Unpaid internships should be ILLEGAL. If you are working you should be paid for it. End. Of. Story.
@marschruschrybul6247
@marschruschrybul6247 5 лет назад
“fun“ fact from Germany: unpaid internships are illegal here. Unfortunately that means that companies will not hire interns anymore unless those internships are absolutely mandatory for something like university degrees (with very very few exceptions). And most degrees don't require more than one three week internship, so you can imagine the kind of real life experience that uni graduates here have. However companies still require a certain amount of work experience for you to even be invited to a job interview. (Exceptions to this conundrum are jobs that require two university degrees and an additional practical education in fields like law, teaching, psychology, pharmacy and medicine- in those cases the government will pay for the practical degree)

My therapist had to DRILL this out of my head. I was addicted to studying until 1-2am and was exhausted from not sleeping. Along with insomnia from anxiety, I couldn’t sleep because I was always thinking of assignments due, test dates, deadlines, etc. I drove myself crazy. I told her that I always fear that I could be using my sleep time to do “productive” things. Finally, my therapist told me that sleep isn’t optional, and most of all: sleep is the most productive thing to do for your brain. I now HAVE to get at least 8 hours of sleep to function. I’ve actually been doing a lot better grade-wise because I don’t feel like I’m going to have a mental breakdown any moment.

I agree college is hard but drifting away from friends is naturally what happens as you get older, college or not. I dropped out 4 years ago, and see my best friends (pretty much my only friends lol) maybe once a month if I’m lucky, usually once every couple months. Your true friends will be the ones you can go months or even years without seeing and pick up right where you left off. It’s nice to see your friends all the time, but with true friends you don’t need to see them everyday to stay friends.

Also sometimes I just had to see things from a good perspective, like appreciating that I had the opportunity to learn and be around interesting smart people every day. I do love learning and though it’s overwhelming just look at it like everything you learn might help you one day and isn’t humanity just so cool? It’s hard to be like that when you’re depressed but changing the way you’re thinking about it can help a lot. Of course crying to my friends and family every once in a while was therapeutic :) I would also give the advice to take full advantage of the resources at your school. The career center, study abroad, mental health, groups etc. There are so many offices and people to help you and to let you find internships and opportunities. I wish I had just gone into those offices and gotten to know people and had them help me with whatever. I did do a study abroad and it was such a valuable life experience. But I should’ve been going to my professors and the career center and really trying to make connections for jobs after graduation. I was thinking I can just figure it out after I graduate but I wish I had worked on it before I left more. Another thing is I wish I had worked more on my physical health and what I was eating and exercising. I felt I didn’t have time for that but I think it helps a lot for your mental health to work on your physical health. I’m making up for years of bad eating now. Good luck!!! You got this!! Always remember that you’re not alone and there are millions of other people struggling the same way you are. You are not alone! And you’re doing a great thing for yourself so just get it done and don’t give up

Be grateful to wake up healthy and young with all these possibilities ahead of you. Be grateful for the ability to learn and grow. Mindset mindset mindset. Don’t let your self be dragged down by depression. It’s hard I know, I was there, and now I keep myself afloat by sheer power of will and my faith. It gets hard but sometimes if you flip it around for a different perspective it can give you the energy just to make it through the day. Instead of ugh I have to go to class be like yes I get to go to class! It’s cheesy.. I know. Seek help if it gets too hard. Remember that you deserve to be there. You’re smart. You’re capable. You’re worthy. You do your life at your own pace. You’re probably beautiful too. It comes from the inside out. I’m tired ranting now, good night.

I feel like stress and tiredness has become like a mark of honor in America. Americans despise laziness and anything associated with it, and honestly that’s why I think we have such a weird, bad attitude towards obesity, because we see obesity and think “laziness” and we can’t stand laziness. For us, being stressed=success. Stress free life? You must be a lazy free loader and you’re probably taking advantage of MY hard work somehow. At least that’s a mindset I kinda see. I mean think of all those self help books about how to get more done, how to make more money, how to be more efficient, etc. etc. Edit: also want to clarify that I think this is an American thing, not a millennial or boomer thing. Maybe it manifests in different ways for different generations, but I think it’s a cross generational thing.

You know what I notice about this type of discussion? No one ever talks about how colleges need to ease the fuck up on the workload that they give students. Colleges will try to give tips and ideas on how to keep up with everything and highlight the importance of self-care when there's literally no fucking time for it. It's my understanding that the workload has increased, while outside responsibilities or obligations of students have also increased which leads to burnout. This is even spreading to elementary schools, where young kids have anxiety because they feel like they need to live up to this high level of academic standard put upon them. I understand that the job market is more competitive than how it was years ago, but people's mental and physical health are being compromised to a larger degree, and that's an issue. People are just like " oh, well it's expected of us that we are to be burned out, so be it" without maybe being like " hey colleges, CALM DOWN, WE CAN'T BREATHE". idk. Also, in regard to unpaid internships, in Canada, from my experience at my college anyways ( and what I've noticed in other colleges and uni's), our practicums are not paid for, and we are not ALLOWED to make money from these practicums. It's part of the contract. It's ridiculous.

Completely agree about the burnout! I've always called it competitive suffering. Before I changed my major, for some reason, everyone in my previous degree path loved (and I mean *LOVED*) to put other people down and make them feel bad about anything and everything. One example right before a microbio exam: Person 1: I slept so late last night. I think I went to bed at midnight Person 2: Pft midnight. I wish I fucking slept then. Around year two, I decided to stop putting my all into university. Somehow, my grades didn't suffer at all. My GPA remained around 3.4, without studying more than two days for each final, taking zero notes, and never pulling a single all-nighter. Was I top of my class? Nope. But I was in the healthy upper levels. Not to mention most employers aren't going to care about whether you topped your classes in uni. What helped me most was figuring out what the bare minimum I had to do to achieve the best outcome possible. And now I'm done! It might make me seem lazy, but my gosh it was so good for my mental health.

In classes that I can do well in without a lot of effort, I strive for As. If it's a more challenging course in my major, I just strive for getting at least a C (the lowest grade needed to pass and not have to retake the course). If it's a course that's not in my major, I just do what I reasonably can but I don't worry about getting a specific grade. I usually end up getting higher grades in those classes than I expect anyway so I'd say my strategy is working well so far. I'm sure it helps that I got most of the general course requirements done at community college before I entered university.

And my english teacher saw me doing the "i'm about to fall asleep closing my eyes and opening them every 2 seconds", but i wasn't doing it on purpose to get her mad, i loved her a lot she was my favourite teacher and i really didn't have the control to keep myself awake. Then she called me out in front of my whole class and i started bawlling my eyes out. Like crying so hard while my clasmates were trying to talk about their presentation. And the teacher then told me to hold my tears and to stop making so much noice and i really tried. I was embarrasing myself in front of everyone, it wasn't on purpose. And she amde it worse telling me to be silent. Literally since that class and in my way to home i cried all day. I was feeling very tired and i cried mostly ebcause anyone understood how much i worked for my grades. And by the way, i speak spanish. On the topic of certain majors having a bigger workload than others, I HAVE to mention that music majors often get the short end of the stick because people are like "oh it's not that hard, I'm PREMED" but music majors often have HUGE workloads (daily music theory amirite) on top of ensembles, 0 credit classes (like performance attendance), and lowkey taking more classes/ensembles than technically allowed (or at least that's how it was at my school). And all of that is apart from independent practice time, which is probably multiple hours a day if you actually listen to lesson teachers. So shoutout to the overworked music majors stuck doing the MOST & getting eyerolled by the premed students, y'all deserve more respect and way fewer extra requirements.
@tf7602
@tf7602 5 лет назад
I think creative majors are kind of expected to love/live/breathe their chosen course. Doing ensembles and practicing outside of uni is just normal, because that's your passion, isn't it? So the time and effort spent on learning a part for orchestra or a play or creating art pieces can be devalued by thinking: well, that's your hobby, isn't it? It's the same reason, that people always try to get free art from artists. "Because they love art" I mean, even work that you love is still work. Anyways, that's my perspective from the outside. Would be interested if you have seen that kind of reaction from people/profs/fellow students.
@kristenbooks
@kristenbooks 5 лет назад
@T F-- Yeah that's another way people don't really respect it because yes, it's an art form, and yes, musicians wouldn't do it if they didn't enjoy it, but at the end of the day, it's still work just like everyone else's job. People try to get musicians to play for free for "experience" just like with visual artists. But people on the outside are often the only people who see it that way as "doing it because you love your art". Like sure, a musician sees that they're creating art and loves it, but when they're in a practice room for 5 hours a day, running the same thing over and over again to get it perfect, are they doing it because "wow I love my art"? nah. It's work and they're trying to be the best at their job as possible. And tbh the musicians who are the ones creating & running the classes should know better than to give their students huge workloads when they also know the ensemble & performance requirements the students have. The real tea is that music departments need to find a better way to balance the requirements for "academic" music majors (music history, theory, etc) and performance majors because often they're both required to do both equally which isn't good for either.

this!!! the education system is all different in sweden so we have majors in high school in a similar way to college, and the art program is looked down on by everyone in high school all over sweden as being "the lazy program" because we get to have "fun" courses. and yeah, i breathe art, and wouldn't be able to stand high school without it - doesn't mean i don't work my ass off and rubbing my fingers raw by completing paintings by the deadlines and writing art analyses far into the night when i would rather do anything else. and the music/theater ones (we're all in the same class) have it way harder than us arters. they have to spend so much of their free time putting up shows, practicing, making up for classes they had to skip because of recitals, etc. they have extra private lessons in places that don't even match up with the rest of their schedule, even more class they have to catch up to! this is my third and last year of high school, a notoriously tough year for art programmers because of the huge musical my school puts up every year that the arters need to make all the scenography for - and that's on top of other huge projects related to our major. the last couple of months third years are expected to pour all their free time and energy into this production and it's just so weird to me how we get so much slack for it. like i said, i can't imagine working without art (i can actually, i was a technology major and hated it) but that doesn't mean it's not hard. all work is hard.

Once it comes to college, people seem to assume that the ones who are having a hard time are wasting all their time and money partying. You mentioned the homeless college students and immediately I thought "so many people would say they're only homeless because they're partying." It's awful. One time professor even told one of the students to sleep less if they don't have enough time for homework. No wonder that half of the people there droped out or changed their major during first year. Also it's weird thing in our university but they lowkey hate physicists. If you have questions outside of your class you will never find anyone to talk to or if you do they just don't care. I switched to chemisty after my second year 'couse I wasn't in a state to survive four more. I had to start studying chemistry from first year again but I don't regret it. I love this video but when you say "not trying is pretty lame lmao" can I just add that sometimes it's worth not putting in that extra 5% effort to change a B from an A if it means you will be happier, healthier and better rested as a result? As a former chronic overworker, my current uni mindset is to try my best but keep it in perspective. There are times when I think "I could get an A* here, but I'd be sacrificing *insert sleep/food/exercise/happiness* so I am going to stop now." I could overwork and get an A* in one module, but it's honestly better to be a more well-rounded person. I'd rather get all Cs and graduate as a healthy, happy, well-adjusted person. That will benefit my career far more in the longrun than falling into the trap of hustle culture and enter work as an exhausted ex-student burdened with added mental health issues lol. Just my two cents!
@mohamedaminehadji6415
@mohamedaminehadji6415 4 года назад
That's an extremely interesting perspective to me. I'm basically the opposite: I used to study less to be a more well-rounded person and ended up with an equivalent of a B when I knew I could have pulled an all-nighter and get an A instead. My reasoning was exactly the same as yours: I want to overall enjoy life and not kill myself working. However, the further I went to my academic career, the more I felt like this was (considered) a bad attitude. Nobody told it to me directly, but I could see that I was struggling in some classes _because_ I didn't study enough in the previous ones. Of course, the struggle is not significant, but I did feel stupid and somehow guilty when a teacher, and now my supervisor, says something that we are supposed to know, and I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't know it. I'm just scolding my old self by thinking "if I had studied more at that point, I would not struggle today".
@PleaseHelpAllene
@PleaseHelpAllene 4 года назад
Caitlin Montgomery I think she’s just referring to the people who just maybe show up to class and that’s it. I make straight Bs for the same reason you stated, it’s a good grade and I’m not sacrificing my well being. But there are so many of my classmates who just show up on the day of a test and are like “ha I never even opened the book once, I’m just gonna get an F, it’s fine haha” and I’m like “YOU PAID $100s of dollars just for this one class and you aren’t gonna even study for 15 mins?” If you don’t have time for a class then don’t take it, IMO. Part time school is okay too but going full time and then just completely neglecting classes isn’t okay. It wastes so much money and really hurts people in the long run and I think that’s what she meant by people not trying. There’s a difference between barely or not even doing the minimum and choosing to not overwork yourself.

worked full time too and people don't understand how I have loans lol Because I had to pay rent, utilities, food, gas, car loan, books, general school supplies, etc. I wish my entire incomes could have gone to my tuition. Sadly, the job was to survive, not pay for school.

The C’s get degrees thing is actually something that keeps me going. I was a straight A student until I graduated high school and I chose a college program that is not only hard but also doesn’t play to my strengths as a student. So sometimes , for me anyway, a C is as good as an A now bc it’s most often a product of really hard work. I’m still struggling with not equating self worth with grades but I think I’ve taken a big step as a person understanding that as long as I’ve been trying my hardest, those grades are more than good enough, even if my hardest doesn’t lead to the best grade (Also, I am in Greek life and pretty much my sorority is my friend groups and where I get the most support as a student bc there’s so many different levels of experience. But I’m in a sorority that focuses on academics and everyone is in the same types of majors so I’m sure it’s a lot easier for me to make grades a priority than others)

I feel like a lot of people actually fall into the Spoon Theory field since so many develop mental health issues at that stage of their life, i.e. anxiety is very chronic for most people developing it. I mean the whole mental illness is just your body regularly having a fight or flight response and using up energy. Having financial struggles on top of that AND living in a system without good health care (I don't know how you Americans do that) sounds devastating to me.

Hearing anxiety described that way is so validating...even with medication, I've been experiencing major burnout and it doesn't help that my parents have burned the importance of grades into me. I'm at the point where the thought of even looking at my grades makes me feel sick.

Honestly "all-nighters" also become harder the more constant stressors become. The longer we're exposed to stress the less anything motivates you - including working, especially in the face of sleep deprivation. Sigh.

Last semester, I had an internship with one of my teacher (in Haiti teachers are also professionals), we were a group working on a project and we got a little behind because of midterms, presentations etc and that teacher called us and told us that if we have time to eat, sleep, talk to other people we have time to work on the project. Let’s just say that now we are no longer working on that project...

I have two jobs rn (nearly 40 hrs a week in total) and I am also a full time student. Yesterday I nearly passed out at work and had to take a break, but I felt so bad since we were busy. And even with these two jobs, I haven't been able to buy my textbooks yet. Also, thank you for bringing up spoonies. I feel like when I tell people I have a chronic illness and I have no energy left, they probably think I'm just lazy or something.

I was a public health major, and a part of my class’ undergrad project was creating a conversation about food insecurity on our campus. Throughout this project a big realization was that college students are largely untraditional. Meaning they aren’t necessarily coming straight from high school, they aren’t supported by their parents, and they have may have cultural diversities that can prevent success or ease of getting through college in 4 years. Looking at food insecurity really focused on how over worked students are to the point where they have to choose between getting good grades, paying rent, and eating. And this conversation is different when also considering if a student is supporting their family or are considered a large part of their homes income. It’s sad stuff. Even sadder when you present this info to your school’s administrators and they basically shrug and look the other way 👀

I’m in a BFA program at a university and I have ADD and a Ritalin prescription. I can’t stand when people ask if they can buy pills off me because 1. It’s not a prescription that’s easy for me to renew- I have to go to a psychiatrist every time I’m running low to get more 2. I need it to function like a regular human being. With it I just function regularly. If you have it and you don’t have ADD/ADHD you get the upper hand over me, I still have to work twice as hard as you!

I'm very fortunate that my parents can pay for my college in full. As a senior pre-med student with several chronic physical illnesses, I do not think I would have been able to get to this point in my education if I also had to work to pay for basic necessities. It's so hard seeing classmates struggle or drop-out because the amount they have to work to continue their education makes actually learning anything nearly impossible.

third time watching this. i can’t even describe how weird it is to have your life changed by someone who doesn’t know you. you and Ashley’s video literally gave me such clarity that i’m changing my major - and that i’m not a failure for not being able to work 2 jobs and get an honors degree in math. i can’t be good at everything and that’s okay.

You talked about being pre-med and I started laughing. Then i remembered that I am pre-med... It really is a lot all the classes and labs. Lord forbid trying to go straight through with the MCAT. Medical schools want you to volunteer, work, and be a 'real' person with 'real'' life experiences. Perfect GPA. Handle stress well. Then imagine if you go to an Ivy and have Federal Work Study. Dang, it really is a lot.

When you were talking about Jaden’s video and about people making a competition out of not taking care of themselves for school, I think this happens because we are trained to value hard work and sacrifice. So when we compare our own struggles, we get to tell others about what we did in order to succeed. Basically we are saying “Feel pity and admiration for me. I did so much so I would succeed and fight against my obstacles”.

I was a good student in middle and high school, without much stress, so i always thought of myself as smart, and i`ve heard it a lot as well from teachers and other students. But uni destroyed my self-esteem completely. The first year I was really trying so hard, but was barely in the upper-middle of my class. It was frustrating and i sort of 'burned out' and started doing bare minimum required to stay on scholarship. I was focused on school and failed social life - here comes anxiety, social phobia, depression. It`s so frustrating when you do your best, then talk to teachers and feel like the most stupid piece of shit. Hate this 5 years of my life. Yeah, and i`m from Ukraine, liberal arts major, community uni, but i`ve managed to fail even this. Oh, yeah and dorm with 4 people in a room.
