The World's Best Vodka vs. My Top 10 Under $40

Lol, let me first apologize for my spoiled dog that can be heard a few times in the background. He could hear me through the door and was just letting me know that I was running late with the treats.
Okay, now onto the task at hand. So, I wanted to find out how much separation there was between what is regarded as “The World’s Best Vodka” - the $200 Kauffman Private Collection Luxury Vodka and some of my favorite low end and mid-range priced vodkas. To do this, I selected 5 of my favorite “Under $20” and 5 more “Under $40” vodkas to be tasted side-by-side with a bottle of the rare Kauffman Private Collection. What makes the Kauffman PC so good (and the reason it’s so hard to find) is that it’s only created in years when the crops/grains are of exceptional quality. Unfortunately, this apparently hasn’t happened much since 2009, so finding a bottle can be a real challenge. The contenders for this were split into two sides. In the “Under $20” we have the $17 Reyka from Iceland, $11 Exclusiv 1 from Moldova, $11 Sobieski from Poland, $17 Stolichnaya from Russia, $17 Tito’s from Indiana/Austin, and the $11 Monopolowa from Austria was an alternate. In the “Under $40” we have $27 Grey Goose from France, $30 Beluga “Transatlantic Racing Edition” from Russia, $40 Belvedere “Intense Unfiltered 80” Diamond Rye from Poland, $40 Chase from England, $35 Imperia from Russia, and the $30 Moscow Gold “Black Edition” from Russia was my alternate there.
In the end I hope we all have a better understanding of what the different price levels of vodka have to offer and how some educated purchases can help bridge the price gaps. I'd also like to note that while there's some amazing values in the less expensive vodka brands, you're also more likely to run into batch variance (quality) issues in the "Under $20" category than in the mid-range "Under $40." So, keep that in mind when making your purchases. As mentioned in the video, here’s the link to my “LiquorHound's Best Spirits of 2019” • LiquorHound's Best Spi...

Polish vodka is best for me, Zubrowka. I also buy it for my Father, he likes it very much. It has a hint/spice of the bison grass. Always have a bottle at home. Stoli is incredibly unique with it’s pepper notes, very reminiscent of rye. Russian standard is one of my favorites for its smoothness and creamy finish. Sobieski for the price is incredibly clean, with almost no alcohol burn. Surprisingly i find very little pepper notes in Sobieski despite them advertising that it is distilled from rye.

No tax on exports in Eastern Europe and no tax on imports in America. Virtually no liquor tax is most states and (don't quote me) likely none on the federal level. They take their freedom seriously, sometimes to a fault, but I wouldn't mind giving up free Healthcare and other social services for cheap booze even if only for a week. The viscosity of a fluid is a measure of its resistance to deformation at a given rate. For liquids, it corresponds to the informal concept of "thickness": for example, syrup has a higher viscosity than water. -Had to google that :D

I'm mostly a party-drinker when it comes to vodka and generally distinguish two types of that beverage - the one that makes you feel like you've swallowed a burning coal (ugh, Bols vodka anyone?) and the one that does not (Finlandia upwards). Although I gotta say some premium vodkas like Chopin can be appreciated by even a drink simpleton like me. I do love watching your stuff however, it is maddeningly entertaining to listen to you describe all the nuances of vodka while keeping it simple enough so that even a non-native like me can understand it. there are a number of inexpensive vodkas that drink as well as the supposed top shelf picks. (1)Friis vodka usually $10.00 to 15.00 per bottle (2)vesica vodka $22.00 per 1.75 liter. excellent and very smooth.(3) Blue Ice vodka in original blue bottles ( very very smooth ) (4) stoli gold not always available but one of the first triple distilled. still a great drink. (5) Wheatley vodka from buffalo trace. distilled 9 times $22.00 per bottle. (6) Platinum vodka distilled 7 times around $20.00 or so for a 1.75 liter bottle. All of these vodkas drink extremely well without breaking a budget. i drink all of these with store bought ice . Let sit in glass for 30 seconds and enjoy each and every one of these. these are vodkas that this expert drinks regularly. i know my vodka.

Tito's is distilled from corn. I don't think any of the others are. There aren't many corn vodkas out there, and I've noticed that I can usually pick up some sweeter notes from the corn vodkas. Also, Tito's uses water from the aquifers here in Austin which are filtered through limestone. That limestone imparts a distinctive flavor to the water. It actually gives it a bit of a citrusy flavor which tends to come through in vodkas that use limestone filtered water. Tito's if my favorite room temperature sipping vodka. I'm not put off by medicinal or "yeasty" notes. I actually like them. I'm into single malt Scotches from Islay, so I guess I'm desensitized to the smell of band aids, iodine, and hospital halls in my drinks. ;-)

Interesting picks, like your review, thank you. Interesting that you picked Monopolowa over Luksusowa, both potato distilled, but to my taste buds Luksusowa beats the other hands down especially, for mixed drinks. Surprised the Chopin didn’t make the cut to the other tier.

Vodka now days is not distilled. Whiskey is. Vodka (spirit) is made by mass production via rectification process. Vodka is not a moonshine.

Good video. My go-to sipping vodka has been Stoli for decades, and glad you had a mention of my favorite vodka for martinis - Monopolowa, which many, many bars and restaurants place in the well-level. A slightly dirty Monopolowa martini and oysters after work is a great way to turn a bad day around. I am surprised to not see my least favorite vodka on your sample table - Ketel One. I can't do the heavy charcoal filtered taste.

I'd have to grab some Tito's and try it while trying to taste what you're able to pick up... it's been my go to for a while, but I've never noticed those notes. I'm not much of a taste tester either, which may very well be the main thing... but i agree with Monopolova being on the list and Grey Goose being off, both of which have me taking a second guess at Tito's.

My favorite Vodka's are Belvedere and Grey Goose. I think that they shine when you want to make some really fancy cocktails with high quality ingredients. Cheap vodka punches thru and gives everything that weird aftertaste and harshness, whereas Belvedere and Goose add a smooth texture and all you can really taste is the alcohol without the windex and ovencleaner notes. I personally really love vodka lemonade; I think lemons compliment the natural taste of vodka so well. You basically just add lemon juice, a bit of simple syrup and lemon shavings then shake it on ice with added lemon twist at the end. It's actually delicious and a little bit like drinking a lemon drop. As far as my favorite liquors go, I'd have to say Brandy and Tequila are my personal favorites. Don't really like whiskey. Don't really drink vodka on it's own either, I think it shines in cocktails.

This was interesting! I have tasted about half of the vodkas here (Beluga Gold Line is my favourite, but Noble is the one I use for drinks and stuff). I found the Tito's to be actually sweeter than the others - it is made out of corn and I could bet It was there. Stoli is one of the vodkas you can use for almost everything. I think I need to buy Imperia - haven't had that for many many years (Imperia is btw made by Russki Standard, quite well known brand also).

I wish somebody would just run a wide variety of vodkas on a gas chromatograph and settle the agrument once and for all. For most the quality of a vodka is majorly influenced by the amount of unwanted organic in the vodka. A GC can determine the concentration of things like aldehydes and non ethyl alcohols present in a vodka down to parts per million. I'm sure all of the large vodka distillers are testing there own vodka straight from the column before secondary processing and before water is added.
@LiquorHound
@LiquorHound 4 года назад
Well most know that water, yeast, fermentation, still design and distillation technique all make a good amount of difference from one vodka to the next, and a GC could pick out all the things you mentioned in your comment. But I believe it’s what’s added post distillation that also makes a fair amount of difference. EU regulated vodkas can be made using “traditional” methods/recipes which may include small amounts of natural sweeteners like maple syrup or herbs/extracts like ginseng, fig and malt without being labeled as a “flavored vodka.” This explains why many of them are revered as the best tasting. In addition to those additives, both EU and US vodkas can add trace amounts of sugar, glycerin and citric acid (the US limits it to 1000pm or .02%) to help round off the edges of the distillate. So in the end, it may be a combination of multiple factors that makes some better than others, and of course we can’t forget that everyone’s tastes are different. Cheers!

Appreciate your reviews. IMO it’s not specifically the taste but rather the vodkas that are poor quality in terms you will get a bad headache or stomachache. My favs are Froggy B, Idol, Nemiroff, Stoli, Beluga, Russian Standard, Gallant, Reyka, Opulent, Chopin and ZYR just to name a few. My absolute least favs are Smirnoff, Svedka, Skyy, Ketel One, Grey Goose, Absolut, New Amsterdam, Summum, Pinnacle, Crystal Head and many many more. Lol.

Is a vodka cocktail with tomato juice intoxicating? Or is it neutralized (due to tomato juice)? Do you suggest with tomato juice or beer without alcohol?
@LiquorHound
@LiquorHound Год назад
I think alcohol is alcohol. The only neutralizer is your body. So monitor your intake and drink high quality spirits to avoid the headaches associated with added sugars and poorly distilled spirits. Cheers!
