Hansa Studios started in the early '60s as a small recording space in the headquarters of Hansa Music Production. The Hansa Records label was founded in 1962, a year after construction of the Berlin Wall, by brothers Peter and Thomas Meisel.

A lots of audio- and measering engineers lost their jobs due to digital music production. Even the SAE Institute suffers. Thats the way it goes. Large consoles impress more than a workstation. But I never would go back to analog technique. It is to inefficient.

Here in South Africa, people say that all the time as well. Guess it’s because of the Dutch influence of something, but absolutely integrated in the language. Cheers.

I am old enough to be have experienced music's golden age in the late 60's through the 90's. All those great albums produced in world class studios with amazing gear. I am sad to see all those great studios going away. Sound City, Caribou Ranch, Grand Master, Wally Heiders, Hansa, and so many more. Either gone or a shadow of what they once were. Hopefully somebody is saving the gear, it will be appreciated and wanted in future years.

TheRealCritique also the sort of natural selection that used to happen in music is greatly diminished now too. I think it’s great that more people can make music now generally, but it does mean there is an awful lot more crap to wade through.

"So clean"... In my opinion (and I hear this from many other germans too), Berlin is one of the dirtiest towns in Germany. Nonetheless worth a visit everytime you're nearby. It has an incomparable charm! Nice video till minute 8 and looking forward to the next 50 minutes. Thank you for your videos!

Great episode, Warren! It was awesome to see Alex's enthusiasm and genuine love for the place. Of course he knew all the gears and rooms, but the chandelier bit cracked me up a bit. "Oh, the middle one is original, the others were put in later". Truly shows, he actually knows every nook and cranny of the place. Warren, I've been tempted to suggest this many times and haven't, but I have to after seeing this... Please interview Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Erasure etc.), he worked at Hansa a lot with these kinds of bands in the 80's (and still I believe). Super guy and so interesting. I think he'd bring something different to the content table, with his sampling knowledge. Really enjoyed this studio tour, thanks.

Unfortunately I understand from others that he's reluctant to do any more interviews, at least with regards to Depeche Mode. Apparently he feels that he has said everything he has to say in previous interviews. I can't say whether this is only in relation to Depeche Mode or a more general statement.

Can u still record in “Studio 2” because I have a very small band we haven’t put out any material yet but if we get big I would like to record in Studio 2 one day because U2 is my favourite Band and Achtung Baby is a masterpiece and I want too feel the Achtung Baby 90’s vibe lol

Warren, as much as you tried to play off asking to buy or be given a piece of gear, there was no hiding that you were willing to drop down on your knees and beg. If that was what it took to get a "yes you can have it" or "well sell it too you". $50, just leave it in the basement. "Marillion" - yes, they recorded their hugely successful Misplaced Childhood there ( at that time the Neve wasn't functioning properly anymore b.t.w. because the Killing Joke had damaged it a few months earlier with the help of dry powder from a fire extinguisher)

@@lesterpaul9657 Well, that was the album (also produced by Chris Kimsey b.t.w.) Love Like Blood was on - that's basically everything I know from them, but I love that song - crappy behaviour either way though, I agree. But at least they didn't crash cars in street races while they were there.

The 'Berlin trilogy' is a misnomer. The Heroes album was recorded in Hansa but the other two used different studios. I think Low was recorded in France.

Indeed, Bowie lived in Berlin during the making of those three albums with only Heroes being fully recorded there.

Obviously Bowie recorded Iggy Pop there during that period. So it’s more than just those three albums that were directly affected by Bowie’s experience of living in Berlin

Herbert von Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonics recorded all 9 Beethoven symphonies there. Still the best recordings ever not only in my opinion.

Very cool, I hope they get that amazing room back up and running and make the hits of the next hundred years in there. There is so much undercovered talent these days and they need to get recorded on that fantastic gear by pros the old school way with that great gear. The world is begging for genuine music played with real instruments by actual musicians again, it’s been too long since we got anything truly good. Thanks for showing us the place.

@@Producelikeapro Really? I' m German as well and I' m sorry I couldn' t record at Rockfield Studios in Wales or at Abbey Road. These are studios with real rock history. Great german studio was Dieter Dircks studio in Stommeln because he as an engineer and his studio work was different.

Fascinating videoI Expert (and seemingly an all-round super-nice guy!) Alex, obviously really cherishes and respects the amazing legacy of Hansa Studios, and works his ass off to maintain its integrity. It would be an amazing experience to have a flat upstairs for a week and work there. I'd never sleep, lol! I thought 'Lodger' was made in Montreux, Switzerland; and the Record Plant in New York City, though. Brilliant stuff!!! Thanks Warren! :)

Hansa was where much of Sylvian's 'Brilliant Trees' was recorded in 1983. There's some footage online of Holger Czukay (RIP), Steve Jansen, Wayne Braithwaite (RIP) and Ryuichi Sakamoto recording their contributions.

Yeah Some Great Reward and Black Celebration by Depeche Mode as well. Black Celebration which was an important exploration of extremely high-quality and artistic sound design with samples, synthesis, and physical spaces/re-amping. Gareth Jones and Dan Miller, would be amazing to hear from Gareth Jones. Anyhow. Lots of innovative albums made at Hansa over the years.

Interestingly, Hansa has lost its clients in '90s while in the same time German record label BMG and its child Jive ruled the world charts with BSB, N'Sync, Britney and a ton of other acts. Incidentally they mostly recorded in the small Cheiron studio in Stockholm. That's when production teams started to be more important than studios, and this trend is still valid. SSL would do good move to introduce a hi-quality analog console in the range of 25-50K USD,

yeah, 4 channel midfield speaker with 35Hz on the woofers! If I play the B1 on the Bass (30Hz) they will not cover it! Completely useless. If I go for midfield 4 channel, why do I have to invest in a subwoofer too? Why not getting speakers with 30Hz for that price? Jack of all trades.

I like these Studio Tour in Berlin, mr. Warren i like also the outboard gear, very famous Hansa Studio in 80'. i like Britisch, and Nashvile and NYC Where making the Software Toontrack drum Studios. Thanks again.

Many a great one recorded there including some by Killing Joke and Marillion.. think Nick Cave as well. Strangely enough so-called famous Krautrock artists never recorded there... such as Kraftwerk Can Konny Plank etc

If I ever won hundreds of millions of dollars from the lottery, I would love to build a studio, hire people to maintain the equipment and people to be instructors, and open up the studio to nothing but kids wanting to learn to mix/master/produce music and kids looking to record their first album. And just have them all learn together for free! Obviously I'd have to reach out to a lot of companies for support or I'd run out of money quick, but still... it would be so awesome!

I remember in the 70's when Boney M were dominating the charts and Donna Summer and Georgio Moroder were in the ascendant, that Hansa were advertising for acts on street advertising billboards in Birmingham, this links in with the manager saying that the owners were more publishers than anything else, more of a X Factor than Opportunity Knocks - being a spotty tennaged Sabbath fan at the time I noticed it and the import that it had, but Boney M????

Times are really changed since music came sampled out of little boxes. I was still recording in the old „Esplanade“ studio across the Hansa Studios at Potsdamer Platz. Da gab es Otto Redlin noch „unterm Dach“.

I’ve been in some great studios around the world, but this was truly exceptional. An unbelievably inspiring space, many of them in fact. The very walls speak a history of music. Thanks for the tour, Warren.

Great video, thanks for sharing it! I had a (tourist) tour at Hansa last week from Thilo and that was like being on holy ground. Studio 1 was not available at the time but we got to enjoy being in the Meistersaal (Studio 2) and that was very enjoyable.

Sorry to say that but Studio 2 was what made Hansa so special. Nowadays Hansa is a recording studio like a 100 studios too. Okay but nothing special. Hope they could get it back.

As I have read on the Hansa Studio website they are charging 550 Euros per song for mixing. That´s madness way over the top. And then .. will it be a good mix is the second question.

II think music is going back wher it from I mean people ar havin the feelin of big room studios,rather than home studio like in th 80S 90S also the CDS dont have that succes too so people prefers the vinyls disc think is more lively. all of that

Except for the outro there is not a single note of music played in this "sound on sound" video. You spent hours at Hansa without listening to any sounds that were produced there. Boo.
