This woman is thought to be the “mother” of all humans alive today. Seems like a big claim for scientists to make. So how do they know this? The simple explanation is that when an egg is fertilized by a sperm, the DNA from the father and mother join together in a process known as recombination. Certain DNA is only passed down from the mother or father. All mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) come exclusively from the mother, as an exact copy. Over time however, there will occur predictable mutations to mtDNA. Biologists can compare samples from individuals to determine how closely they are related- the fewer these predictable mutations, the closer the relationship. The predictability of these mutations also allows biologists to estimate the time at which a certain mutation (i.e. ancestor) lived. Beginning in 1987, several studies have been conducted that show all humans alive today have the same female ancestor and she lived approximately 200,000 years ago.

No where did he show an African woman and her child which is what she would have looked like. It's sickening. I'm so glad you posted this 4 years ago. This is why so many people are what my son calls, "intelligently ignorant." Also Y-chromosome Adam has now redated to 163k and 260k years ago and he lived in Africa as well. So he's was much closer in age to "Eve" then we originally thought.

"they supply an enzyme. more accurately a co-enzyme" wtf dude that is just plain wrong. a co-enzyme is not an enzyme. a co-enzyme can be anything that binds with an enzyme to more efficiently produce substrate. an enzyme is a protein, a co-enzyme can be anything from a single atom like iron to complex molecules like ATP.

Protip: Don't sign up for a DNA Sequencing service if you don't want your real identity and DNA being associated and being Sold to various customers. Gene sequencing is very expensive so the reason it's so cheap from these companies is that they make money selling customers access to their DNA database instead. You are paying, but you are still the product.

I would actually really enjoy a sci fi film about these people. Their lives, how the times were, not knowing how huge of an impact they would make on the world. It could be very poetic and inspiring. The reason for the sci fi would either be a time mirror where someone observes their lives or time travel in general. I think the mirror would be more heartbreaking because they can only watch but can't change it (like a more depressing Deja Vu).

Mitochondrial DNA is not passed mother to daughter, it is passed mother to children. If a woman has only a son, her mitochondrial DNA is not actually "lost" as it continues to reside in the son, though he cannot pass it on.

A single genetic human progenitor is not actually guaranteed if you allow for the possibly of compatible mutations occurring more than once within a population. This can result in the common ancestor being from a previous species we evolved out of and thus arguably not a man or woman. EDIT: Chances are very slim though

I did my ancestry test and it confirmed a long family myth about our ancestry plus some other good stuff, i even found a second cousin and it was spot on, i would not complain, you do have the option of opting out from giving them permission to use your DNA for other purposes other than to find other relatives and your ancestry.

It's not that the mother doesn't pass on her mitochondrial DNA to her sons, it's that her sons don't pass on their mitochondrial DNA to their offspring. Depending on the trait, there's some most recent common ancestor for every gene, and they're not necessarily the same generation. The math gets kind of confusing, but it has a certainty to it, every gene has an ancestor that it differs from, all the way back to the first DNA sequence.

For those who are saying they'll never be tested for privacy/legal reasons, I have two points: watch this video; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U3EEmVfbKNs.html, and 2) realize that your DNA is just about the easiest thing to get from you - take a drink, its on the glass; its in your hair, all through your clothes, and stopping anywhere for a few hours will leave it in that place, if someone is really desperate for your DNA. Getting a social security number is technically more difficult.

Great video as ever! Just a tiny tiny nit-pick, 1:30 a co-enzyme isn't a type of enzyme, it's by definition a non-protein component that actual enzymes need for their reactions, so saying "an enzyme, more accurately a co-enzyme" is quite misleading. Sorry!! Just done my biochemistry degree final exams, buzzing with knowledge still :)

200000 years? Where do you have this information from? According to Thomas J. Parsons' scientifical publication in Nature Genetics in 1997 (called "A High Observed Substitution Rate In The Mitochondrial DNA Control Region") this Mitochondrial Eve lived about 6000 years ago.

The occurrence of a mutation can't be predicted; the average rate can, but not what the mutation will be. However, having many mitochondrial genome sequences can be used to “work backwards" to determine roughly when any specific, currently existing mutation arose (ie. If a bunch of genomes have the same mutation as far back as 2000 years ago, but then no one has it, you can guess that mutation arose 2000ish years ago).

so she had the strongest genetic material she was the most virile and had a higher succsess rate of pregnancy and she passed it on to her kids and so on makes sense and at some point all the other familys eather became gay, became infertile castrated or had a medical condition stopping kids, they died before they had kids, or remained single there for in all cases there genetic material never got passed on while her family never had the problems in their dna they were strong and smart so they didnt die as often and basicly she won the genetic lottery.

y Chromosome Adam is preserved in the DNA record, because the y chromosome is unique. (I use the lowercase y, in Xy because of the relative sizes, and shape of the y chromosome.) It's counterpart is always an X chromosome from the mother (Who doesn't have a y chromosome) which it can't recombine with. So, the only source of genetic drift in that Chromosome is through mutation. The X chromosome, however is duplicate in females, so it can recombine, or mutate. This makes the Mutations more difficult to track, separate from recombination, so Mitochondrial DNA (which is not recombinant) is used to track the matrilineal line instead.

Like it or not, this backs up the Biblical story of the flood. Male DNA would have bottlenecked at Noah, all the males in the ark were his sons, so genetic variation for men starts with Noah. The women on the ark were the wife of Noah and the wives of his 3 sons, none of the 3 younger women were daughters of Noah's wife, and therefore would have a variety of genetic mutations in their mitochondrial DNA stretching back to the Biblical Eve and explaining why the different ages of the genetic "eve" and the genetic "adam" would appear so different.
