I did everything right. Worked extra hours, took on extra projects, etc...not with the expectation of getting promoted or a raise; it just seemed like the right thing to do and was part of being a "good" employee. Then, one day, my entire department was demoted to align with business practices followed by a division in a lower cost state. I took my 30 years of experience and niche technical skills learned on the job to another company that values my input. I try to do the best job I can for my own integrity but I will no logger feel loyalty or obligation to a business I don't own beyond what is required by my job description.

You shouldn't do shit for anyone who wouldn't do the same for you. Keep in mind that most businesses aren't even profit motivated. Like the things they do aren't even done purely to try and make profit. Because profit is a gamble. You don't see these guys throwing around dumb ideas and being super optimistic. They're very grumpy, they're always trying to cut costs, place blame, they're scared man-children CLINGING to the THOUGHT of their business more than what they're actually creating or generating in wealth. They're in a groundhog day loop of misery, don't get sucked in with them. You do the bare minimum, you lie, you sass, gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss. I will never ever do anything to be a nice guy for the company again after I wanted to die working a full time job after the breakup with my fiance. Trapped in loneliness and despair yet still having this job to go too. Child rapists don't get punished that severely. And whose punishing you? YOU. Cause you keep telling yourself you gotta be a good person. By whose standards? Exes that don't care? Dumbass parents? Awful employers?

In my early 20s I was a sucker for the good old "if you just work hard enough you'll get recognized" mantra. Now I wish I'd spent that time just getting by at my entry level job and spending more energy on learning new skills + networking to eventually have more options.

Positions just been filled & theyre thinking "we've found a better hire how do we get rid of the 1 we just hired?" I knew a lady that was awful with the computer & data entry was part of the job. Not sure how they found out but they told her to trash her "handbook & welcome packet". 😁🤣Invest! Early on folks!

It all boils down to favoritism. If your manager or your managers manager doesn't like you, you're already in trouble. On the other hand if you're well liked by management, you're set. Speaking from experience I've been in both situations. Build passive income and continue to do so to the point you can walk away from the 9-5 grind. Otherwise you're a slave to the grind and traded your dreams for whatever they're paying you.

Yes and it matters not what you do, appraisals are extremely subjective even with those "KPIs". Bosses can set favourable KPIs for their pets and acknowledge whatever little accomplishments they make, whereas you can do way more and achieve much more but as long as they don't acknowledge it in appraisals it means nothing. Employee appraisals are not "objective" as they claim for sure

I'm paid well but am not happy as I just don't like my manager. Having an adversarial manager who also micromanages sucks the life out of you. But then I found out that the open position in our department had over 100 applicants and realized that that's what I'd be facing if I resigned and applied for another position. So I will stick it out as long as I can but am saving money like crazy in case things don't go well.

So glad I retired early. My name was on the "list" for raising too many issues. They made overtures after I left for me to come back and handle the tech issues that I warned about while I was there. All too often your boss can lay you off on a whim telling you there's "no work left for you to do" and/or say that they're "cutting expenses." Then roughly a month or less later they either readvertise your job or the boss hires his cousin.

I was employed at one company for over 9 and a half years. I was accused of being the bosses favorite for a while. Then, after enough people complained, the favoritism merely swung in the other direction. It was part of having coworkers in wealthy families.

Yup learned it the hard way. Was promised a promotion but end up getting passed on. Saw how easily a VP's relative got promoted, a boss's "friend" got promoted etc.. and all i got was promises. Decided to quit during the great resignation after X many years and was the best thing that i ever did. Saw how underpaid i was when they post my pos with the current market salary. But now I am happy that I made the jump - got the promotion + bump in pay. I was hesitant at first because i do like my old coworkers but it got me thinking, they don't pay my bills and that i have to do what's good for me and my future. Lesson learned. Loyalty should go both ways.

I completely agree with you. As an average employee, I have to start looking after myself. Because at the end of the day, the company is a business and it will do what it can to minimize expenses, while driving up productivity and revenue which means it will not hesitate to lay off employees if it comes down to it no matter how long you’ve been with the company.

I always knew when a boss tells you "don't discuss salary" it's a huge red flag. They make it look like they are paying you more than the next guy but that isn't the case. I learned that while I was working 60 hours a week doing everything I asked a co-worker was making $3hr more and only working on average 32 hours a week with the occasional 40 hours.

Part of this is due to the decline of unions in the private sector. Only 6 percent of private sector employees belong to unions whereas inthe 1950's it was 50 percent. I always encourage my students to consider work in the public sector.

The worst part about these realities is that as soon as someone moves 2-3 steps up on the corporate ladder, they start to act as if they themselves are the c-suite execs and shareholders. They start to eat, sleep and sh*t the corporate lingo, they become their number one cheerleaders, and they'll do anything to keep the little amount of power they are in. It's so sad and frustrating, because in most cases, they are closer to people at the "bottom" than they likely will ever be to the top. But just like HR, they have to work for or protect the company, by increasing profit and productivity and reducing liabilities, because once you start on the path of "leadership" you're now made responsible for the team you work with, even if they're not given the tools to succeed just like you said. You're right, it's all a stupid game.

Companies will continue to hire and promote individuals who are incompetent, ignorant, and inept because they are low threat and most companies are complacent. Why promote the one who works hard? "Do not badmouth." That commandment is hard for me. I've broken it many times. I can only take so much bs and frustration before it bubbles to the surface. At one job, I wrote a one-star review on Glassdoor at a company I was employed with. I even told co-workers to look at it. The company was desperate for workers, so they couldn't just kick me to the curb. When I finally gave my two-weeks notice, they asked what took me so long.

The “workplace” will see a huge shift in the years/decades to come…even more so than it already has… Mainly, BS companies/managers (big and small) will STRUGGLE MORE to find GOOD people… GOOD people will go out on their own or flee BS companies riddled with politics, cronyism and “unfairness”… Call me “visionary”….MANY things we have seen in the last 30-40 years will come to an end within the next decade… For now, it is wise to spend time and resources to gain skills that will make one INDIVIDUALLY RESILIENT for what is to come. Think INDIVIDUAL not HERD….that trend has started and is likely to continue and gain strength…

Since day one of my workplace I have been actively buying ownership into the company I work for. They are publicly traded. I know one day I won’t work there anymore either by getting fired or retirement. I choose the latter and go into early retirement. I love it when my bosses yell at me and my fellow coworkers and threatened to fire us if we don’t work faster. As a share owner I can reinstate myself as employee and continue working towards my ultimate goal.

Ps regarding unfair work culture as well as inequality. Watch the famous episode of the Simpsons (Homer enemy) featuring Frank Grimes. Grimey worked hard and made sacrifices but expected all the rewards, recognition and validation that you are supposed to get when you do something difficult whereas Homer was the complete opposite and prospered. Grimey drove himself crazy and shortened his life. A lot could be learned from that episode. Nice video. People will always get trapped in a never ending rat race if they see themselves as an employee of an organisation who wouldn't mind terminating their positions during a crisis. I believe there is no job security in the corporate world and layoffs can happen suddenly and unexpectedly as well. Hence the only way to have a peaceful life is to start a business or earn money from the markets.

everything said here is the reason I quiet quit long ago (before people even knew about quiet quiting). I wish I did it sooner to be honest. I stopped going above and beyond expectations because the reward is a lie...unless more work is a positive reward? Because I quiet quit, I have the mental and physical energy to do the things I enjoy doing...and working on a side hustle to make that my main hustle. In all honesty, sometimes making more money means dealing with more idiot managers. I dont have time or energy to deal with higher paid idiots.

My beef is work environment, leading up to the pandemic, each job I worked seemed to be more and more defensive(“do as asked” “be yourself as long as you act like we want you to”) of course since the pandemic it’s gone downhill much faster. I’ve compiled so much evidence showing I did good work but was singled out and bullied. The companies in question gave template answers and generic “per company policy” responses (most of which I referenced how company policy was violated when others acted against me). I’m finding more reason to go free agent or entrepreneur because no matter how meticulous I am, QA o whatever auditing dept is still watching me through the sniper scope, looking for my errors to “make an example” while the rest need to “learn from his mistakes”. Nobody can complain when no one works hard because their hard work makes them an unfortunate target.

If there's one thing the new generation got right it's the switch in relationship with work and the workplace, it's funny seeing all these articles that are obviously written by some corp seething with complaints about how "gen z'er don't align with the workplace" and "how to handle them" , i just laugh and scroll past them. You need to use them like they use you, and if a better opportunity arises then take it, that's how YOU make it fair.

In Chile we get 1 month salary per year worked PLUS a whole month of salary if fired/laid off on the spot. Lay offs feel great when you worked for a lot of years but this year has been terrible, 4 months already off the tracks even in cybersecurity, an industry I thought it was impossible to be unemployed on. By the way, I read "Art of War" by Sun Zu, written around 2,500 years ago. I will approach the businesses with a military general's mindset. Companies are not to help us, but use us. Don't ever look a corporation as a family.

I famously worked in an Orwellian call center lol. I had no business being there - except I was an out of work graduate, answered the questions properly at interview and I was tricked/deceived into joining this great company. I didn't realize i joined a call center until first day on the job. I struggled at first but with time and support i started to improve and get more confidence in myself. I kept to myself, didn't join a clique, didn't party with my colleagues, kept my head down and worked away. After a milestone with them an offensive note was placed at my workstation for everyone to see- i had to attend a meeting with HR and floor manager over this - i was told of the people that knew of this including the GM of the company (humiliating)- an all staff email was sent in response to this and I looked like a crybaby over this - when I returned to work, everyone avoided me and some clearly found that amusing. I lost a tonne of respect for everyone after that. I was given all the graveyard shift over the summer while everyone else was on leave (no extra pay only extra stress). I eventually got chewed up and spat out by my line manager for having a bad attitude and creating a hostile environment for my colleagues. Also minor transgressions were picked up and broadcast in front of others, whereas other colleagues oversight were overlooked, i also never got support on dealing with difficult customers (learn that on the job). I gained useful skills and experience and I now work with a better employer with great benefits and perks and have been promoted twice. In fact my first interview with them all of my answers were experiences from working at the call center. I compare the transition between the two to the ending of the Shawshank redemption lol come out clean the other end lol. Some places of work are brutal, but you can gain useful experience and use it as a stepping stone to something better, which I did. I enjoy my job and my life. Have a good day reader.

They fired me, simply because they didn’t like me. It was that plan n simple. I applied for two leadership positions, got declined. An extremely liberal company and definitely, an uphill battle. Thankfully, I didn’t quit!!

@@brendah4773 at the interview for call center. The only time an interviewer told me I was amazing and incredible lol. The same person prepared all my paperwork for HR and sold me down the river, whilst overlooking other colleagues flaws. If you go to an interview, you are the only person waiting to be interviewed, they tell you you're amazing and would be a great fit, if they go off topic during interview, if they accept answers that aren't even relevant to the post you are being interviewed for, if they make an offer very soon after the interview (even on the day of interview, in some cases right after the interview). These are signs you could be joining an "unfair" work culture - avoid like the plague lol. Have a good day reader. Ps thank you for your message.

Everything he has said it true. It's been like that at every company I have been at. Never take the job at the place that says it's a family owned business. All manager's are related to the owner. No matter how lazy they are or how bad they are at their job they will never lose their jobs. Since they know they will never get fires they often have drug and alcohol problems and it's awful working for someone with an addiction.

You forgot another important option which is to save as much money as you can to buy investments in either shares or real estate for cashflow income so you start no longer depending on a job for your livelihood and you can do whatever the hell you want after your investments cover your living costs.

I landed my first carreer promotion and having good KPIs it's also just as important to be visible to your managers or teamleads. Having good performance is part of getting promoted but not the only consideration. They chose me mot only performance alone but also because of visibility, assertiveness. Continuously communication with my manager. Sharing my thoughts how to improve the department. I've seen people pass up promotion even though they have the "best" performance they are in their own world and don't have other skills that make them stand out. I do think you bit of balls to get promoted too. Don't be passive.

Starting a business that’s profitable is much harder. Working 12+ hour days for years before you see a dime and you’re still 100% responsible for healthcare. There is no “easier” or better way unless you’re fortunate to start the right business at the right time. Being the CEO of your career is more realistic for most, IMO.

I’m pregnant and working the hardest I’ve ever had to in order to keep my job. This girl comes in saying she wants a job with the company but can’t lift 50 pounds because of her”back”. Everyone on my team made a big fuss about it saying it’s discrimination and not fair. No what’s not fair is busting your ass pregnant dealing with excruciating back pain some days and you can’t make a peep about it…yes workplaces are not fair at all! You show up, work hard(for yourself), and go home. That’s how you play the game. Mind your business and do a good job. Don’t worry about anything else.

Everything you said about the last department I worked for is true hence I am very picky when screening potential managers for future employment and realized it’s a two way street. Fortunately I don’t have this problem with my current management team but I am now more careful in how I show my capabilities and will not show my full potential to prevent being taken advantage of. I don’t want to appear like a quiet quitter but at the same time I refuse to volunteer to take the job of 2 people and get paid the same or less than 1 so I only volunteer for small favors that would not build resentment over time. My old management team was very complacent when it came to managing their workers and they thought I wasn’t leaving because I stuck it out for 5 years. I thought it was really stupid for my old supervisor to constantly ask me “if I was planning to leave.” How many people would actually honestly answer that question since most people need a job lined up before quitting their old ones. Also even if the answer was a genuine no, it might be a no for the moment but things can change from a few weeks, months or years from the question being asked but my former supervisor would feel relief after hearing a no whether if it was true or not which I thought was kind of stupid because she felt she could continue mistreatment since I told her I wasn’t going to quit at the time.

Don't fall for the overt gaslighting when you start - all the BS about ethics and raising concerns. IF you're in a workplace where such issues EXIST then that IS that workplace. Either figure out if it's something you can live with or work on moving on. Don't enter into the game of raising concerns - the channels are there to net you not deal with something. It's amazing just how far up you can go and be met with "concern" that is nothing more than the start of how to get rid of you.

At 5:37, I’m glad that you inserted a cautionary note about avoiding being your own worst enemy. Every once in a while, I’ll come across someone who’s complaining about how unfair management is, and just by having to work with them regularly, I can rattle off numerous things that they have done wrong that compromised their career more than just about anything done to them by management or coworkers. Yes, there are always examples of unfairness in corporate management, but we need the ability to honestly size up our own shortcomings too.

I had a steady job for three years, once my manager got swapped out for an angry narcissist I was like "oooh boy here we go" , all the other managers loved me except her. immediately got plenty of write ups. She would make assumptions about my personality, yell at me and try making me look dumb in front of others despite being their longer. I'm still job hopping to this day but I'm glad I have these videos to help me understand how it all happened.

A music acquaintance of mine worked at the company my husband works at for fifteen years. Last week the company laid off 30 people and that guy was one of them. My husband and I speculate the only reason why my husband wasn’t let go is because a couple weeks ago, he had forwarded some additional health info to HR as he always elects for disability when he gets hired on (he’s type 1 diabetic, had a childhood brain injury, and now just got tested for ADHD). The HR personnel have been averting their gazes from him ever since he warned them if they fired him rn he would consider it a violation of the ADA and employment law. He still has his job for now. But since we’re not sure if he’d survive a second wave of cuts, we’re just preparing to weather the storm 😮‍💨 I can’t imagine working somewhere for 15 years to get laid off bc the company mismanaged sales and their budget. What a shit show.
