I think that what this movie shows very well is that motorsports athletes are truly that, athletes. While reflexes, coordination, and decision making are key skills, there is a whole other aspect to the physical forces and conditions that the driver/pilot must overcome to even turn a fast practice lap. No doubt with the proper training and preparation Gregger and all of the sim to track racers will be successful, but in order to take that next step they need to become conditioned athletes to go along with their car control skills.

AMRosa10 it’s a sport. Regardless of the sport every professional from racing to gymnastics have a natural ability. There is no comparison. I don’t care for the argument that it’s a sport or not a sport. The fact is the 99.9% of people cannot keep up with a Tour de France cyclist or drive a car around SPA with 20 other drivers and keep consistent lap times and not fly into a wall. Most folks do not respect that which is foreign to them. For instance I always thought gold was a stupid sport until I tried it . I quickly developed a new found respect for what they do. What’s the difference between sport and game? Sportsman play a game. A sportsman is Driving a car trying to win the game which is a race. Stupid argument that I used to make which makes no sense now that I’ve broadened my mind. Oh how i wish others would do that as well...

After having done a few driver trainings and track days myself after ten years of sim racing experience I can tell that it really helps in understanding vehicle dynamics, racing line and how to control a car over the limit as well as with hand-feet-eye coordination. Of course it can't take away everything from real world driving, but it helps to connected the sensations to known pattern, its a joy. It takes so much of the learning curve on real competitive driving and learning the track away it phenomenal. For being out only those two days in those nimble race cars Gregger did awesome IMHO! I wouldn't have been able to do that quick on my first training. Thats talent! :-)
@LuizSPK

+Max Seidenstücker Indeed. And what's to be remembered is: he's far from the fitness of a regular racing driver. Greger isn't way over the weight, but he still not being an athlete. And to keep the focus dealing with the physical wear, it's a pretty good job.
@Bracci0
@Bracci0 9 лет назад
+Max Seidenstücker yeah it helps a lot, really. I have a friend who does simracing for like 7 years, and now he can take part in a kinda strong central-european suzuki swift championship, and he's damn good, podiums and stuff, even there are internationally experienced (WTCC 1 race, ETCC, TCR) drivers in the field yeah he is talented, but he woudln't be anywhere without simulators, because he lernt all the stuff there this century could be the century of the aliens on track

Fear is the biggest change and the actual physical senses being battered by real driving. They talk about "seat of the pants feeling" which is jsut something you never get with sim racing, you think so much of your driving in a sim environment and in real racing you feel it.

Sounds familiar! I had a similar experience. Nothing fancy, not even a league, just a plain old pickup race on VROC sometime in the early 2000s. I think it might have been Spa, but I'm not 100% certain; I could be blurring memories together. I remember I was in a Brabham, which I really liked driving at Spa and got down to the low 3:19s -- I was only ever faster in the Eagle. Not exactly WR material even back then, but competitive enough that I won races from time to time. Suffice to say Mr Huttu was faster. Okay, he was (I think) in a Lotus, but that wasn't the reason; he was just faster. A lot faster. A lot lot faster. Than everyone. He won the race by a street, unsurprisingly. Even back then he was a superstar of sim racing, so I think some of us were a little starstruck that he'd just wander into a pickup race with a bunch of random people and have fun racing. :)

Been Iracing for 4+ years now and (sim) racing is an awesome hobby while some may talk about the cost its really cheap in my opinion with all the promotions they have and the fact that they pay you to race it cost me little per year ... You don't need to buy all the car's and tracks , I mostly oval race so really don't buy much on the road racing side... Iracing all so pays you to race up to $10. every quarter so if you race there is half the yearly membership right there and wait for member promotions you can really save... anyway great hobby love it !

@s2kirl perhaps, but he's a Finn. the weird but very Finnish thing with us is that its important to know what others think of us. considering he had a job to do, i reckon he saw the whole thing precisely like that; as a job he needed to master instead of going "oh wow" out loud. we do appreciate everything, we are just a bit weird about it.

If they only kept the NASCAR license think of how good nascar games could be.

Very cool. I suspect he simply got some motion sickness. Like riding a roller coaster for the first time. That feeling in your belly. He just needs to get acclimated to the g-forces and movement. In shape and confident, I think he could be magical behind the wheel. If he was hungry enough to make the transition. Well done video
