much.

@@MaskedMan66 Sorry, does not compute. The munchkins laughed when Dorothy said that witches were old and ugly. Therefore they knew about witches and that Glenda was a beautiful good witch. Plus, Glenda knew that only bad witches were ugly, so she could have told the munchkins that Dorothy must be a good witch without having to ask the question. Which was my point-- there was no need to ask that question.I know it's not an earth shattering point- I just like movie dialog to make sense.

Billy Burke was born in Baltimore but was baptis’d in Westminster Abbey in London so her parents must have had connexions with Queen Victoria (c. 1889); she married Florenz Ziegfeld in NYC and was famous for her high pitch’d squeak and mix’d clipp’d (fake) British Accent; she would often be late to the set (her scenes were shot in Dec 1938 through the end of Jan 1939) and was once given a dressing-Down by Director Victor Fleming to which he replied ‘You’re BROWBEATING ME!’ and feign’d crying to get sympathy from him...her signature red hair made quite a sensation on Broadway and later in Hollywood
@MaskedMan66
@MaskedMan66 4 года назад
Just FYI, the past tense of "baptize" is "baptized." Also, it's "pitched," "mixed," "clipped," and "feigned." Funny thing, regarding that famous red hair of Billie's you mentioned: in "Wizard," wardrobe covered that long, red, curly hair with a long, red, curly wig. Go figure!

Yes when I was a kid watching Judy Garland, Toto, and the rest of the cast of THE WIZARD OF OZ...my jaw dropped at what appeared to me as my mother's part in the show: Glinda could double my mother; and visa-versa. Dorothy's attachment to Toto in Oz. Does seem reflected by Marilyn's attachment to her car Cynthia---OR: I was a kid waiting yearly to watch Judy Garland, Toto and the rest of the Wizard of Oz cast. But, at one point of the show it looked like my mom was in it, she was holding a magic wand that was star topped (BILLIE BURKE). NORTH WITCH: Glinda

"Anne With an E" is a travesty which has Montgomery turning in her grave. As for "Wicked" and that other abomination you mentioned, they have nothing to do with Oz. You see, Dorothy can't die. For real stories about the "real" Oz and the "real" Dorothy Gale, I suggest the following: 1. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (L. Frank Baum, 1900) 2. The Marvelous Land of Oz (L. Frank Baum, 1904) 3. Ozma of Oz (L. Frank Baum, 1907) 4. Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz (L. Frank Baum, 1908) 5. The Road to Oz (L. Frank Baum, 1909) 6. The Emerald City of Oz (L. Frank Baum, 1910) 7.
