I dream for clean fusion energy, global access to the internet, routine missions to Mars, Europa and beyond.

this made me cry, because today I can't help but think about the worst scenarios as a more realistic possibility with the trends that we see now. I hope we can all come together for a better tomorrow. a virtual hug to all.

Any point beyond 2030 is almost unimaginable. The pace of technological growth is so fast by that time that we wouldn't be able to comprehend it. A typical computer of 2050 would the storage capacity of hundreds of yottabytes, have gigapixles of resolution, and would work at zeptoseconds of speed.

the future is probably a combination of things.

2 and 3 and SOME of 5 would be perfect. I really hope we can do it, guys. We are the ones who need to step forth and create this future. We can do it.

Scenarios 2 and 3 could go hand in hand with one another and they together look like the best outcomes. Scenario 5 Looks OK, nothing all that special, but a "good enough" future. Scenario 1 doesn't look very good at all, but as of today, that seems like the most likely of the scenarios. As a staunch liberal-libertarian, Scenario 4 scares me, easily the worst, but a big enough crisis(i.e. War, Stock market crash, Peak oil) could cause that.

Scenario 2 is obviously the best resolution for the planet and human beings alike. we seclude ourselves and allow the planet to continue being green and healthy

You forgot the scenario where autonomous machines take over work. I bet we'll have helper robots and completely autonomous supply chains by 2050 eliminating the need of human intervention in all aspects but design. There would be an economical collapse before money is ultimately rendered useless and we become completely dependent on robots to do everything for us, including building new and better robots. Eventually we'll find a way to merge with them, leaving behind our human weaknesses to become a species of cyborgs. If within this time frame they discover a way to travel fast through space, we may not even live on earth by the next millennium.

don't be negative. There are a lot of changes in humanity. We are more conscious of our problems and let's hope selfishness is weakened.

Option 6: Humanity wipes itself out by then.

The first city, with all the darkness and busyness and noise and dirt. Thats New york or tokyo in the future. These cities base their creation off of these large dark metropolises. Just because its the future, doesn't mean the large dark metropolis is going to suddenly stop being a large dark metropolis. The second area where things were more vivid, and colorful and green. Those areas will exist as well as the large dark metropolises. The same with our current cities. Toward the middle you have large dark concret light jungles. And on the outside you have the burbs. Suburbia, filled with malls, branding, color, clean sidewalks, green parks, and an overall sense of "THIS AREA IS HIGH QUALITY LIVING" these areas will be more accepting of vertical farming, and do it yourself attitudes, and produce your own 3d prints this and that. You can see this comparison already in our current cities. The 3rd city mentioned here, is a possibility, but only in the circumstance of a war.

Scenario 4 will happen if Donald trump is elected

Humanity has two things, and only two things, going for it. The first is our rate of progress, which is exponential(although our problems are also likewise exponential....). The second is that, as a species, as a society, and as a people, we are more likely to cooperate than to fight. Not by much, mind you, but by a little, and that may be all we need.

Deutsche Post DHL needs profits to exist just like any other business.These businesses will promote consumption via their marketing machines in spite of the environmental impact. Many years of research have gone into marketing and the psychology of pursuading people into purchasing needless products. It will be no surprise when corporations refuse to accept any responsibility.

combination of all perhaps. i'll be 54 :( dang, all of us will be old lol. But then again nanobots that will make us healthier, age slower, live longer, etc.. will be available to the public in about 10 years. and then if that makes us live to like 110 on average, then we can use whatever advancements they will have in 2110s, lol. such as the more advanced modified nanobots, age pills etc.. :) so being 50 will be probably be like being 30 today. (and we won't have to worry about getting hit by a car because within a few years there will be self driving cars) unless there is a malfunction or something, lol :). overpopulation won't be an issue due to mars colonies. this will happen (only if we can amend the corrupt government).

I think the world will be different, just not in a way we can imagine. The world is a lot different than 1980 today.

It is incredibly amazing, also amazingly terrifying! Computers only give what we already know, but when we reach the level where AI becomes more intelligent than the smartest people on Earth, who knows what will happen, be it good or bad. It is an odd thought though, as phones are technically computers, imagine walking down the street one day, phone vibrates, answer, and your phone tells you how it figured out how to use rain as jet fuel. We're going into an amazing, yet undetermined era!

While I do base much of the theory on the exponential growth in power of computers and cheapness of transistors, exponential growth in biomedicine, nanotechnology, 3d printing etc. I do agree they may be off with their predictions by about 30 years - transferral of consciousness may not be around until the late 21st century. However, I do think that human augmentation such as mechanical and nano augmentation will definitely be around in the next 30 years. The last 10 years we have gained so much

I think its a combination between 2 and 3. because automated robotics will take over all the labor jobs, so humans end up designing new goods. On that note, the total society system has to change as well as the monetary system..

What would be best for the world? A combination of Scenarios 2 and 3, assuming all cooperation is willful, and 100% of social classes have been abolished. What is most likely to happen? A combination of Scenarios 1 and 4. Which scenarios are actually possible? All of them.

I have a feeling that this will end up being another 2001: A Space Odyssey. Great dream, but the reality will be some growth, but not like what we dream of. And nationalism isn't all that bad, in fact our greatest leap in technology happened during WWII, not only are nuclear weapons still the most powerful, and thanks to their creation we have space travel. Most of our technology has been just MAXIMIZING what was invented during the WWII and the Cold War era. Competition is the key.

This generation and the next will be a very interesting period in human history, technology will play a major part even more than now. Perhaps we will create marvels that will open the gateways for exploration of the stars even further.

There was a show on the science channel that was called 2020 in 2006... Said the same stuff. We have eight years to complete 500 years of achievements...

Combine all those proposed scenarios and severely lower the "futuristic" look everything has and you'll have whats actually going to happen. As surprising as all the changes will be, the biggest surprise is how little things as a whole will have actually changed.

Actually the USA was established after they seceded from the UK. Many countries were involved in the slave trade. With the UK ending slavery quite early on compared to the USA. Parts of Africa were part of the British Empire, and thus parts of the British Navy were making sure African people weren't sold in to slavery.

With the world having lost 45% of it's total wealth or more recently, I'm betting that we won't have capitalism in 2050, but rather some sort of more sustainable economic system. Due to the economic crisis, I think the lesson is people just can't be trusted with money. I have no idea what that system might be, but guaranteed, capitalism in it's present form will not exist in 2050.

it seems to me that those who worry can not do anything I mean robust measures are beyond the abilities of the ordinary people. can we stop technological innovations? no of course and even we dont want to, on the contrary, we like it we want more perspectives. And what we can do against global warming? viruses/ nuclear weapons? and so on .... Any answer to the worrying questions is still more worrying.

I'll be 51 in 2050. Boy am I glad I was born in 1999 because the kids in 2050 are most likely going to rely on technology for everything. Same with adults.

Most paper comes from sustainable forrests and can be easily recycled. Tablets consume electricity, are fragile and full of harmful substances that are hard to recycle.
