Backpacking in the Cordillera Huayhuash of Peru is a dream. It's one of the best destinations on the planet. I take you with me on the trek of a lifetime and offer some pointers on how to go yourself.

Isn't that winter in the southern hemisphere tho? What was the weather like?

Weather was excellent most days. I think the best months for hiking in the Andes are from May-Septemper.

Yeah, it is considered one of the best alpine hikes in the world for a reason. I would also include doing the Alpamayo circuit a must too, especially because you will already be in Huaraz most likely.

This is place where u guys camp was day 10 of my 11 days independent huayhuash trek… classic huayhuash circuit is usually 8-12 days… with beautiful camp sites , lakes and several mt passes and viewpoints.. so i suggest doing the huayhuash circuit trek rather than a section of it if u get enough travel days…if u are not prone to altitude sickness and have the mental/physical endurance to carry 10-12 days of food then i highly suggest to do it solo… im 5”2 non athletic built living on sea level and dont do any gym rather just under 2 months of 1-2 hours of running 2x a week did the trick for me to somehow prepare for the 11 days trek…

I'm acclimatizing for my bikepacking trip down the spine of the Peruvian Andes currently in Huaraz... should I do this trek too?? Seems legendary... I'm too po to do any kind of guide porter whatever and don't want to gringo it anyway... I guess I just need to acquire a bag to hold all my gear and food that is not panniers. The altitude merks me

I did this trek solo without much logistics. Took a 80 sole or around $20 ride from Huaraz. A little trickier getting back to Huaraz, but definitely pretty easy. I also don't speak too much spanish.

I know 2 people who died from altitude sickness and another who had to get evaced by helicopter off the side of a mountain. It certainly is no joke.
