The Wolf OR-7 Expedition: 1200 Miles to Explore Human and Wolf Coexistence

The Wolf OR-7 Expedition team retraced by bicycle and on foot the approximate route taken by a GPS - collared wolf called Wolf OR-7. The wolf was born in NE Oregon and in 2011 left his pack and dispersed South to find new territory. He became the first known wolf in California in nearly 90 years, and he is still out there...
Follow six adventurers as they retrace the route taken by a GPS-collared Oregon wolf. Their mission is to explore human-wolf coexistence and meet the people along Wolf OR-7's route who now find themselves in wolf country.

Thank you for this movie! I live just outside Ashland, Oregon. I've my own small "pack", all Alaskan Malamutes, and one of our regular adventures are day hikes, and the occasional weekend camp-out in the Siskiyou Mountains...all the time knowing OR-7 might be close-by. Full moon camp outs I always get the "Mals" to do sing-alongs, lifting our heads to howl into the night...my silent prayers go out to OR-7, and his pack that they continue to roam these amazing mountains undisturbed by man. Here it is 2019 almost 2020 and as far as anyone knows OR-7 is still alive up there somewhere in the Siskiyou's! Ah'woooooooooooo! my Brother. Aho!

Frank Wolf We just got a wolf on Trail Cam close to the Table Rocks vicinity. :) ODFW was forwarded about 20 photos, close up and clear. They said it’s the first set of photos they have received in our area. They of course have plenty of reports, but now some great pics !

I am truly blessed. I thought I would never see wolves in Oregon! Well I have seen them and they are amazing. What’s incredible is that OR-7 and his mate have made their home/den in basically my backyard WOOHOO!!! I see them at least once a week from a distance and I never try to interact with them because 1 they’re wild creatures and 2 I don’t want them getting used to humans for their safety. Cheers mates and happy trails

I watched it on TV and I bought the DVD and the book and yes it's very good I love the book cause you feel like your part of it. I remember Jamie Dutcher cause when she got the call she worked at the Washington National Zoo and me and my husband took the kids there about two weekends a month. My daughter always wanted to hang out in the Giant Panda house and that's when Ling Ling Hsing Hsing were there but I also like shows that are like OR-7 where you actually learn where the animal was and can formulate why they would do that.

Together we decided to google to learn more and now we have just watched the movie. Thank you very much for sharing your adventure with the world! It's very hearttouching and made us thinking more of the wild nature around us! Sending our best wishes to the team!

I’m white and from Europe as in born there and I have respect for nature. In fact the small town I’m from is full of people who respect nature. You don’t have to be native american to respect nature. I’ve seen reservations full of native Americans who have no respect for nature at all. If you want as many people as possible around the world to respect nature you should resist the urge to make broad racist generalisations as much as possible. There are many ways to respect nature and most have nothing to do with native americans.

@@prepperjonpnw6482 " I’m white and from Europe "...and here you are calling a person racist while watching a documentary about how wolves were hunted to near extinction, not realizing how Indigenous peoples were hunted to near extinction on our lands, too. Have you ever considered that those native peoples you denigrate had their connection to our Earth Mother severed in the same way our sisters & brothers the wolves had? I'm Blackfoot and have never seen groups of people dedicated to mending the broken Sacred Hoop of our human existence on our lands, but I have seen many, many ignorant comments like yours. BTW, I live on a former rez I had to buy & restore to it's "nearly original" condition, not a chemical has been used on this land in 33 yrs. I had to learn from the land & wise elders, how to do everything as my ancestors did, as my mother was put in Indian re-education camp as a 7 yr old child . She had the "savage" beaten out of her & hated her own beautiful heritage. How about teaching those you despise rather than punching down on hunted humans while watching videos of restoring wolves who were decimated by other thoughtless, smug humans?

This was nothing but a group of City Dwellers making an EGO documentary about THEMSELVES. They didn't REALLY have to rough it and as TheKutis66 points out, they don't know diddly about BUGS or even how to camp...This is what you see in people that have been BOOK TAUGHT about the outdoors and the animals...Not one thing about this was REAL WORLD and any ACTUAL Active Outdoors Person watching will just have a great laugh. They are all privileged and have not one clue about the wild wolf and the impact it has on the natural animals. I saw this as only about their trek and very, very little about the WOLF.

Interesting way of looking at this very complex issue, and thanks for gaining multiple perspectives. It is indeed great that we as a species are realizing that we need all species to be a truly balanced ecosystem. ----- On a side note, you could have saved yourself a fair amount of time and worry with putting slime in your tubes. The white stuff is better than the green stuff in my opinion, but truly amazing--- especially with the goat head thorns you were dealing with. I have had this stuff in my tubes and pulled out 15-20 goat head thorns out of one tube and heard the hissing air coming out, and resealed the tire simply by putting the bike upside down and spinning the wheel a couple times. Anyways, something to check out if you had not already known of it. Thanks for sharing a great story/ Cheers

I have lost relatives over the discussion of wolves.. personaly I think they should be let back into the eco system , once they are established then they can be controlled by hunting. Heck odds are a tic bite will kill more people than a dog. And your beloved car kills more than anything .feet we support and build them every day.

Too lose a relationship with family from wanting the preservation of a species is terribly pathetic of those with that line of thinking. Too too many people with that narrow-minded self serving attitude. My friend whom is a former pastor is such a disappointment to me as he's very judgemental and incredibly opinionated about so much that he's not knowledgeable of yet disgustingly wilfully ignorant. @@juliehenderson1672 that is exactly what I mean and I can recognize it from my own country here in Scandinavian, I am a native Scandinavian, and in my religion the wolf is a sacred animal the alfather best friends (The wolf gere & freke) just as with the native American, farmers and new Scandinavians and many Christians see our wolves as enemies and when I see them being slaughtered it makes me powerless and sad. but fortunately our politicians have made a compromise with farmers for compensation for the animals the wolf hunts and eats, the problem is a little less now, but we must fight for the wolves worldwide. in hope the alfather protect them so that there will always be wolves to guide us native Scandinavian safely to the 9 gates to our dead. the wolf is my guardian of Nordic mythology.

I saw a wolf in Oregon in 1972. SE of Burns. Coming up from Winnemucca on my way to Portland. I was driving my '63 bug on a descending series of switchbacks through forest. I had turned my engine off and was coasting. Lonely road, had only see 2 other vehicles in a couple hundred miles. Came around a sharp curve and it was in the road 50 yards ahead. Big grey wolf. It looked at me and was gone, jumping the embankment and disappearing into the forest. Too bad I didn't tell anybody about it. I didn't know then that they were thought to be non-existent in Oregon. Learned that years later. C'est la vie.

There are so many mistakes, by a laughable but likeable crew. What scared me most was when they would go over creeks of white water, with the hip belts of their packs still strapped on. That is a very easy way to drown. Opposite to, but akin to, when people out on boats either don't have their life jackets on, or even if so, they are not zipped up. Have you ever tried to fasten a life jacket, once in the water? Have you ever tried to release your hip belt, in the same condition? Neither, is very easy to do.

The locals use no pop tires and goop filler sprays cans . If they ride off road every thing poops tires over there. I got a cuz In that had a arrowheads pop a tire one deer season. What's the odds.

The idea of retracing a wolf track & possibly it's population of it, really is a good idea, to check out which areas the pack or loner goes through, must have been an amazing time, I sure do hope that the loner or pack did gave a glimp of it/them , I sure do wish that people in Europe would start to accept that wolves are needed to restore the balance of nature in case of wildlife and plants as well, Mostly in Europe it's the Hunter that is wiping out the wildlife pregnant wildlife or not they kill it and it's just the rush for killing the wildlife that they've got in common in Europe especially in Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, The population of grouse, dear, Bore, turkeys, is all below a minimum, you could say it's going to be extinct in the next 3 years. It is a sad way how hunters are controlled by the services they work for,, Take care all of you, Des

I mean to be fair.... It specifically says it's not about finding OR-7 or any wolves. It's about the possible journey and all the obstacles one possibly took in a short time. I think they mostly are right. I mean sure you can have attacks on people, much more on livestock. Mountain lions pose a GREATER risk, without provoking. Two people are riding bikes, attacks person in front, than person in back. 🤷‍♂️ Also I think numbers can be a bunch of bullshit. That's how companies work their employees to death or fucking mental. Because the environment isn't seen..... therefore a number can justify it. ALOT if not everything is numbers, and sure it provides and paints a visual but it's not always correct.

They should obviously do what's best for ecology and the ranchers and hunters follow the law pertaining to endangered species. Enforce the law effectively like any other law.
