David Thomas agreed. Post Brexit hysteria shows. This the northern working class were blamed for Brexit. Called thick racists. When in fact Home Counties Tories were big supporters of leaving the EU. The working class English the least empowered people get the blame for the mess created by others.

@@TrueGritProductions The 'middle-class' are an interest group, or subculture, not a social class imo. Besides, wealth does not in itsself define social class. It doesn't matter how many cars you own, or how much you have in the bank, that doesn't make you even gentry.

@@Pooknottin the "middle class" is exactly a wealth and mode-of-work defining expression.
@Pooknottin
@Pooknottin Год назад
@@vornamenachname594 Your definition is arbitrary. The concept of a middle class actually has its origins in early Victorian France. The 'culture of the living room'. A subculture of snobbish commoners who gave undue importance to the collection of tasteless frippery. So, not much has changed. There is no 'middle class', unless you define it as a social interest group, or subculture.

Something poignant about the poem. Alan Partiridge is this anti pc character with all these stereotypes about working class people but that last line of the poem shows that for all that, the character isn't "done" in a mean spirited way and its coming from a place of appreciating the humanity in people- like the humour that comes from people's "faults" in the Alan Partridge shows and in other Steve Coogan comedies makes them more likable if anything. Like all the working class people Alan runs into. Alan can be spiteful, selfish, spineless but he's not an evil character and he's so funny.

In all of history the working class of England have had about fifteen good years, say 48 to 65 or thereabouts.

It's either a great satire of modern news reporting, or a masterclass poem. I can't tell which.

Billy Billy Soccer was coined by the England Football Team captain in 1899 as a shortening of "association football". America stole it.

but the point is soccer is NEVER a word associated in British football culture, simply because there is no other logical, reasonable use of the word 'football' for a sport. He actually did spoil this using the word 'soccer'

As empty of sincerity as Alan Partridge is (which is actually what is so funny about is character, and this clip) the threadbare old view that the so called underclass (or lumpenproletariat as Marx called it) are lazy scroungers without hopes and dreams, is totally unfounded, and based purely on the ignorance of people who haven't experienced it first hand. I've met many people in the so called underclass, and they just want a bite of the cherry like everyone else. When the means to a sense of fulfillment or success in life is blocked, people can become downtrodden into depression, addiction, and low self-esteem, and crime. Cohen (1955) noticed deviant behaviour in underprivileged youths was actually a type of 'status frustration' and that frustration created a type of criminal subculture. It's pretty sad when someone is honest with you enough to tell you that they don't feel they have any worth or value in society, and can't see their way out of it through the means others have been afforded. But that's the truth whether people like it or not. It's a lot easier to look down on people and say, "they choose that way of life because they're good-for-nothing scumbags". It makes us feel better about ourselves, and gives us someone to pin the blame on for society's problems. Or another one you hear, "I know a guy who came from poverty who is now a millionaire". That's great, good on them I say, but that's not a reality for everyone, and not the answer to a problem created by a system that shits on it's own brothers and sisters so it can get rich. Poverty and inequality is created by the wealthy, but no one will tell you that, because they want you to blame those who can't fight back.

Niko ....as someone in their fifties it has saddened me how the media has heaped abuse on those less fortunate for the last few decades. I think it is a sinister campaign t divide and rule. Don't look at the rich man with 90 per cent of the cakes...blame the bloke who is stealing the crumbs from your 10 per cent. ....

Textbook Partridge. I like this new version of Patridge. Alan would have aged and adapted. He is now portrayed more like Steve Coogan himself perhaps, as Steve has commented in interviews. Coogan seems more at ease now he has done more serious acting. Like the film Philomena. Patridge may be more comfortable to play as a character maybe and more opportunities to subtly comment and still be humurous. This clip seems to me quite movingly about Manchester, as i lived there, and every British city. Aha!
