To finish the exterior of my shop, I need to make a garage door for the shed section. After this episode I can cross it from my to do list because it's done.

Wouldn't it have been much easier to cut it into sections before final assembly?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 9 лет назад
+Matthias Wandel I wanted the grain to flow between each section. The assembly would had been easier but I was aiming for the nice grain flow look.

Great looking door! When making the raised panels, could you have hogged off the bulk of the material by cutting a bevel with the panel turned on edge on the table saw?

What's that noise, is there some sort of pulsing interference in the audio signal, or did you put music in? If it's music, leave it out. not needed.

Alain, did you cut all your domino's to 140mm exactly (09:40)? They are actually manufactured to 136mm to allow for glue. Excellent project none the less, keep up the good work!

+Neil Kightley I cut them the sime length as a precut domino, so if you say it's 136 then it'a 136. I used a beech one to setup my stop.

@chrisis9030 9 лет назад
+Alain Vaillancourt Eh bien M. Vaillancourt, I myself think M. Wandel is next to being a genius. His way of of creating such powerful and functional things with the least of means is awesome and unique as far as I know. He wants to show - - maybe show off a little, too - how creative he can be or perhaps anyone else who dares, but he is an engineer and probably a talented one too. You on the other hand are a crafsman with a vision and a drive and a plan, which you have been realizing over the last months. Whereas Matthias operates via his brain, you seem to operate via your heart. Both appeal to me me a lot. Let’s not compare eachother with another, I’m nowhere near the level of makers/woodworkers you guys are, I have a less than tiny shop where I do my simple stuff with my young son. You are the one to be loved and Matthias is the one to be admired.

I forgot you could do a raised panel on a table saw, Thanks. That door Looks beautiful But its got to weigh a ton. Its ok your springs would help balance the weight and if you like a powered opener would lift it.. If you don't like the Idea of a lift, they do make one that will mount on the doors wall and just turn the Spring bar to raise and lower the door. This way you don't have a motor and bar in the middle of the shop to deal with.
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 7 лет назад
Yes this door is heavy, I can't lift if without the springs and since I reused the old bearing, it's still hard to lift half of them are broken and lost their ball bearings inside. But I didn't know about the wall mounted door opener, thanks
@palmer3977
@palmer3977 9 лет назад
Yes Alain it looks like the dominos were slightly too long, did the joints come together in the dry fit? if so it could be the epoxy preventing the domino's seating fully.
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 9 лет назад
+palmer3977 Maybe you're right it might be the epoxy. The dominoes are a little shorter than both mortices.

How long will they retain the same color they are now? Won't they gray overtime? Or is there some way to prevent this?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 5 лет назад
Short answer; not long... The door changed colour alright, it's a matter of fact all my shop changed colour, the walls, the windows and all the doors. At least from the inside they look great :) But no wood turned grey, I don't know if it's because of the oil preservative I put on them? No they all went a clear colour, yes the sapele from the front doors and the cedar from the garage door and windows are now almost the same colour as the pine walls; a pale pinks colour. I wanted to re-brush another coat of preservative last summer, but I can't figure why I ended up not having time for that, too much stuff to do. Well next year.

Alain, I would have clamped both sides of the door as that would have eliminated the gaps in the joints on one side. Clamps tend to put more pressure on the side that they are placed on giving less even pressure from one side to the other. But all in all a very nice job well done 😀

@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 9 лет назад
+Patrick Melchior Every body have the same problem with this sprayer; from time to time the hose unplug itself from the gun. At this exact moment the finish wich is inside the gun drop on the floor, so if you are spraying and your gun is on top of your work piece this will drop on your piece, not fun.. When this happen I wipe the excess. This happened on average about every hour, or maybe it's only my average... Otherwise it works fine, my finish are way beter than when I was just using a normal spraygun and my compressor.

Out of curiosity, how much would it cost in time/materials to make a door rather than buying a similar roll up door?
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 9 лет назад
+Ben's Collection and Sundry I bought the wood last year, Lucky for me because our Canadian money lost 20% of it's value, so It would had cost me 20% this year. But still it was expensive $1,300 plus at least 30 hours of labour. But you have to consider if a cheap luan door is what you want? Or a nice solid wood door?
@RetroVintageItems27
@RetroVintageItems27 9 лет назад
No, I didn't mean to criticize. Part of making your own door is the art of it, as well as making it the style you like.
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 9 лет назад
+Ben's Collection and Sundry I know that you didn't criticize, sory if I sounded like that, But what I ment is some people would rather buy a dresser from Ikea because it doesn't cost much, it's ok, But I rather make my own wich will last for generations, but will cost me probably twice the amount of money in wood than the Ikea version. All the door I made for my shop cost me a bundle but I will enjoy them for a long time. Wood is so expensive probably even a metal insulated door would had cost less. But it's not as enjoyable as a wooden one.

@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker
@LgosseuxDbois-TheWoodpecker 9 лет назад
+David Handley I used a very slow set epoxy with a working time of more than an hour. My "to go" glue Tite bond III has only 10 minutes of working time. Gluing a door takes WAY more than 10 minutes, it's why on all my doors I've usedonly slow set epoxy.
@tr48092
@tr48092 9 лет назад
wood glue only has a working time of 15-20 minutes. epoxy gives you a working time of at least an hour. if he had used wood glue, the glue would have been too set before he got everything clamped.
