Speedcubing is a competitive sport that involves solving cube puzzles as fast a possible. Waypoint visits a recent tournament that was attended by some of the fastest and most passionate speedcubers in the game.
Since the 1980’s, Speedcubing has captured the minds of mathematicians and puzzle enthusiasts. In recent years, competitive speedcubing has grown into an international craze, and the median age keeps dropping. While the world record holder is in his 20’s, most competitors are under the age of 18.

Yusheng Du just got a 3.47 to beat Feliks Zemdeg's 4.22. It's insane that an almost unknown cuber can beat a wr, just goes to show how scramble dependent the single world record really is.

It kinda sucks for world class people that had potential to beat the 4.22 for a 3.47 to happen which will be unbeatable for many years. Still, another lucky scramble will happen one day that will be used to beat the record.

I got under a minute pretty fast on the 3x3. Just watch tutorials on RU-vid and try to memorize the algorithms. Use the letters first then try to do it without looking.
@PreservationEnthusiast
@PreservationEnthusiast 5 лет назад
You should be at least under 1 minute before you go to a competition. We don't want lots of clueless beginners tying up the solving stations with 5 minute plus solves! If someone takes over 2 minutes to solve a 3x3, they should be booted out of the competition and told not come back till they have improved. They may be required to submit video evidence that their solves are of sufficient standard to be allowed to register for another comp.

A lot of the currect record holders and cubers at the top, including Feliks Zemdegs, happen to be in their early 20s. These are the same "kids" who were just starting out 8-10 years ago, and they stuck with it long enough so now they're young adults who are still very competitive.

@somfmagician 5 лет назад
@The Fake Slim Shady "Technically" according to who? There's no definition written down or agreed, but the best people on the world, the ones who go to competitions regard 1 minute as a laughable time. You need to be sub 20 in the advanced category or 20 to 30 in the intermediate speed cuber bracket. Anything over 30 seconds is beginner territory.

@somfmagician
@somfmagician 5 лет назад
@@duckduck4923 That's not "technically" it's just Dana's opinion. She's somewhat of an ambassador, so she's biased to make comments to encourage novices. Go to a competition and most people regard a solve average of anything over about 30 seconds as pretty embarrassing and not really speed cubing. They might not admit it, just to be kind to beginners, but that's what they think deep down. If you go to a comp there's only ever a handful of novices over 30 seconds.
